Gray was a veteran of the Vietnam War. After fighting overseas, he battled cancer and won. It was enough of a motivation for Gray to rejoin the military, serving the combat zone during the Iraq War.
TACOMA, Wash. -- A Vietnam and Iraq War veteran from Spanaway died Thursday following a crash with two cars that police say were street racing.

Rollin Gray, 61, died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma on Thursday after being taken there following the Tuesday night accident.

Pierce County sheriff's deputies say Gray was traveling eastbound on 182st East in Spanaway when two cars came over the horizon at a high rate of speed in the opposite direction.

Deputies say a red 2004 Dodge Stratus, driven by a 16-year-old boy from Spanaway with only a learner's permit, was racing with a black 2004 Acura TSX driven by an 18-year-old man from Spanaway.

"They have taken a man's life who did nothing but give to this country, give to his community, raise a family," said Saxton. "He still has a son who's not even out of high school yet, I believe he's 15-years-old, he's his namesake and now he's left without a father."

Fort Bragg Command Sgt. Major Killed Riding Harley

Fatal collision of two lives leaves a community in mourning
Fayetteville Observer
By Greg Barnes, Staff writer
January 25, 2016

Fort Bragg Command Sgt. Maj. Lynn Edward Ratley had been around the world, leading soldiers and helping people in need.
He had worked at medical centers in Germany and Afghanistan, served as chief clinical sergeant major at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and, most recently, commanded troops with Fort Bragg's 261st Multifunctional Medical Battalion.

Justin Andrew Dunlap hadn't been much of anywhere, save for a stretch in a South Carolina prison.

The paths of the 47-year-old military leader and the 26-year-old convicted sex offender crossed eight days ago, in a screeching tangle of rubber and steel near the intersection of West Mountain Drive and Gillespie Street.

Fayetteville police say Dunlap's black 2000 Honda Accord was traveling south on Gillespie Street when it crossed a grassy center median, veered into oncoming traffic and smashed into Ratley's 2015 Harley Davidson motorcycle.

They'd been raised in church, but in 2015 he'd grown closer to God, she said. He was an officer in a Christian motorcycle group.
On the morning of New Year's Eve, Iraq war veteran Matthew DeRemer went on Facebook to reflect on a difficult 2015 and outlined his plan to become a better man in the coming year.

The decorated former Marine corporal from St. Petersburg, Florida, had a new job, stronger faith and a renewed drive to help people.

"My goal this year, while battling all obstacles, is to redefine my life by living as selfless as possible," DeRemer, 31, wrote.

Last day of 2015!!!! For me I'll be meditating through all I do, on this entire year. I've lost, I've gained, family is closer and tougher than ever before, loved ones lost, and new friends found. There has been many times where I've been found on my knees in prayer for hours (relentless) and other times leading a group of people in prayer, my faith (that I love to share) is an everyday awakening (to me) that people, lives, and circumstances can change for the better OVER TIME. I look back at 2015's huge challenges that I've overcome, shared with others, and have once again found myself... To say thank you and BRING ON 2016, much works to be done!

And I really don't know where I'll end up tonight but I do know where I windup is where I'm meant to be.

I sincerely doubt God's plan for this veteran was to be hit by someone and left for dead. Seems more like an amazing person left this life because someone didn't care what else he could have done.

Missing In American Lost Another Veteran Escorting Remains

Crash kills motorcyclist escorting veteran's body, hurt 3
Des Moines Register

September 27, 2015
One motorcyclist died and three others were injured Saturday in Iowa when a car crashed into motorcyclists escorting the body of a veteran killed in a similar accident earlier this month.

The crash happened about 1 p.m. on Interstate Highway 80, near Atlantic, when nearly 125 motorcyclists and other vehicles were escorting veteran Bill Henry's cremated remains home to Omaha from the Freedom Rock landmark in western Iowa.

