An Air Force veteran and two of his five children died over the weekend after apparently getting lost while hiking on a desolate Missouri hiking trail amid unexpected low temperatures, officials said Monday.

36-year-old David Decareaux and his 8- and 10-year-old sons were found Sunday, a day after they ventured out with their 4-month-old yellow Labrador retriever on the Ozark Trail, about 110 miles southwest of St. Louis, Reynolds County Sheriff Tom Volner said.

Decareaux died at the scene, and the boys were declared dead at a hospital after hours of efforts to revive them failed, the sheriff said. Volner said authorities believe the three died of exposure to the elements, though autopsies were planned.

The dog was found near the victims and survived.

DECKERS, Colo. — A search is underway for a Fort Carson soldier and his girlfriend who failed to return from a day hike in the mountains of the Pike National Forest over the weekend.

The pair were expected to return Saturday night from their trip about 45 miles southwest of Denver, but they haven’t been seen. Their names haven’t been released.

Jefferson County authorities say the soldier was not facing deployment, and they have no reason to believe he and the woman were running away.

About 160 searchers from Summit, Arapahoe and Douglas counties and Fort Carson are looking for the missing persons, along with two helicopters and two fixed-wing planes.

DECKERS, Colo. — A Fort Carson soldier and his girlfriend missing since Saturday night have been found following a massive search in the Pike National Forest.

The pair hiked out of the forest and were in a store Monday afternoon in the town of Jefferson, some 15 to 20 miles from where they parked their car.

The pair was reported missing after they failed to return from their day hike about 45 miles southwest of Denver. Their names haven’t been released.

Jefferson County authorities say the two were in an area hit by storms, including some that produced hail, over the weekend. About 160 people, along with two helicopters and two fixed-wing planes, participated in the search.
