Vietnam Veteran Shot Robbers and Solved Other Crimes!

Vietnam veteran justified in killing robber
KSDK News
Jacob Long
February 04, 2017
Gibbons said both suspects were wanted for other violent crimes across the bi-state that could now see some closure.

"We're able to probably, I believe, able to solve possibly dozens of other armed robberies in the area."
An armed veteran from St. Louis killed one man and injured another during an armed robbery attempt in the metro east.

But, on Friday, prosecutors said the veteran's actions are justified, and could help solve dozens of other violent crimes in Illinois and Missouri.

Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons said this case should serve as a warning to criminals. If you're coming to the Metro East to break the law, you could end up staring down the barrel of a gun.

Thursday morning, Venice police were called to the 200-block of Abbott Street for reports of a shooting. Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons said it happened as a 70-year-old Vietnam Veteran from St. Louis was dropping off his friend.

PTSD on Trial: VA and Air Force Veteran Needing Help

And we should wonder which contractor staffed this clinic for a lot of money instead of VA employees doing it because they love veterans...and usually are veterans.
Trial starting for ex-Air Force major accused of trying to kill his wife and her dad in Broward
Sun Sentinel
Paula McMahon

"He goes to the VA that day, looking for help and they just loaded him up with more pills," Haddad said. "This is a guy who was a major in the Air Force, he has a master's degree. This is a stand-up guy, a highly regarded, trusted retired member of the military who served his country."
Thomas Maffei Sun Sentinel / Broward Sheriff's Office Handout
Thomas Maffei, 49, a retired Air Force major from Parkland, is charged with attempted first-degree murder in the November 2012 shootings of his estranged wife and her father in Coral Springs. Both victims survived.
Hours before retired U.S. Air Force Major Thomas Maffei shot and seriously injured his estranged wife and her father in Coral Springs, he went to a Veterans Administration crisis clinic in Palm Beach County and told staff he was under extreme stress.

When Maffei goes on trial Monday in Broward Circuit Court on attempted murder and other charges, he won't dispute that he fired three shots through his then-wife's apartment door as she and her father leaned against it, trying to keep him out.

CONGRESS: Stop Making Veterans Wait

Members of Congress, you are now on notice that we noticed what you failed to do.

There are no more acceptable excuses you can use. You can no longer pretend to be stunned by the outcome of your failures.

Yesterday I met with a young veteran and his wife after working all day. Another veteran had reached out to him and he needed some answers. Above all else, he needed some hope that his life could get better. It was one more case of massive failures being repeated while these veterans are forced to wait for our elected officials to actually do their jobs.

Sitting with them, listening to their story, seeing their young daughter running around, reminded me of what it was like when I was just a little older than they are. They feel just as lost as I did, just as alone, hearing the wrong advise, being deluded by what others say and feeling abandoned as well as betrayed.

Over three decades after I met my husband, the fact that we knew more back then, than these new veterans know, is a testament to our tenacity and your neglect.

In 1946 the first House Veterans Affairs Committee was seated. As for the Senate "The Veterans' Affairs committee was created in 1970 to transfer responsibilities for veterans from the Finance and Labor committees to a single panel. From 1947 to 1970, matters relating to veterans compensation and veterans generally were referred to the Committee on Finance, while matters relating to the vocational rehabilitation, education, medical care, civil relief, and civilian readjustment of veterans were referred to the Committee on Labor and Public Welfare."

Frankly, ever since then, the committees have been sitting down on the job ever since. We're tired of hearing the bullshit. We're tired of you holding hearings year after year, listening to the result of your failures when devastated families share their heartbreaking stories with you, hoping you will actually do something to prevent others from experiencing their anguish.

Here are the questions you need to get answers for if you want to prove you actually give a crap and deserve to be put back in office again.

How many Bills have you passed on Suicide Prevention?
You need look back at least to 2007 when you passed the Joshua Omvig Suicide Prevention Act in January of the 110th session and signed into law by President Bush in November of 2007.
What has PTSD Awareness achieved?

