Oviedo man also accused of sex attacks on missionary kids in Africa

Child-porn arrest: Oviedo man also accused of sex attacks on missionary kids in Africa
The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) published a report accusing Samuel Shamba Warlick of sexually abusing children at a housing facility for missionary families in the Congo in the late 1980s.
January 14, 2011|By Amy Pavuk, Orlando Sentinel

An Oviedo man with past ties to church missions in Africa was arrested by the FBI on child-pornography charges Friday.

The arrest of Samuel Shamba Warlick comes three months after the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) published a report unrelated to the FBI case accusing Warlick of sexually abusing children at a housing facility for missionary families in the Congo in the late 1980s.

Warlick, 39, made an appearance Friday afternoon in Orlando federal court and was ordered to be jailed until a hearing next week. He faces charges of possessing and distributing child pornography, and could be sentenced up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

According to court documents, law-enforcement officers began investigating Warlick in an undercover capacity online in December.

When agents searched his home Friday, Warlick told them he has possessed child pornography for the past 10 years and that he prefers boys who are between 13 and 16 years old.

As early as 1985, Shenica began writing poetry and various manuscripts to release her pain in a non-violent manner. Her first national award was won for a poem she wrote about her parents in a fourth-grade competition. In the eighties, she competed in the America's Kids and Teens pageant and was voted, "Most Potential." This was the spark of her would-be music career. Preparing for the talent competition, Shenica chose a song that was "too mature" - according to her mother. Not allowed to sing in the competition, she performed an oration. The pageant director commented, "You should sing. I can hear it in your voice."

After attacking the child, 34-year-old Angel Vidal Mendoza Sr. quickly left his apartment in a wheelchair, entered a backyard of a nearby vacant home and attacked his own legs with an ax, severely injuring himself, Bakersfield police reported.

The child, 4-year-old Angelo Mendoza Jr., later told police, "My daddy ate my eyes."

Doctors at Mercy Hospital said it is unknown whether the child will regain vision in his right eye.

Police: Girl, 2, contracted MRSA from beating
Investigators in Granite Falls said the boyfriend of the girl's mother threw her against a bed frame and hit her with a switch. The girl contracted a drug-resistant staph infection from the cuts suffered during the beatings. Read more »
By Bryan Johnson & KOMO Staff GRANITE FALLS, Wash. -- Police have arrested a woman and her boyfriend after a 2-year-old girl was found with multiple abuse injuries, one of which led to her contracting a drug-resistant staph infection.

Robert Beers has been booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of assault of a child, and the girl's mother was booked for investigation of criminal mistreatment.

Investigators said a tip led them to the home on October 18, and officers immediately took custody of the girl and her 6-year-old brother after seeing signs of abuse.

Officer Don Lauer said a doctor who examined the girl found three broken ribs that the girl likely suffered several months ago, as well as cuts and bruises on the back of her legs.

"The doctors said that the markings on the back of the child's legs were consistent with markings from a beating with a switch," Lauer said.

Doctors said the girl contracted methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) from the leg injuries.

Story Highlights
Florida Gov. Charles Crist orders investigation at former reform school

Four former residents, now in their 60s, claim teens were abused

There are 32 graves on land of former Florida School for Boys

Four former residents met over Internet, called for investigation

By Rich Phillips
CNN Senior Producer

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- Florida Gov. Charlie Crist has ordered an investigation to determine whether the remains of 32 students were buried decades ago in shallow graves on the grounds of a former reform school for boys.

The governor's action came at the urging of four former residents of what was known as the Florida School for Boys. The four alleged that students were abused and killed by guards decades ago at the school in Marianna, Florida, just south of the Georgia border.

In a letter Crist asked the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to investigate the graves and determine whether any crimes were committed.

"Questions remain unanswered as to the identity of the deceased and the origin of these graves," Crist wrote in his letter to the FDLE.

"The main goal is to determine the location of the graves, who owned the property at the time, and determine if any crimes were committed," FDLE spokesman Kristin Perezluha told CNN.

Authorities are only now beginning their investigation, so no one can say for certain who, if anyone, is buried in the 32 graves with the white metal crosses.

Four former residents of the school on Monday asked Crist to launch the investigation. They call themselves the White House Boys after the concrete building, where, they claim, the beatings and torture were carried out.

