“This morning we had a group of soldiers out here swimming, and at about 12:20 p.m. they called and advised us that one (person) had gone under and they couldn’t find him,” Adams said.

He said other members with the group tried to rescue the soldier before authorities were called to the scene. “There was a group of swimmers with him and immediately when he went under they attempted to rescue him and could not,” Adams said. “So it was a recovery for us by the time we got here.”

Three Tour Iraq Veteran Marine's body found in Lake Isabella

Family remembers veteran as drowning investigation continues
KGET News
June 21, 2013

BAKERSFIELD, CA - The family of a local veteran who served three tours of duty in Iraq is awaiting the results of his autopsy after crews recovered his body from Lake Isabella, three days after he went missing. The sheriff's department is in the midst of a drowning death investigation and an autopsy is scheduled Friday to determine how the former marine died while kayaking at Lake Isabella.

Meanwhile, his family celebrated what would've been his 30th birthday Thursday by remembering good times with him. Family members gathered at Michael May's foster parents' home to remember the local veteran. This, just hours after the coroner identified May's body, pulled from Lake Isabella after he went missing on Father's Day.

May's foster mother Rosaura Hernandez said, "We got peace, in the sense that if he was dead, we wanted to know. If he was alive, we wanted to know because it was four days of agony and so that was very hard."

What went wrong at military’s ‘Super Pond’ in Maryland?

What went wrong at military’s ‘Super Pond’ in Maryland?
By Justin George
The Baltimore Sun
Published: March 6, 2013

BALTIMORE — Shaped like a teardrop and carved out of the eastern bank of the Bush River in Maryland, the UNDEX Test Facility at Aberdeen Proving Ground has earned the nickname “Super Pond” for its unusual properties.

Viewed from above, the man-made pond looks much darker than the nearby waters of the Chesapeake Bay. That’s because it drops 150 feet to a flat bottom, where, out of view of the public, the military tests missiles, torpedoes, sonar and the effects of explosions on submarines and boats — all within walls that can withstand the equivalent of 4,100 pounds of TNT.

It’s also where Navy divers practice salvage missions. When the military isn’t blowing things up in the Super Pond, it offers a controlled and easy-to-monitor environment, away from the unpredictability of nature’s choppy waves and ever-shifting conditions.

“Until recently,” said Maj. Gen. Genaro J. Dellarocco, chief of the Army Test and Evaluation Command, “it was one of the safest facilities we had on the installation.

“We’re investigating with the Navy to find out what changed.”

On Feb. 26, rescue workers pulled two members of the Navy’s elite Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit 2 from the Super Pond.

Diver First Class James Reyher, 28, and Diver Second Class Ryan Harris, 23 — whose unit has been involved in high-profile missions such as the recovery of the space shuttle Challenger — had been participating in a training exercise at the facility. They were reportedly using air hoses supplied from the surface, and were tethered together.

One was dead at the scene; the other was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. They were the second and third divers to die at the Super Pond in less than a month.

by William Cole

The Navy identified the SEAL commando who was lost at sea last week during training off Kaena Point as Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Matthew John Leathers of Woodland, Calif.

The Coast Guard said it suspended its search for Leathers Sunday after "exhaustive efforts" to locate the 33-year-old, who went missing during an open-ocean training exercise last Tuesday.

Coast Guard, Navy and Marine Corps crews worked with Honolulu Fire Department and Ocean Safety to search an area covering more than 24,000 square miles using aircraft, cutters, small boats and shore personnel.

"In this case, I have the heartbreak of informing not only the family, but a close-knit military community, that a loved one could not be found," Capt. Joanna Nunan, commanding officer of Coast Guard Sector Honolulu, said Sunday in a news release.

Army officials on Friday released the name of a Fort Bliss soldier who died Saturday in Corsicana, Texas, after sustaining neck injuries from diving into a pond.

Spc. Mason T. Moore III, 27, of Frost, just before midnight dove into a shallow area of a pond near his mother's house in Corsicana, and did not resurface, said Maj. Jennifer R. Butler with the 11th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade Public Affairs Office.

Moore's brother pulled him out of the water about 10 minutes later and attempted to administer CPR before paramedics arrived, Butler said.

Emergency responders took Moore to Navarro Regional Hospital in Corsicana where he was pronounced dead, Butler said. Moore is survived by his wife and son.

A unit memorial service will take place on Fort Bliss at an undetermined date.

"Charlie Company, 86th Expeditionary Signal Battalion, suffered a tremendous loss," Capt. Lorenzo J. Aponte, Charlie Company commander at Fort Bliss, said in a statement. "Spc. Moore was remarkable in so many ways. He lived his life to the fullest and touched so many people during his time with us. We all have memories that defined Spc. Moore; memories that we will always hold dear. We continue to keep him and his family in our thoughts and prayers."

Marine family needs help now

Today the Marines do what they do best. They are fighting for the sake of one of their own. Cpl. Byler lost his daughter and needs help to pay for medical costs as well as the funeral. Too many people assume Reservists have coverage but they do not when they are not deployed. This family had nothing to help them as they watched their baby die. Top that off with they waited for doctors to come so her organs could be donated to help another family. Now while they should be grieving the loss of their daughter, since that is enough heartache, they have to worry about how to pay for all of it.

So the Marines decided to do something about it. Yesterday was Adalynn's funeral and today they washed cars to help the family.

