ROANOKE, Va.—
The Hicklin family was at Roanoke Regional Airport staring out the window, waiting and watching for his plane to land.

Once he arrived, the entire airport cheered, as he made his way to hug his family for the first time in over a year.

Saturday was a big day for the Hicklin’s. Their soldier serving in the United States Army finished his tour in Iraq.

His mother, Betty Barber, explains how she’s been staying in touch. “When he wasn’t out on a mission, we got to talk a whole lot through Skype on the computer, through Facebook and by phone,” said Barber.

Gulf War Hero Arrested by VA Cops for Helping Fellow Veteran

Gulf War Hero Arrested by VA Cops for Helping Fellow Veteran, Now is Criminally Harassed

Gulf War hero arrested by VA cops for helping fellow veteran, now is criminally harassed.
(ROANOKE, Va.) - I embarrassed the Roanoke Virginia VARO back in April of this year, and they have been gunning for me every since. Here is the Fox News story.

I went in to the Roanoke VARO on Tuesday the 17th of August 2010 and a veteran asked me for advice as he heard me talking to my friend about his VA problems. I assisted the veteran in filing a 4138 requesting a copy of his entire C&P file from the VARO. Within minutes I was arrested by 3 armed federal protective service guards and 2 level 8 VA managers. The charge was solicitation.

I would appreciate the opportunity to get this into the media. If veterans are not free to speak to each other about their VA claims while on VA property, do we really have freedom of speech?

Report claims Roanoke Veterans Affairs office mismanaged disability claims

Report claims Roanoke Veterans Affairs office mismanaged disability claims

A federal Office of Inspector General report claims employees with Roanoke’s regional office of veteran’s affairs mismanaged several disability claims.

Between August 25th to September 2nd of last year, the report reads several inspectors were at the office inside Roanoke’s Poff federal building.

The inspectors looked at everything from the contents of some employees’ desks to what was in their trash cans.

The report found the office did not meet 6 of 14 important operational areas.

It also found employees mismanaged the claims of several vets.

Inspectors looked at a sample of claims filed between January and March of 2009.

Of the 901 disability claims filed during that time frame, the sample studied 118 of them.

Inspectors found 29 of those 118 claims contained errors.

Police: Girl, 6, tied up, punished for taking food by relatives

Police: Girl, 6, tied up, punished for taking food
Girl was allegedly restrained in a bedroom for as long as a week

ROANOKE, Va. - Relatives of a 6-year-old girl in southwestern Virginia are accused of punishing her for taking food from the kitchen by repeatedly tying her up in a bedroom, surrounded by rubber snakes and spiders to scare her, police said Tuesday.

The girl's grandmother, aunt and uncle were in the Bristol, Va., jail on charges related to child abuse.

Bristol Police Sgt. Steve Crawford said there was evidence the girl was restrained in an apartment bedroom various times through July, including one week straight. He said police have reason to believe the practice had gone on longer than that.

Vietnam veteran, Randy Vest, compares life to combat.
“It’s just like combat itself, you don’t quit in the middle of it. You just keep going,” Vest said.
With Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, he knows first hand sometimes that’s easier said than done.

“It doesn’t take a whole lot to cause you to have flashbacks, nightmares, things like that at night,” he said.

It took Randy more than 30 years to finally face his problems. He says once he left the combat zone he was back at home within a couple of days. Unfortunately, there were so many negative feelings, as well as stereotypes toward the Vietnam War, he didn’t want to talk about it until the War in Iraq.

That’s when Randy finally admitted he had a problem. With the help of a good friend, David Amos, he went through the long process of applying for compensation from the U.S. Government.
