"Victor went to Afghanistan served honorably, came home with honor," said Ismael Quiroz, Anaya's cousin and also retired from the Marine Corps. "The nature of his death was just a tragic loss not only for his family but for the Marine Corps and the community as well."
EARLIMART, Calif.---There were many hugs among friends and condolences for the family of 23 year-old Victor Anaya at a viewing held at the gym at Earlimart Middle School. And there were many who rose to pay tribute to a man who many remember for his smile.

"This is one of the hardest days of my life," said Javier Leyva. "We all know that there's a hole in our hearts."

The popular Anaya was killed August 15 when shots were fired at a party on the 10000 block of Rancho Cordova Street in Bakersfield. His cousin David Anaya was also wounded but has since been released from the hospital.
