June 3, 2016

“From myself, my officers and my crews, we’re here to help them and we’re devastated when we can’t. We can’t pretend to understand their pain. We can’t pretend to understand their loss. But we do share in their suffering.”
Jeff Mincy
Crews search for 4 missing in Texas from flooded Army truck
Morgan's Point Resort Fire and Rescue works on Lake Belton near the scene of an accident at Fort Hood at Owl Creek Park near Gatesville, Texas, on Thursday, June 2, 2016. Fort Hood says several soldiers are dead and six are missing after an Army troop truck was washed from a low-water crossing and overturned in a rain-swollen creek at Fort Hood in Central Texas. A statement from the Texas Army post says the accident happened about 11:30 a.m. Thursday in an area near Cold Springs and Owl Creek.

When Jeff Mincy arrived on the scene of a deadly swift water rescue on Fort Hood Thursday, he said, he didn't see the Army’s large troop carrying vehicle, which was later found in the usually dry Owl Creek.

“It was flowing pretty fast,” said Mincy, a seven-year chief of EMS in Coryell County, of Owl Creek. “I can’t estimate how fast it was flowing, but it was faster than I would have felt comfortable putting anything into the water. When we did find the vehicle, we could see the tires sticking up out of the water, so in that position where the vehicle settled, it had to have been about eight feet deep.”

Five Army soldiers died and at least three were injured in connection with the Army light medium tactical vehicle accident Thursday morning where Owl Creek meets East Range Road on Fort Hood.

Crews are still searching for at least four missing soldiers, according to Army officials.

June Veterans Events for Central Florida

From Cathy Haynes

June list of Central FL veteran, military and patriotic events

*Send me your events – people cannot attend an event if they don’t know about it!
*Please share this information and events with your friends and interested others and attend.  Post where appropriate.

NOTE:  A little bit of ‘housekeeping’ – I will likely be signing up for a bulk email sender like Constant Contact. It currently takes me about 5 hours just to send the emails on my list because of various problems with internet spam detectors and firewalls.  My sanity and patience are being challenged!  If you do not want to be included on such a mass-mailer device, please let me know and I will send the event list the ‘regular’ manual way.

On June 4th 1942, a vastly outnumbered and outgunned U.S. Fleet defeated the finest of the Imperial Japanese Navy in the waters off a small Pacific Atoll named Midway. D-Day Commemoration -  On June 6, 1944, more than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline, to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which, “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end, the Allies gained a foot-hold in Continental Europe. The cost in lives on D-Day was high. More than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded, but their sacrifice allowed more than 100,000 Soldiers to begin the slow, hard slog across Europe, to defeat Adolf Hitler’s troops.  Thank a WW2 European theater veteran, especially one involved in D-Day.

FORT HOOD ACCIDENT MM 02
A Texas DPS helicopter flies over Lake Belton near the scene of an accident at Fort Hood at Owl Creek Park in Gatesville on Thursday, June 2, 2016.
FORT HOOD - Officials said the overturning of an armored vehicle that left five Fort Hood soldiers dead and another four missing Thursday remains under investigation today.

Names are not being released at this time.

Maj. Gen. John Uberti and officials with III Corps held a brief news conference on the matter this morning.

"This accident is a tragedy – the loss of one soldier is too many," said Chris Haug, III Corps media relations chief.

The armored vehicle the soldiers were in overturned at a low-water crossing during a training mission. Officials said the truck overturned at the Owl Creek tactical low-water crossing and East Range Road near north Belton Lake. Owl Creek is on the northern fringe of Fort Hood.

Three soldiers were in stable condition Thursday evening at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center. They were rescued from the water near the vehicle and immediately transported to the Coryell Memorial Healthcare System in Gatesville before their transfer to Darnall.

Emergency responders continued searching for soldiers from the 3rd Battalion, 16th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division.

Grieving Family "Maybe they'll listen now that he's dead"

'Maybe they'll listen now that he's dead': Crestview family grieves loss of 26-year-old Iraq War veteran
NWF Daily News

CRESTVIEW — There are two things Drew Winkler’s family want you to know about him.

The first is that the 26-year-old Iraq War veteran loved his two sons fiercely.