The White House Boys -- Roger Kiser, Michael McCarthy, Bryant Middleton and Dick Colon -- found each other on the Internet, after Kiser started a Web site. They began to talk about experiences at the reform school and eventually decided to go public, and call for an investigation.

Remote-control warriors suffer war stress too
by Scott Lindlaw / Associated Press
Thursday August 07, 2008, 3:45 PM

MARCH AIR RESERVE BASE, Calif. -- Working in an air-conditioned trailer nicknamed the Dumpster, Predator pilots peer into Iraq through a bank of computers, operating by remote-control the drone via keyboard and chat software -- and occasionally unleashing missiles on enemy fighters.

When their eight-hour shifts are done, they merge onto the highway and blend into the Southern California suburbs.

For the growing number of air national guardsmen involved in unmanned combat missions, it can be a whiplashing daily transition, and one that is taking a toll on a few of them.

"When pilots finish their job sitting in the ground control station, they climb out of that thing, hop in their car and then they drive home, and they have just been basically at war," said Col. Albert K. Aimar, commander of the 163rd Reconnaissance Wing here.

A Predator's video cameras are powerful enough to allow an operator to distinguish between a man and a woman, and between different weapons on the ground, unit commanders say. While the cameras' resolution is generally not high enough to make out faces, it is sharp, they say.

Aimar, a weapons system operator on F-4 fighters in the 1970s, said flying unmanned Predator drones in combat can weigh on a pilot and on the sensor operators who control cameras and weapons systems.

"When you come in (with a fighter) at 500-600 mph, drop a 500-pound bomb and then fly away, you don't see what happens," said Aimar, who holds a bachelor's degree in psychology. "Now you watch it all the way to impact, and I mean it's very vivid, it's right there and personal. So it does stay in people's minds for a long time."

The 163rd has called in a full-time chaplain and has enlisted the services of psychologists and psychiatrists to help ease the mental strain from this remote-controlled fighting, Aimar said.

"We've been doing this for two years now, and we're pretty adaptable," Aimar said. But, he said, "It's causing some family issues, some relationship issues. It's just not something we ever had to deal with."

Similarly, chaplains have been brought on at Predator bases in Texas, Arizona and Nevada.

TAMPA — At age 2, Makaila Thompson could count to 10.

She adored Dora the Explorer and once made a game of dropping toys in the toilet and trying to flush.

When Makaila was born Jan. 10, 2006, the first thing her mother noticed were her eyes.

"You see her?" Monique Thompson remembers musing, the baby in her arms.

When Makaila started to talk, she talked a lot. She could sing Alicia Keys' No One from start to finish. She once ate a double cheeseburger, small fries and a juice in one sitting.

Makaila died Sept. 5, at the hands of her mother's boyfriend, according to Hillsborough sheriff's deputies. Investigators say she suffered blows to her chest so powerful, her heart tore.

PTSD on trial: Toddler dies, step-father charged

Toddler also hurt in incident before his death
Attorney: PTSD won't be a defense in Flugga case
By RUSS ZIMMER • Advocate Reporter • August 3, 2008

NEWARK -- A two-word phrase -- "Daddy hit" -- was uttered by 3-year-old Carson Hanson on multiple occasions and was witnessed by two people before his death in June, according to investigation records released last week.

Prosecutors continue to look into the possibility of previous abuse by Corey Flugga, Carson's stepfather who has been charged in connection with the boy's death. Flugga steadfastly has denied ever laying a hand on Carson.

Although that issue remains open, neither side is questioning the mental stability of Flugga, a decorated Iraq war veteran who told detectives he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, but did not think that medical opinion was justified. His defense attorney even said it won't be used as a defense.

Carson was pronounced dead at Licking Memorial Hospital the evening of June 21. Suspicious bruising, as well as what emergency officials thought was strange behavior by Flugga, led to Flugga's arrest two days later.

Licking County Deputy Coroner Dr. Jeff Lee determined Carson had died from internal bleeding caused by tremendous blunt force trauma to his abdomen. The bruising pattern on the child's stomach was consistent with that of a fist, he wrote.

Flugga has no criminal record outside of an underage consumption conviction in Hancock County, but prosecutors are interested in looking into possibly undocumented cases of abuse.

Warrant Details Doctor's Alleged Non-Reporting Of Abuse

Warrant Details Doctor's Alleged Non-Reporting Of Abuse
By CHRISTINE DEMPSEY | Courant Staff Writer
July 4, 2008
A mother suspecting her son was being sexually abused told the family doctor she had found her son naked and asleep beneath the man.

