While state police continue to look into why 43 year old Julian With got on the Thruway the wrong way early Friday morning causing a deadly crash, his friends are speaking out. They say the Iraq war veteran had a lot on his mind.

“He was one of them easy go guy. He had his problems. But it was probably from the war, you know,” says neighbor David Stafford.

Aside from the war, Stafford says there were issues at home. With recently wrote on his facebook page that his wife had left him. Just hours before the crash, he was arrested by Bethlehem police for violating an order of protection in a domestic dispute. Add to that a post on his facebook page that said his mother had three months to live.

GREEN BAY, Wis. – After watching their son survive a pair of military stints in Kuwait and Afghanistan, Andrew Steiner's parents were devastated when he was killed helping the victims of a minor Brown County traffic crash last month. But Douglas and Nicole Steiner took solace in one fact: Steiner died the way he lived, helping other people.

Andrew Steiner, a 26-year-old U.S. Army reservist, was driving to Howard just after midnight Jan. 27 when he and a friend came upon the scene of a minor crash. As they checked on the vehicles' occupants, another vehicle slammed into the wreckage, launching Steiner over an overpass railing about 30 feet away.

A U.S. Marine lance corporal home on leave for Christmas was one of two young men killed in a single-car crash Thursday morning in west Wichita.

Thomas Krausch described his son, Devan, as outgoing, “just an all-around good kid” who was well-loved by his family and friends.

“It seemed like he would always be the one to help somebody else,” Thomas Krausch said. “He made his mom and I very proud.”

Wichita police say Devan M. Krausch, 22, was riding in a 2005 Chrysler 300 sedan with 21-year-old Marcus W. McClellan when the car struck a culvert beside 13th Street about 2:30 a.m. Thursday. The car became airborne and struck a power pole and utility lines at 13th and Liberty, near 135th Street West, Wichita police Capt. John Speer said.

The men were westbound on 13th Street at the time of the crash.

Krausch, who was thrown from the vehicle, died after being taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis.

McClellan died at the scene.

Both men were Wichita residents.

Thomas Krausch said his son, a 2008 Northwest High School graduate, was stationed at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, Calif. He had been home for just a few days.

McClellan’s family did not immediately respond to The Eagle’s request for an interview Thursday night.

The 21-year-old had attended both Bishop Carroll High School and Bethel College, according to his Facebook page. McClellan also is listed as a member of the U.S. Army on the social networking site.

Iraq Veteran "All I remember is a boy in the window"

Nicholas McCallon served two tours in Iraq and he is an example of what these men and women are like. While most people are paying attention to the tragedies after Hurricane Sandy, they aren't paying much attention to the fact many of the responders are in fact combat veterans like McCallon.

They serve, risk their lives for one reason, to help. Help defend this nation and help when natural disasters hit. Help when people of other nations are in harms way and this nation says they must go. Help when their comrades are in danger. For them it isn't a matter of just "doing their duty" while in uniform, but they carry the same willingness to help throughout their lives.

Why did McCallon rush to the mangled car? Because someone needed him to.

Now the image of the dead 7 year old in the car will stay with him as he holds his own newborn son, born right after the accident. Yet too many of us never stop to think of what they go through to do what they do for us.

Nicholas McCallon, 27, of Everett, with his newborn son, Nathan, was the first to respond at the scene of a fatal accident on Evergreen Way on Oct. 30. After going home from the scene, McCallon was awoken at 3:20 a.m. by his wife, telling him that it was time to head to the hospital. Nathan arrived two weeks earlier than expected.

EVERETT -- Nicholas McCallon had seen death in its most raw and indelible forms during two tours of duty in Iraq.

What the ex-soldier hadn't prepared for was the death of a child less than a mile from his Everett home.

McCallon, 27, was the first person to reach the scene of a fatal crash Tuesday night in the 7800 block of Evergreen Way. A 7-year-old Everett boy died.

McCallon, his wife and young son were headed to a friend's house for dinner when they say a black BMW zipped by them along Evergreen Way, swerving in and out of lanes.

"Nick, I don't want you to be anywhere near that car," Felicia McCallon remembers telling her husband.

Less than a minute later, they saw the car again, now reduced to crumpled metal on the rain-soaked thoroughfare.

As medics tried to help the boy, McCallon put compression on the woman's wound and tried to comfort her.

