NAVARRE — The first premonition Ken Colin had of the grief he would soon face was when his four dogs began howling at the window of his home Wednesday night.

He said when he looked out he saw an Army sergeant and a chaplain standing near the doorway.

“I knew exactly what they were here for,” he said. “Our lives just came crashing down on us.”

The men had come to tell him and his wife, Kathy, that their 22-year-old son, Army Pfc. Matthew Colin, had been killed by a roadside bomb while patrolling in Kandahar province in Afghanistan earlier last week.

Matthew Colin had enlisted in the Army just a year and a half before his death.

“Matt loved being in the military,” Ken Colin said at his home in Navarre on Saturday afternoon.

“God placed certain people on this earth to be soldiers, to be warriors, and my son just happened to be one of them.”

Fort Wainwright buried toxic waste cleaned up during construction for housing

Toxic waste cleaned up at Army housing project

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Toxic waste discovered during the construction of housing at Fort Wainwright has been cleaned up.

The discovery of the buried toxic waste in 2005 delayed the completion of the 55-unit development known as Taku Gardens at the Fairbanks base. It also delayed occupation of the housing. The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner says the housing now is slated to open October 2012.

Joe Malen, the Army’s cleanup manager, said at a town hall Tuesday that the top level of soil is now considered safe. But tenants will not be able to dig wells or garden without using raised beds because of contamination deep in the soil.

The cleanup of Taku Gardens cost more than $21 million. The Army used the area as a dumping ground in the 1940s and 1950s.

Fort Wainwright Family housing is toxic dump site

Army Knew Alaska Base Family Housing Site was Toxic
Carol Goldberg

Public Employees for Environmenal Responsibility

Jul 09, 2008

July 7, 2008, Washington, DC - The U.S. Army knew that the site chosen to build a family housing complex at Fort Wainwright was a toxic dump but proceeded anyway, in violation of federal laws and service policies, according to an audit by the Army’s own Office of Staff Judge Advocate that was released today by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER). Despite creating a hugely expensive debacle, sickening workers, spreading pollution and retaliating against whistleblowers, the base command has absolved itself and issued an "outstanding" rating to the official who green-lighted the project.

The January 2007 Army audit questioned "the wisdom of building a family housing complex on top of a known 1950s-era military landfill" and concluded that "the situation with the Taku construction project is the direct result of multiple individuals failing to adhere to Army and federal regulations and guidance."

Nonetheless, the Army command excused the failures at Fort Wainwright by issuing a report just six months later which dismissed any major concerns but skipped over most of the audit findings, including –

Construction workers became ill at both Taku Gardens and another toxic hotspot because the projects were not slowed to properly analyze the sites. As with the illnesses, worker safety in digging through unexploded ordnance was dismissed with one base official stating "if a bulldozer did encounter a live artillery shell, it would simply scare the driver."

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — A 22-year-old Fairbanks soldier has been charged with assaulting his wife and a commanding officer.

Alaska State Troopers say Bronson Patrick Bourg of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team at Fort Wainwright was charged Friday with assault and resisting arrest.

Troopers say Bourg and his wife had been drinking at a bar and that he assaulted her in their vehicle and caused her to drive off the road.

Her father and brother took the couple home, and troopers say Bourg beat and choked the woman again.

She called his military squad leader, who called troopers.

Troopers say Bourg assaulted the Army officer and the arresting officers as he was taken into custody.
