Long-time lawman Hans Miller has been chosen as this year’s top cop by the local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Miller said it was an honor to be tapped as the 2011 Peace Officer of the Year. He said the award mean that much more coming from an organization like VFW Post 9133, which is made up of battle-tested heroes.

VFW post commander Rigo Dalimonte said Miller was chosen because of his outstanding commitment to a lifetime of service in law enforcement.

Miller’s career spans four decades and includes positions with federal, state and local law enforcement.

He began his law enforcement calling as a military police officer in the Marine Corps, which he joined in 1971. Miller rose to the enlisted rank of gunnery sergeant before becoming an officer.

He retired as a major at Camp Lejeune in 1996 and went to work for the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation in 1997. As an SBI agent, Miller was a sworn special deputy to the U.S. marshal and served as an agent with the FBI’s Cybercrime Task Force. Miller retired from the SBI in 2009 and went to work at the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office as a CSI supervisor. He remains a reserve deputy.
