A National Guard captain from St. Augustine and a tech sergeant from Starke were killed Sunday night when they stopped to help a motorist on Interstate 10 in Jefferson County and were hit by another car, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Capt. Tecarie M. Czarnecki, whose age was unavailable, and Tech Sgt. David A. Stone, 30, were in a military convoy headed west on the interstate just after 7 p.m., according to the Highway Patrol.

They all pulled over when one of the convoy’s vehicles, headed from Camp Blanding to Quincy, had a tire blow out, said Lt. Col. James Evans, a National Guard spokesman.