Special to the Daily NewsDrew Winkler smiles as he carries his stepson Christian Custer in this photo from about a year ago. This photo has gone viral on social media in the wake of Winkler's suicide on Memorial Day.
The second is that by choosing to take his own life on Memorial Day, he wasn’t just trying to escape from the unrelenting pain of post-traumatic stress disorder. Drew, they believe, wanted to send a message.

“He tried to get help while he was alive, but no one outside the family would listen,” Drew’s older brother, Corey, said. “Maybe they’ll listen now that he’s dead.”

Early Monday morning, Drew walked past the bedroom at his parents’ house where his two little boys — Christian, who’s almost 3, and Caydan, 18 months — were sleeping. He slipped past his father, who was asleep on the sofa in the living room, and walked into his dad’s home office. There he found a gun, walked outside, sat in a car and shot himself.

He had sent text messages to his family, assuring them he loved them. At 5:06 a.m., he made one last post to his Facebook page.

“1 of 22 per day ... (why) can’t they just help us ... goodbye”

The number 22 refers to the number of veterans who reportedly commit suicide every day.

Vietnam Veteran Died in Motorcycle Accident After Seeing The Wall

Vietnam veteran was making first trip to memorial
The Herald Bulletin
By Scott L. Miley

June 1, 2016

PENDLETON — Craig Van Brunt had hoped to visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., for years.

This past Memorial Day weekend, Van Brunt, 66, of Pendleton, managed to see the symbolic wall Friday with about 80 other Hoosier motorcyclists participating in the annual Rolling Thunder Ride for Freedom and Ride to the Wall.

Two days later, he joined in a demonstration ride urging Washington political leaders to find prisoners of war and service members still missing in action. After the demonstration, his motorcycle crashed on the way to the group's hotel. He died at George Washington University Hospital.

"This is something unfortunately that we have to live with," said Mike Clark, president of the Rolling Thunder Indiana Chapter 1, which organized area residents in the ride. "Most of us who ride motorcycles all know that once you swing your leg over the saddle, it could happen to any of us at any time."

Clark added, "At least he got to see the wall and participate in the Ride for Freedom demonstration. He got to accomplish his mission."

Iraq Veteran Fired by Trump University for Being "Weekend Warrior"

Iraq war veteran claims Trump University fired her for serving in the Army Reserve
Corrine Sommers dismissed in October 2007
By CNN
June 02, 2016
"It's a derogatory term (weekend warrior) when it comes from someone else, especially when I'm an Iraqi veteran," she testified.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) - An Iraq war veteran claims she was fired by Trump University because she needed two days a month off in order to serve in the Army Reserve.

Corrine Sommers, who worked for Trump University for five months, sued Trump University after she was dismissed in October 2007. She reached a confidential settlement in that case. But she later alleged that she was fired because of her military service in a November 2012 deposition she gave in a federal class action suit that accused the school of fraud. That deposition was unsealed this week.

Sommers alleged that a supervisor at the school "complained when I would have to take days off to do my military service." And she said that as part of a poor performance review she received, "they wrote it was an issue that I was in the military." She needed to serve two days a month while she worked at Trump University, she testified. She said she was fired when returning from a vacation that she had refused to cut short to respond to a call asking her to come into work.

Veterans Did Their Jobs, Others Need to Do the Same

Stop Apologizing For Being a Veteran!
Wounded Times
Kathie Costos
June 1, 2016

Veterans really need to stop apologizing for being a veteran and acting like they just do not deserve anything. I get into all kinds of conversations but usually they start out with "I'm sorry to bother you, but" and then they go on to tell me what is on their mind. That is what I'm here for. Isn't it?

I have a job that pays my bills from 6 am to 1 pm and from 1 pm to 9 pm working for veterans is emotionally priceless, especially when they tell me that it all makes sense now to them. Sooner of later I figure out that the help they got before that beat them down instead of lifting them up.

Just had one of those calls.

Veterans need to understand there is nothing they need they would need had they not served. Physical, emotional and often financial needs after leaving the service are there because they served, risked their lives, endured all kinds of hardships and then got beaten down when they tried to get help, advice or simply someone to talk to.

