The heavily armed suspect, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, was apprehended by police in a rear parking lot of the theater, Frank Fania, a police spokesman, told CNN. The suspect was not immediately identified, though Fania said he was believed to be in his early 20s.

"He did not resist. He did not put up a fight," Fania said. Police seized a rifle and a handgun from the suspect, and another gun was found in the theater, he said.

Fort Bliss soldier's fatal shooting was isolated event

General Pittard: Fort Bliss soldier's fatal shooting was isolated event

By Daniel Borunda / El Paso Times
Posted: 01/20/2012

FORT BLISS -- A shooting that killed one soldier and wounded two others last weekend was an isolated case, said Fort Bliss' commanding general.

Maj. Gen. Dana J.H. Pittard, commander of Fort Bliss and the 1st Armored Division, on Thursday spoke at length about crime and other issues facing the growing Army post.

Some El Paso residents have expressed concerns that crime would rise along with the population of Fort Bliss, and Pittard said such concerns are unfounded despite three high-profile soldier-linked homicides over the past year.

Early Sunday, Pvt. Damien W. Bailey was killed in a shooting that wounded Pvt. Preston Brown and Spc. Tyrone Head outside the Fussion nightclub in the Lower Dyer area.

ANTHEM - Two crime scenes, more than 80 miles apart. One in Sedona, the other in Anthem.

Four people dead, one of them a suspected shooter. Now, investigators are trying to figure out if Drew Ryan Maras is responsible for both deadly scenes.

Investigators say Maras the man who shot and killed Maricopa County Sheriff Deputy William Coleman during a burglary call in Anthem.

Other deputies fired and killed Maras.

But is he also the man who killed Jim Johnson and Carol Raynsford, friends from New Hampshire visiting Sedona over the weekend.

One key piece of evidence has investigators in two counties thinking there may be a link. That piece of evidence is the weapon Drew Ryan Maras used to shoot Deputy Coleman. It’s similar to what was used to kill the two in Sedona.

Adding to the mystery is the emerging details of Maras's background, neighbors describe him as your average guy. A Marine, 30 years old, with a consuming interest in the unexplained -- an author who wrote about the apocalypse, Armageddon, and judgment day.

Christmas Shooting: 7 People Shot Dead In Texas Home, Motive Unclear By DANNY ROBBINS 12/26/11

Judge dismisses Ky. family's lawsuit over shooting at Fort Bliss

Judge dismisses Ky. family's lawsuit over shooting
BRETT BARROUQUERE, Associated Press
September 2, 2011

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit on Friday that had been brought by the family of a teenager killed during a shooting at a military post in Texas, saying federal laws prevent the teen's mother from pursuing damages from the government.

U.S. District Judge Charles R. Simpson III in Louisville ruled that the law is designed to prevent judicial "second guessing of policy considerations" by the military.

Renee Richardson, the mother of 18-year-old Ezra Gerald Smith, sued the U.S. Army in October seeking $8.75 million. She accused the Army of negligence in diagnosing and treating the alleged shooter, Spc. Gerald Polanco.

"However, plaintiffs do not point to any specific applicable regulations which removed discretion from Spc. Polanco's chain of command," Simpson wrote.

Polanco was charged with murder but ruled incompetent to stand trial by a military judge a few months later.

Smith was at Fort Bliss, along the Texas-New Mexico line, where his stepfather was based. He was shot in the back of the head April 24, 2009.

Because the lawsuit has been dismissed and Polanco has been found incompetent and may never stand trial, there's little chance the family will ever get justice, said Richardson's attorney, Sheila Hiestand.

"It's certainly a tragedy," Hiestand said. "It should never have been allowed to occur."

Family Mourns Marine Murdered In Baltimore
January 17, 2011 6:31 PM
BALTIMORE (WJZ) — The family of a Marine is still struggling to come to terms with his murder at a club in Baltimore, just days before he was heading to Afghanistan. His sister spoke to Mike Hellgren just days after police arrested a teenager and charged him with the brutal crime.
Marine Sergeant Chase Love worked in some of the most dangerous combat zones in the world in Iraq and Afghanistan. His family never imagined he would die at a hookah lounge during his first visit to Baltimore with friends.
Police say 18-year-old Ronald Johnson shot him over and over again during an argument, before fleeing and leaving Love to die on the sidewalk.
For the first time, Love’s sister is speaking about the crime from her home near New Orleans.
“I think this would have been his third time going to Afghanistan and he always came home scot-free, untouched, never hurt. I just couldn’t even compose myself. I just couldn’t believe it,” said Keoka Love. “I really thought I was living a dream.”
