Fort Campbell Did Not Search For AWOL Suspected Rapist?

Suspected rapist goes AWOL, but Army doesn't search for him

Had anyone looked, Hazelbower may not have been hard to find. After fleeing Fort Campbell, he had gone home to Lanark, Ill., a small town two hours west of Chicago. Lanark Police Chief Matt Magill and other local law enforcement officials said they were never asked to search for him.
WASHINGTON — Army Pvt. Jameson T. Hazelbower went AWOL after learning he was suspected of raping a 15-year-old girl. Despite the potential threat to the public that he posed, the self-described sex addict roamed free for nearly three months before local police collared him in Winnebago, Ill., near where he grew up.

And that was only by chance, according to interviews, police reports and court-martial records obtained by The Associated Press.

An officer responded to a call late on a Friday night in March 2014 about a suspicious vehicle parked in a cul-de-sac outside an apartment complex. Hazelbower, his pants down to his knees, was in the car with a girl, barely 14. She was unharmed.

Hazelbower's case is a window into an obscure but significant aspect of the U.S. military's legal system. Deserters suspected of serious crimes are to be prioritized for capture based on the severity of the offenses. But the Army never searched for Hazelbower and the U.S. Marshals Service was not called in, even though marshals have arrested more than 200 deserters over the past five years alone.

In fact, there was a lack of urgency to locate Hazelbower despite strident warnings from his superiors at Fort Campbell, Ky., records show. The military's version of an arrest warrant described him as a "sexually violent predator" and a known drug abuser. Also, he had gone AWOL before. "CAUTION - ESCAPE RISK" is stamped in bold letters on the right side of the document. read more here

Military criminal investigators raided Marine Corps defense counsel offices

Marine Corps to review raid on law offices

Lawyers in the offices are handling cases for offenses ranging from an unauthorized absence to murder. One of the most prominent cases handled by defense lawyers at Camp Pendleton is that of Lawrence Hutchins III, a Marine sergeant who is being retried in an Iraq war crimes case on charges that include murder and obstruction of justice.

SAN DIEGO — Military criminal investigators raided Marine Corps defense counsel offices at Camp Pendleton, opening files during a 2½-hour search and potentially compromising scores of cases, the attorney who oversees Marine defense lawyers in the region said Friday.

Investigators raided the offices May 2 in search of a cellphone tied to a case being tried at the base, north of San Diego, Lt. Col. Clay Plummer told The Associated Press.

“This is just unacceptable,” said Plummer, the Marine Corps’ regional defense counsel for the West. “Just think of the U.S. federal Marshals or FBI raiding a public defender’s office, that’s what this is the equivalent to. It’s crazy.”

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The US Marshals said it was James Jones’ face that ultimately gave him away and sent him back behind bars.

For more than 3 decades the Marshals say Jones lived an apparently quiet life in South Florida after escaping prison following his conviction for murdering a fellow Army private in 1974.

Investigators say Jones lived most recently in Deerfield Beach using the name of one of his old friends, Bruce Walter Keith. But thanks to facial recognition technology, the Marshal’s say Jones’ past caught up to him.

“The first words out his mouth were, ‘I knew it would catch up to me one day,’” said U.S. Marshal’s Spokesperson Barry Golden, describing the moments after Jones’ arrest on Thursday.

Following his arrest at his workplace in Pompano Beach on Thursday, Golden said Jones admitted his true identity and his fingerprints confirmed it. Golden said Marshals used facial recognition technology on Jones’ old mugshot and found his current driver’s license photo under his fake name.

The search for a man wanted in the murder of one Caldwell County Sheriff's deputy and the attempted murder of another continues with two law enforcement agencies stepping forward with offers of rewards.

The U.S. Marshal's Office and FBI each have offered $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of 32-year-old Skip Brinkley, also known as Larry Wayne Brucke Jr.

A manhunt has been ongoing since Friday night when Brinkley allegedly shot and killed Sheriff's Deputy Adam Klutz when he responded to a 911 hang-up call for a suspected domestic violence dispute at 3940 Fox Winkler Road in the Oak Hill community. Klutz was struck in a non-protected area of his body and pronounced dead at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.

Lt. Chris Martin also was shot three times in the chest when he arrived at the scene to provide backup, but his life was saved because of the bulletproof vest he was wearing. Martin returned fire, but there is nothing to indicate that he struck Brinkley.
