Obama orders "all appropriate measures" to increase security
Romulus, Michigan (CNN) -- A Nigerian man is "talking a lot" to the FBI, said a senior U.S. official, after what the United States believes was an attempted terrorist attack on an inbound international flight.

The initial impression is that the suspect was acting alone and did not have any formal connections to organized terrorist groups, said the official, who is familiar with the investigation.

The suspect, identified by a U.S. government official as 23-year-old Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, ignited a small explosive device Friday, shortly before a Northwest flight from Amsterdam, Netherlands, landed at Detroit Metro Airport in Michigan.

Passenger Jasper Schuringa told CNN that with the aid of the cabin crew, he helped subdue and isolate Abdulmutallab.

Blame game erupts over probe of Hood suspect

By Devlin Barrett - The Associated Press
Posted : Wednesday Nov 11, 2009 8:19:56 EST

WASHINGTON — Finger-pointing erupted between federal agencies Tuesday over Fort Hood shooting suspect Nidal Hasan. Government officials said a Defense Department terrorism investigator looked into Hasan’s contacts with a radical imam months ago, but a military official denied prior knowledge of the Army psychiatrist’s contacts with any Muslim extremists.

The two government officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case on the record, said the Washington-based joint terrorism task force overseen by the FBI was notified of communications between Hasan and a radical imam overseas, and the information was turned over to a Defense Criminal Investigative Service employee assigned to the task force. The communications were gathered by investigators beginning in December 2008 and continuing into early this year.

MORROW, Ga. -- The FBI is investigating the beating of an African-American woman by a white man at a Cracker Barrel restaurant as a possible hate crime.

Morrow police said they arrested Troy Dale West, of Poulan, Ga. after he attacked Tasha Hill after she asked him to "be careful" at a Cracker Barrel restaurant.

Morrow police were called to the Cracker Barrel restaurant on Southlake Plaza Drive in Morrow Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers said they located the female victim and called for EMTs and Fire Department officials to assist. At the same time, the alleged offender in the case, Troy West, was detained at the scene, police said.

Police said an investigation revealed that the female victim, identified as Tasha Hill, was entering the Cracker Barrel with her 7-year-old daughter as West was leaving the restaurant. As West was leaving, the exit door came close to striking the 7-year-old daughter of the victim, police said. Hill, by all witness accounts, politely asked West to be careful, officials said.

Feds probe attack on reservist as hate crime

By Dorie Turner - The Associated Press
Posted : Wednesday Sep 16, 2009 13:02:02 EDT

ATLANTA — The beating of a black female Army reservist outside a Georgia restaurant is being investigated as a possible hate crime, federal authorities said Wednesday.

Tashawnea Hill was kicked and punched by a white man Sept. 9 as he screamed racial slurs outside a Cracker Barrell in Morrow, about 15 miles southeast of Atlanta, police said. Troy D. West, 47, became enraged when Hill told him to be careful after he nearly hit her 7-year-old daughter while opening the restaurant’s door, police said.

FBI spokesman Stephen Emmett said the Justice Department’s civil rights division has initiated a probe into the incident.

Hill, who was taken to the hospital after the incident, said Wednesday that she is still in shock.

“I haven’t been able to sleep since then,” she said in a telephone interview on the way to the doctor’s office. “My major concern is that my daughter is OK. Mommy will heal up. Mommy will get better, but she’s the future.”

Man Accused Of Killing Wife During Mexico Cruise
Medical Examiner Identifies Victim As Shirley McGill, 55

POSTED: 9:26 am PDT July 16, 2009

SAN DIEGO -- A 55-year-old woman died aboard a cruise ship that docked in San Diego Thursday, and her husband was arrested in connection with the death, according to the FBI.

FBI Special Agent Darrell Foxworth said the 2,052-passenger Carnival Elation was on the last leg of a five-day trip to Baja Mexico on Tuesday when members of the ship's crew responded to a domestic dispute between a husband and wife in their cabin.

The crew members entered the cabin and found the woman dead, Foxworth said.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Shirley McGill of Winnetka, a city in Los Angeles County. She turned 55 on July 8.