"The first words out of her mouth (were), 'All I remember is a boy in the window,' " McCallon said.

Only when he returned to his car, while his wife gave a statement to the police, did McCallon allow the magnitude of the tragedy to get to him. read more here

Wrong-way crash on Pike leaves 2 dead
By Erin Smith
Sunday, September 9, 2012

A U.S. Marine corporal who survived a combat tour in Iraq died Friday night when state police said an elderly man driving the wrong way on the Mass Pike slammed head-on into his car.

Robert Magee, 28, was on his way to Chicopee for reservist training, according to his family, when state police said the wrong-way driver, 84-year-old Clarence Lux of New Britain, Conn., collided with his car near Exit 6 in Ludlow at about 8:30 p.m.

Both men were taken to Bay State Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead, state police said. No injuries were reported for those in the other two vehicles involved in the four-car crash. About 15 minutes before the crash, police received “numerous” reports of a car driving on the wrong side of the road, but state police said they were unable to locate the vehicle. Trooper Todd Nolan said authorities believe it was Lux’s car.

Shametra "Meme" Stamps survived two tours in Iraq, including one as a driver.

On Friday morning, the veteran driver with the 365th Combat Support Sustainment Battalion out of Jackson, also a recent Hinds County Sheriff's Department employee, was killed in a car crash on her way to work.

"She put down many a mile up and down those roads in Iraq," said Sgt. Maj. Dwayne Howard, for whom Stamps was a driver both overseas and at home.

Stamps was a pro, he said. Even under fire, she kept her head.

Stamps, 30, who her friends say was a "girly girl," always maintained a positive attitude in spite of the rigors of the job.

Brown, a U.S. Navy seaman, was one of a handful of veterans recognized during a ceremony at the Red Bank church.

"He shook my hand afterward and had tears in his eyes," said Charles Clemons, another veteran honored at the ceremony. "He was very touched by the gratitude."

But just hours after receiving the accolades, Brown was killed in a head-on crash.

Marine from Long Lake dies in car crash

U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Caleb Austin served multiple tours of duty overseas, and was ready for another tour in Afghanistan, said his father, Kevin Austin, of Houghton, in western New York.

"He certainly loved his country, he loved his God, and he loved his wife," said Austin, after his son died Sunday in a car crash in West Virginia.

Caleb Austin, a Long Lake Central School District graduate, served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Though one of his close friends had died on his last tour of duty and he had suffered from symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, Kevin Austin said his son planned to return to Afghanistan because he believed that's where God wanted him to be.

Caleb Austin took his faith seriously, and had a number of Christian tattoos, including a cross draped with dog tags that listed the last names of three friends, his father said.

One of those friends, Steven Clark, and Austin's squad leader from Afghanistan will escort his body from West Virginia to Long Lake for his funeral on Saturday and military funeral on Sunday. He will be laid to rest in Long Lake Cemetery.

Kevin Austin last saw his son when he and his wife visited New York City for Fleet Week, a celebration that honors the U.S. sea services.

"It just made a world of difference to him to know that there are people who really do genuinely care and are grateful," Austin said.

Brother, Sister Die in Crash on Way to Stepmother's Funeral

Chester Mills was supposed to bury his wife in Indiana earlier this week.

But while two of his children were driving from Georgia to attend their stepmother's funeral, their car spun out on a snowy highway and was broadsided by an oncoming tractor-trailer. The crash killed them and a friend who was driving the car.

Now Mills is left dealing with more impossible loss.

"It's a difficult day," Rev. Rodney Coffman told AOL News during a brief telephone interview, as he traveled this morning from the funeral to the cemetery where Amber Mills was being buried.

Mills, 43, died at her home in Waveland Monday morning after a battle with lung cancer. Her funeral, scheduled to be held Thursday -- the day of the accident -- was postponed until today, Coffman said.

Logan Mills, 21, and Amanda Mills, 25, died in the crash along with Anthony Suggs, 25, of Ruskin, Fla. Suggs apparently lost control of the car on the snow-covered road, causing it to spin into the northbound lane of State Road 47 into the path of the truck. The car tumbled into a ravine and the truck landed on top of it.

"It's serious, serious business. No one knows when your number is going to come up."

Fourteen church members were traveling to a sister church in upstate New York when the van flipped at least three times. Police said the aftermath was horrific.