The Iowa State Patrol said Donald Kerby, 81, of Des Moines struck a motorcycle when he changed lanes to avoid a trailer parked on the road's shoulder. Ryan Lossing, 38, of Omaha died, and three other riders were hurt.

Henry was killed after a similar crash near Manassas, Va., earlier this month. The 69-year-old Army veteran died Sept. 14, two weeks after suffering head injuries from a crash that happened as he helped escort six West Coast veterans' remains to Arlington National Cemetery for burial.

Henry co-founded and helped lead the Nebraska chapter of the Missing in America Project, which works with funeral homes to return unclaimed remains of veterans to family members and arrange for military burials.

"It's a tragedy. They (Henry and Lossing) both went before their time," said Larry Schaber, a friend of Henry's who co-founded Nebraska's Missing in America Project chapter with him.

Missing In America's Bill Henry Killed in Motorcycle Crash

Motorcycle crash kills advocate for Nebraska veterans
LINCOLN JOURNAL STAR
By ZACH PLUHACEK

Bill Henry, an Army paratrooper during the Vietnam War who became an advocate for Nebraska veterans, died Monday of injuries suffered in an Aug. 30 motorcycle crash in Virginia.

This spring, Henry lobbied the Nebraska Legislature to enact a bill making it easier for funeral homes to turn over the unclaimed cremains of veterans to groups like Missing in America Project, which has a Nebraska chapter co-founded by Henry. The legislation passed without opposition.

Henry, 69, also assisted the Department of Veterans Affairs and Heroes of the Heartland Foundation to help veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, something he struggled with himself following three tours in Vietnam.

"He had control of his demons, and he was there to help the other soldiers," said Larry Schaber, a friend and co-founder of the Nebraska Missing in America Project chapter.

The day of the crash, Henry was part of a convoy escorting six veterans' cremains from California to be interred at Arlington National Cemetery. Henry stopped to take a picture, hopped back on his 2010 Victory Cross Country and tried to catch up.

American Legion Riders Escort One of Their Own

Man who honored deceased veterans is buried with a tribute of his own
The New Mexican

Sep 12, 2015
Looking over the large assembly, the Rev. Franklin Pretto-Ferro said, “Ernie had such a sense of humor that if he saw this many people gathered for the service, he would say, ‘You better take up a collection.’ ”
After serving in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam, Edwin “Ernie” Durr dedicated much of his life to helping other veterans. The Santa Fe native served in various veterans organizations. But he took special pride in honoring veterans who passed away, serving in funeral details up to five days a week and at times presenting the flag to the loved ones left behind.

On Sept. 3, Durr, 67, was returning with a detail from a veteran’s funeral when he died after losing control of his motorcycle on Interstate 25. A week later, hundreds of people, including a number of military veterans, showed up to say goodbye to him.

“He loved escorting service members who had passed away,” said Kenny “Scooter” Keelin, who, like Durr, was a member of the state-chartered American Legion Riders, a veterans group that provides motorcycle escorts for military funeral processions. “It meant almost the world to him.”

Keelin said Durr’s road name was “Oops,” so chosen after Durr led fellow Legion Riders down the wrong road during a funeral escort.

"He loved being a Marine. He loved riding his motorcycle. He loved his family, and he loved people," the elder Haggarty said. "He died doing what he loved, being who he was."
SALT LAKE CITY — Sean Haggarty knew there was always a chance his son, by virtue of enlisting as a U.S. Marine, could die at a young age.

But after his 20-year-old boy died unexpectedly in a motorcycle crash at Camp Pendleton in San Diego this week, Haggarty says he is no more equipped than any grieving parent to describe the overpowering heartbreak of losing a child.

"There are no words to explain the loss we've got," Haggarty said. "There are no words to explain the pain."

Sean Thomas Haggarty, who has the same first and last name as his father, was killed on base Monday in the crash, his father said. The elder Haggarty was notified by Marines at his home around midnight that night. The days since have been filled with family members clinging to memories and each other for consolation.

"We sit there, and we cry, we laugh, and remember (Sean)," his father said.