The sad news came and our hearts are broken for this family.
Oviedo Marine Mourns loss of baby
Adalynn Byler was pronounced on Monday evening and was on support in order to allow organ transplant teams to be set up. Her family was very generous in allowing other families to have their prayers/wishes/dreams answered. There are three lives whose futures changed on Tuesday by the forward and outward thinking of the Byler family.

The family had no means to pay for the upcoming funeral expenses and hospital bill. They were in the process of getting medical coverage when this occurred and unfortunately none of this will be covered. As a reservist, the family receives no medical insurance.

The Florida Department of American Legion generously made provisions for funeral expenses. A memorial fund has been set up help with the medical costs, requested in lieu of flowers.

The Navy Federal Credit Union will receive donations for the Adalynn Byler Memorial Fund. If mailed:

Oviedo Marine mourns death of baby girl and needs help

A few days ago I received an email about this family. They have been in the prayers of many people since this happened.
The local Marine family in distress is Cpl. Adam and Morgan Byler. Adam serves as a Marine Corps Reservist from the local Reserve Center and returned from deployment in Afghanistan in February. They have two children who were being given a bath on Friday by the father. He left the bathroom for only moments and returned to find 16 month old daughter, Adalynn, underwater. Despite medical efforts, there is no brain activity and removal from life support equipment is imminent. The family has no means to pay for the upcoming funeral expenses and hospital bill. They were in the process of getting medical coverage when this occurred and unfortunately none of this will be covered. As a reservist, the family receives no medical insurance.

Adam works as an armed security guard but his incredible feelings of guilt resulted in weapons being removed from the home and thus, his job situation is now unknown. The Orange County Sheriffs department investigations found nothing suspicious and this incident is declared a very tragic accident.

I have been in near constant contact with Cpl. Byler's superior officer - 1stSgt Doug Hester. The Marines of 6th Motors, most of whom have been at the hospital with Adam and Morgan, are requesting any donation that may help offset these forthcoming costs. There will be a memorial fund to be set up soon to receive funds.

Any assistance would be greatly welcomed by the Reservist families and the Byler family. Those of you who remember and helped with the homecoming of 47 Marines arriving on 2 buses in February, Cpl. Byler was in the group. That was when we got to see him hold Adalynn for the first time, as she was born while he was on deployment in Afghanistan.

The sad news came and our hearts are broken for this family.

Cpl. Adam Byler serves as a Marine Corps Reservist from the local Reserve Center in Orlando, 6th Motor Transport Battalion, 4th Marine Logistics Group. While on deployment the group transported supplies, equipment and personnel, under constant threat of attack and Improvised Explosive Devices (IED's). In February, after seven months in Afghanistan, a total of 47 area Marines returned at the same time, and wife, Morgan, 3 year old son Jaden, and baby Adalynn were anxiously awaiting the return. Because she was born while he was on deployment, it was the first time that Cpl. Byler got to hold his daughter.

Your support is a blessing for the Byler family as they attempt to heal from this horrible tragedy.

Toddler drowns in bathtub
Updated: Thursday, 15 Dec 2011

OVIEDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - During the time that Marine Cpl. Adam Byler spent his 8 months in Afghanistan, his little girl, Adalynn, was born. When he recently came back home, it was love at first sight.

"First time I saw her? When I got back from deployment, and she really changed my life. She was so special," he said.

But their time together was cut short. Adam, 22, was bathing both his daughter and son, when he briefly stepped away from the tub. When he came back, his 15-month-old daughter was underwater.

Sgt. Jack Sutter was her Godfather. He told us that she needed to be transported to two different hospitals. After a 4-day stay in the hospital, Adam's precious little girl lost her life.

"We don't know if all the medical costs will be covered," said Sutter, "as well as the funeral as well."

Body found in Merrimack River identified as Lowell police officer
July 24, 2011 8:12 PM

“He was there to take care of people,” his mother said. “Whether it was on the police force or in Iraq or where he was going in Afghanistan, he believed what he was doing was helping people.”

By Stewart Bishop, Globe Correspondent

Two men were killed -- one of them a decorated Lowell police officer and former Marine -- in separate incidents in two Massachusetts rivers during the weekend, authorities said.

While riding in a motor boat with his brother and another friend on the Merrimack River Saturday evening, Lowell patrol officer Charles Panek told his companions he was going to jump into the water and asked them to turn around and pick him up, according to Tyngsborough police.

He jumped off while the 18-foot vessel was traveling about 20 miles per hour, police said. When the boat circled back seconds later, he did not surface.

According to the Lowell police department and family members, Panek was a decorated police officer and former Marine, who had served in the Iraq War. He also served in the Rhode Island Army National Guard, and was scheduled to be deployed soon to Afghanistan, police said.

NEW PHILADELPHIA —
Steven E. Sickels, 57, of New Philadelphia, has been identified as the man whose body was found Thursday in the Tuscarawas River, according to Tuscarawas County Sheriff Walt Wilson.

An autopsy was performed by the Stark County Coroner’s Office on Friday and no evidence of trauma or foul play was found, Wilson said, adding he is awaiting toxicology results from the lab, which are expected in a couple of months. Tattoos and clothing were used to confirm Sickels’ identity.

Sickels reportedly had been depressed over the death of his son, Marine Cpl. Shawn Sickels, 22, of New Philadelphia, who was found dead in his barracks in Camp Lejeune, N.C., on March 30.

Concerned family members had called New Philadelphia police Thursday afternoon. At 1:36 p.m., his longtime girlfriend said he had been missing since 4 p.m. Tuesday, when he was last seen leaving the residence. She said he had medical issues, but all of his medications were at the residence.