Ok, that said, start with the simple fact that you will never, ever totally fit back in with civilians. They are not like you and you are no longer like them.  You used to be but the day you put on your first pair of GI boots, it is almost as if the soles sucked up military energy straight into your soul. Sure, when you got out you put on a pair of sneakers or sandals but the boots got into your bloodstream.

You went from civilian to GI (government issued) to veteran.  You did not go back to being called civilian again for that reason. Find other veterans.  If you cannot find your age group, then find a group of veterans you at least feel comfortable with.  Peer support groups work for a reason, a shared experience, even if that experience happens years or decades apart.

You are entitled to have all the same rights as civilians but because you served you get more. One of them is the VA. It is there for you because you earned the right to go there for medical care and, if disabled, compensation for what your service did to you.  The problem is, the VA cannot predict the influx of veterans finally figuring that one out. If you show up, you need to get in line, so be prepared for that.

One more thing on that part is it is not all their fault. We've seen all that is wrong being wrong for decades. Congress has jurisdiction of the VA but they hate to remind anyone of that. I've been tracking all this for decades and can assure you that none of this is new.

If you have a claim and they turn you down, go to one of the established groups like the DAV, VFW and American Legion so they can make sure you submit everything you need and get help to fight for yourself. Do not take no as the final answer if you know you are telling the truth. Hate to say it but, more often than not, if a veteran takes his story to the press, it gets fixed really fast.

If you read an article in a newspaper and it is wrong, like the "22 a day" contact the reporter and get them to fix it or defend it or expand on it.  They get paid to report but they don't get to make it up as they go along or pretend they did even basic research.  If they didn't take time to do that, then you know they didn't really care.

If you have a problem with the VA, then contact your member of Congress. They may pretend to not have known any of this has been going on, but look up all the years and all the excuses given, then look up how long your elected official has been in office. You'll notice how they have been shocked many, many times before, promised to do something only to discover it was no where close to being what was necessary.

Hold members of Congress accountable.  Look up their voting record.  Call them and ask them questions.  You owe them nothing and remember, they want your vote.  Make them earn it.

If you are looking for a job, then be proud of the fact you were part of a team risking their lives instead of just their egos. If the employer is worried about you having PTSD, then remind them because of the VA working on PTSD since the 80's, civilians have been getting helped for traumas that happened to them and they will never be able to tell if that candidate has PTSD or not.

Do not be ashamed if you have PTSD since they are ignorant of what it is, only be ashamed if you have not finally figured that out yourself. You do not have to disclose it to them anymore than you have to disclose any other medical condition that does not hinder the job you want to be hired to do.

If you turn to a charity claiming to be doing something for veterans, make sure they actually are and if not, then get on social media and let others know so they think twice before giving them any money or sending anyone to them. (That includes me)

You did your job.  It is time to stop apologizing for that and start making sure other people do their jobs.

Sgt. Marcus Lamarr Nelson Sr. Served "Loud and Proud" Died in Texas Jail

Soldiers remember sergeant who died in Bell County Jail
Killeen Daily Herald

June 1, 2016

When Fort Hood officials released the name of a soldier who died May 23 in the Bell County Jail in Belton, those who served with him were both shocked he was in jail in the first place and devastated at the news.

Sgt. Marcus Lamarr Nelson Sr., 45, whose home of record is listed as Detroit, Mich., entered active duty service in April 2005 as a petroleum supply specialist. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division since June 2015.

The sergeant was being held on military charges of departing from his appointed place of duty, disobeying a lawful order from a noncommissioned officer, four counts of dereliction of duty and four counts of communicating a threat.

Nelson deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from October 2008 to September 2009 and from September 2006 to September 2007.

“I met him in January 2006 at (Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.) when I was 18,” said Josh LeBlanc, a veteran from Kountze, Texas, who deployed to Iraq with Nelson. “He was ‘loud and proud’ every morning and he was always upholding the standard. If you felt like ‘skating’ and getting out of doing things, he would still uphold the standards. That’s what he was known for.”

LeBlanc said Nelson was not only a great soldier, but an amazing person.

“He really taught me a lot about being a good person,” he said. “I was really shocked to hear about his death. I’m torn up about it.”