The National Center for PTSD promotes awareness of PTSD and effective treatments throughout the year. Starting in 2010, Congress named June 27th PTSD Awareness Day (S. Res. 455). In 2014, the Senate designated the full month of June for National PTSD Awareness (S. Res. 481). Efforts are underway to continue this designation for the third consecutive year in 2016.

What has military/veteran Suicide Prevention achieved?
As directed by Section 733 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2009, the Secretary of Defense established a Task Force “to examine matters relating to prevention of suicide by members of the Armed Forces.” The Department of Defense (DoD) Task Force on the Prevention of Suicide by Members of the Armed Forces(hereafter referred to as the Task Force) was created and comprised of seven DoD and seven non-DoD professionals with expertise in national suicide prevention policy, military personnel policy, research in the field of suicide prevention, clinical care in mental health, military chaplaincy and pastoral care, and military families.

The Task Force, established in August 2009, has prepared the following report for the Secretary of Defense, detailing the research, results, and recommendations from a year-long review of data, studies, programs, and discussions with Service Members, their families, and their caregivers. The intent of this report is to provide the Secretary of Defense and DoD leadership with actionable and measurable recommendations for policy and programs designed to prevent suicide by members of the Armed Forces.

The Task Force used five main data sources in the creation of the report (a compilation of each is located in the appendices):
 Review of existing scientific literature
 Presentations from subject matter experts
 Public information (including participation from family members of suicide victims)
 Panel discussions (including suicide attempt survivors)
 Information gathered from eyes-on field visits to military installations.
In case you didn't notice, they become veterans carrying the burden of their service, so when you fail them during their service, you have already failed them as veterans. Oh, sorry almost forgot to mention that when you start wars and send them into harms way, you have created more veterans needing the care they were promised. Guess you forgot to mention to them that care depended on what you could get away with ignoring and how fast you could insult that service by sending veterans into a civilian system you also complain about.

The evidence is clear. The outcome is due to your extreme ignorance or ambivalence to your own history,

I am sure you noticed all the protests against what you have "accomplished" thus far.

Suicides went up. Awareness is a slogan, not a solution. Stop repeating what already failed and start demanding accountability in your own house!

A Vietnam Hero Finds the Real War Is on the Home Front
PEOPLE
BY DAVID CHRISTIAN

POSTED ON SEPTEMBER 14, 1981

With his blond hair and blue-eyed good looks, David Christian could pass for a movie war hero sent up by central casting. In real life Christian was barely 18 when be became the youngest second lieutenant ever to graduate from the Army’s Officer Candidate School. During an eight-month tour in Vietnam he collected two Congressional Medal of Honor nominations, seven Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars, two Silver Stars, a Distinguished Service Cross, two Vietnamese Crosses of Galantry and a chestful of other medals. Disabled by napalm burns in 1968, be left the military at 21 and became the Army’s youngest retired captain. Christian’s fighting didn’t stop on the battlefield, however; finding a war-weary and often hostile public back borne, be launched a campaign for veterans’ rights and a barrage of criticism at government policy toward returning GIs. Now 32, be lives in Washington Crossing, Pa., with Peggy, his wife of 14 years, and three children. Last month Christian declined the No. 2 position in the VA to continue as executive director of the United Viet Nam Organization, which be started in 1978. He talked to PEOPLE’s Margot Achterberg about his fights at the front and at home.read more here

Research Project - Active military, reservists, guardsmen and veterans needed – If you or someone you know has experience overseas, a research project is ongoing at the UCF RESTORES lab at the University of Central Florida.  The project determines if smells influence their experience in virtual environments similar to those we use in the treatment of combat-related PTSD. Participation takes approximately one hour, and those who volunteer will be compensated for their time.  You can help others who suffer from PTS by your participation.  Call UCF RESTORES:  407-823-3910.

