Firefighters shot because shooter "liked to kill"

Shooter liked to kill people but you won't read his name here. That is the link to the report on Huffington Post. I think it is more important to focus on the lives lost.

They risked their lives to save people and the shooter took advantage of how much they care about others to take their lives.

The dead men were identified as police Lt. Michael Chiapperini, 43, the Webster Police Department's public information officer; and 19-year-old Tomasz Kaczowka, also a 911 dispatcher.

Pickering described Chiapperini as a "lifetime firefighter" with nearly 20 years in the department, and he called Kaczowka a "tremendous young man."

Kaczowka's brother, reached at the family home Monday night, said he didn't want to talk.

The two wounded firefighters, Joseph Hofstetter and Theodore Scardino, were in stable condition Tuesday at Strong Memorial Hospital, the chief said. Both were awake and alert and are expected to recover.

Hofstetter, also a full-timer with the Rochester Fire Department, was hit once in the pelvis, and the bullet lodged in his spine, authorities said. Scardino was hit in the chest and knee.

Cathy Bartlett was at a vigil Monday night with her teenage son, who was good friends with Kaczowka. Bartlett's husband, Mark Bartlett, has been a firefighter there for 25 years but missed the call this morning.

One of the guns recovered was a military-style .223-caliber semiautomatic Bushmaster rifle with flash suppression, the same make and caliber weapon used in the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn., Pickering said.

"It does appear that it was a trap that was set," the police chief said (CNN) -- A man convicted of killing his grandmother decades ago allegedly ambushed firefighters on Monday, fatally shooting two of them as they arrived to battle a blaze in upstate New York, police said.

Two other firefighters were wounded in the attack in the Rochester-area town of Webster. Investigators believe the suspect, (the shooter), 62, deliberately lured them to a house fire, Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering said.

Authorities do not know how (the shooter) who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene, obtained the weapon he used in Monday's shooting or why he opened fire, Pickering told reporters.

Shooting Ignites Riot in Montreal

Shooting Ignites Riot in Montreal AP
MONTREAL (Aug. 11) - A riot broke out and an officer was shot in the leg late Sunday in the Monday neighborhood where a young man was shot and killed by police a day earlier.

Several hundred police officers fanned out trying to track down an undetermined number of youths who began setting fires in the neighborhood before running off.

Firetrucks arriving to fight the blazes in the borough of Montreal North were pelted with beer bottles, while bus shelters were trashed.

People of all ages were seen looting computers, TVs and other items from stores.
Montreal police spokesman Ian Lafreniere said two police officers and an ambulance technician suffered non-life threatening injuries. One of the officers was shot in the leg.

The ambulance technician was hit in the head by a Molotov cocktail that did not ignite.
Police had made some arrests by 3 a.m. Monday but were unable to give many details.