But the South Windsor doctor, Raymond C. Kurker, didn't report the mother's suspicions to the state. He still wasn't sure if the boy had been abused, according to the warrant for his arrest.

The warrant was released Thursday in Superior Court in Manchester, where Kurker, 55, was arraigned on a charge of failing to report the alleged abuse.

Doctors, police officers and teachers are among the "mandated reporters" who must notify the state Department of Children and Families of suspected child abuse "as soon as is practical" but not more than 12 hours after the incident, said South Windsor police Sgt. Scott Custer. The mandated reporter is not required to gather evidence.

Soldier who beat infant sons spared jail time

Soldier who beat infant sons spared jail time

WINNIPEG -- He's lost his children -- but regained his freedom.

A Canadian soldier who repeatedly assaulted his six-month-old triplets walked out of jail Tuesday after a judge ruled he doesn't have to serve more time behind bars.

The 25-year-old father -- who can't be named to protect the identity of his children -- broke down in tears after being given an 18-month conditional sentence that allows him to remain free in the community.

The disturbing case has raised the issue of post-traumatic stress disorder for soldiers.

The court heard this week the Winnipeg-based soldier was suffering from a serious mental disorder caused by several factors -- including his time spent in Afghanistan -- when he repeatedly assaulted his children.

The tiny victims were suffering from a total of 19 broken bones when they were taken to hospital last summer. They have since recovered.

The man will be under a curfew and must attend therapy and counselling. He is also banned from having any unsupervised contact with his children or any children under the age of 18.

Canadian Soldier who beat babies blames war zone stress

Soldier who beat babies blames war zone stress
Mike McIntyre, Winnipeg Free Press
Published: Monday, June 23
WINNIPEG - A Canadian soldier was suffering from a serious mental disorder caused by several factors - including his time spent in Afghanistan - when he repeatedly assaulted his six-month-old triplet sons, a Winnipeg court heard Monday.

Psychologist David Kolton submitted a 21-page report to the court providing a detailed look into the mind of the 25-year-old father, who has pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm.

Provincial court Judge Marvin Garfinkel is expected to sentence the man Tuesday afternoon. He is seeking time served - nine months - plus probation, while the Crown wants him to serve an additional 18 months behind bars.

Defence lawyer Rod Brecht told the court Monday his client didn't intend to inflict pain on his baby boys and was actually stunned to see the extent of their injuries.

The tiny victims were suffering from a total of 19 broken bones when they were taken to hospital last September. They have since recovered.

The father - a Winnipeg-based soldier who can't be named to protect the children's identities - was already dealing with a number of difficult personal issues when he joined the military in 2001, including being abandoned by his own father at a young age, court was told.

He was deployed to Kandahar in 2006 for a 3 1/2-month tour and came back a much different person, said Kolton, psychologist.

The soldier's job was to load equipment on to military planes and trucks and he became extremely frustrated by the lack of front-line action he saw.

That resulted in various run-ins with authority during which his explosive temper quickly took over.

"I wanted to get out there and do something. I knew many of the infantry . . . I could see it in their eyes that they expected more from me. I felt helpless," he told Kolton.

He also got into trouble during a sidetrip to Budapest in which he claims to have been drugged in a bar, beaten and robbed.

Soldier's wife charged with starving 11 month old daugter to death

Army wife charged with starving daughter

The Associated Press
Posted : Friday Mar 14, 2008 5:57:28 EDT

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The wife of a soldier deployed in Iraq is charged with killing their 11-month-old daughter after the infant was found starved to death in their littered home on the Army post Fort Leonard Wood, authorities said.

The child was found dead in her mother’s arms last month, federal prosecutors said.

Kristin Marie Phillips, 33, of Fort Leonard Wood, was charged with killing her daughter — the federal equivalent of a murder charge.

A spokesman for the U.S. prosecutor said Phillips would be facing at least a life sentence if convicted. Prosecutors have not reached a decision on whether to pursue the possible maximum penalty of death.

Three other children, from ages 2 to 13, were also in the home and have since been placed in the custody of the Missouri Department of Social Services.

Phillips’ husband is a soldier who was deployed to Iraq at the time of the girl’s death but has since returned to Fort Leonard Wood. Prosecutors did not release his name.