Suggested delayed New Year’s Resolutions for everyone:     (V) – Specifically pertaining to veterans
  • If you moved within/to Florida and bought a home, have you filed for your 2017 Homestead Property Tax Exemption?  Deadline of March 1 at your county office or online.
  • Review other Property Tax Exemptions on your county Property Appraiser’s website.  There have been changes – ie:  new senior citizen exemption (Amendment 5); (V) deployed military; service connected disabled, etc.
  • (V) Enroll in the VA healthcare system, if not enrolled already.  Benefits change over time.  If a service related condition arises, then you will already be “in the system.”  If you have private insurance, enrollment will empower you a choice of how/where to seek treatment.
  • (V) Get a copy of your DD214 (aka: discharge papers), Service Medical Records, and Awards records.  These may take several months to receive.  Get them before you really need them.  Make several copies and keep the original in a very safe place, with at least one copy NOT at your home.
  • Join a military/veterans organization and pledge at least four or four additional hour a month in service to veterans in our communities.  (USO volunteers at OIA provide four hours.)
  • Get tested for Hepatitis C.  If positive, get treated.  (V) - The VA will test you, and treat you.  Consult your primary care team.  One in 10 Vietnam veterans, and one in 30 baby-boomers, will test positive for this liver problem “time-bomb.”  Blood Banks already test for this – if Hep C negative, your blood will help save a life.  (FYI – Hepatitis C was formerly known as Hepatitis Non-A, Non-B until the 1980’s.)
  • (V) Get your Florida Driver’s license reprinted with the “Veteran” designation. Take your DD214 (discharge papers) to the Driver’s License Branch and it will be reprinted and laminated for a couple dollars.  Restaurants and other businesses may offer discounts for veterans.  Set aside those savings for a veteran’s charity donation.

Volunteering - Would you have liked to be able to help senior veterans, active military and veteran families after the hurricane?  You still can, and it doesn’t require damage from hurricanes.

Mentors needed - Veteran Courts ARE succeeding!  Longer term success is possible with community mentors and there are mentoring programs in Orange, Seminole and Osceola Counties.  Be a “battle buddy” or “foxhole buddy” by assisting someone with life challenges.  No proselytizing – just non-judgmental caring.  Most of the offenders are DUI or possession, or PTS anger issues that are being rechanneled.  If you have experienced substance abuse – although not required - and came thru it, you may be very helpful to someone else.  If you are interested in participating as a mentor, know someone who is interested, or are a part of an organization where Mentors can be recruited, contact your local Veterans Court resource.

Life can be challenging…especially after the holidays when the bills come in….

Prince Harry Opens Up About Stress of His Afghanistan War Service as He Visits Ambulance Crews
PEOPLE.com
BY SIMON PERRY
UPDATED FEBRUARY 2, 2017
“We’re all human, we’re not machines, despite a lot of people in certain jobs having to think and behave like machines in order to get the best out of you – I accept that – but it’s not weakness, it’s strength to be able to come forward, deal with it, move on and be a better person.” Prince Harry
Prince Harry spoke about the mental health challenges he faced while serving in Afghanistan as he met ambulance crews in London.

Recalling his days flying helicopters on his second tour, he said, “You land and then hand them over and then are radioed to do something else. You never find out how that guy or girl recovered, whether they did recover or they didn’t.”

Army Husband Welcomes Wife Home in Style

Man’s re-engagement to Army wife tops off return ceremony
Kentucky News
JESSE JONES

February 1, 2017 Fort Campbell welcomed 332 soldiers home from deployment Wednesday night into Thursday morning at its airbase.

But Willie Sanders only had eyes for one.
After letting their children embrace his wife for a tearful moment, Sanders got down on one knee and asked Maj. Ireka Sanders to marry him — again.

“The first time I was in college, I was 24, didn’t have a lot of money, financial aid, oodles and noodles, that’s all I was good enough for,” Willie said. “But now I think I did a pretty good job.”

Because he was poor when he first decided to propose, he could only afford a “bubble gum” ring. The pair also decided to get tattoos to mark the occasion around their left hand ring fingers.