Robert McGill, who is also in his mid 50s, was held in the ship's brig during the return trip to San Diego and is expected to be charged with murder, FBI Special Agent in Charge Keith Slotter said during a midday news briefing at B Street Pier.

Recruiting center shooting suspect had other targets

New info released on recruiting center suspect

By Chuck Bartels - The Associated Press
Posted : Wednesday Jun 3, 2009 14:27:26 EDT

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A Muslim convert accused of killing a soldier outside a recruiting center may have been considering other targets including Jewish and Christian sites — and had the firepower to carry out more attacks, according to law enforcement officials.

A joint FBI-Homeland Security intelligence assessment obtained by The Associated Press said officers found maps to Jewish organizations, a child-care center, a Baptist church, a post office and military recruiting centers in the southeastern U.S. and New York and Philadelphia.

“Out of an abundance of caution, and in light of newly discovered information, the FBI cannot rule out additional subjects, targets, or the potential for inspired copycats who might act out in support of the original act,” the intelligence assessment said.

Abdulhakim Muhammad, 23, of Little Rock had targeted soldiers “because of what they had done to Muslims in the past,” authorities said, saying he had said he wanted to “kill as many people in the Army as he could.”

Gunman blocks back door, opens fire at offices in Binghamton, N.Y.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Twelve to 13 people were killed Friday when a gunman walked into an immigrant services center and opened fire, Gov. David Paterson said.
A federal law enforcement official said the suspected gunman was found dead in the building. The man carried identification with the name of 42-year-old Jiverly Voong of nearby Johnson City, N.Y., a law enforcement official said.
"I speak for all of New York when I offer my prayers for the victims and families of this tragedy," Paterson said hours after the gunman shot several people and took dozens hostage. The gunman first blocked the back door with his car, authorities said.
Two people were seen in handcuffs as they left the building, but NBC's Pete Williams said they were not suspects and that police were simply taking extra precautions as people left the building.

Long Island Rail Road Retirement board search by federal agents

Agents Raid Office in L.I.R.R. Disability Inquiry

By WALT BOGDANICH and DUFF WILSON
Published: September 23, 2008
Federal agents raided the Long Island office of the federal Railroad Retirement Board on Tuesday amid an intensifying investigation into the legitimacy of disability payments to thousands of former employees — including white-collar managers — of the Long Island Rail Road.

As former rail workers were arriving to file new disability claims, investigators showed up and closed the office in Westbury, eventually carting out nine file boxes and five personal computers.

The raid came two days after The New York Times reported that nearly all career employees of the railroad — from 93 percent to 97 percent of retirees every year since 2000 — retire early and soon after begin getting disability payments from the federal agency. The retirement board almost never turns down a claim, and since 2000 has paid more than a quarter of a billion dollars in disability checks to former Long Island Rail Road workers, The Times found.

Responding to the findings, Gov. David A. Paterson immediately directed the state attorney general to begin a wide-ranging inquiry into disability claims at the railroad. On Tuesday, he called on Congress to aid in that investigation.

The raid, part of a separate federal inquiry, was led by investigators for the retirement board’s inspector general, joined by agents for the F.B.I.

And after the disclosure that dozens of the railroad retirees have been enjoying free golf on state-owned courses, state parks officials have also begun a review of who gets an Access Pass, which gives the disabled free use of sports facilities in state parks.

Martin J. Dickman, the retirement board’s inspector general in Chicago, declined to comment on the raid, except to say, “We’re investigating.”

The retirement board is run by three presidential appointees, one representing labor, one representing management and one representing consumers.

Sheriff calls on Brinkley to surrender to authorities

Sheriff calls on Brinkley to surrender to authorities

By Nathan Key, nathankey@newstopic.net

Monday, September 22, 2008 9:37 PM EDT
The search for a man wanted in the murder of one Caldwell County Sheriff's deputy and the attempted murder of another continues with two law enforcement agencies stepping forward with offers of rewards.

The U.S. Marshal's Office and FBI each have offered $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of 32-year-old Skip Brinkley, also known as Larry Wayne Brucke Jr.

A manhunt has been ongoing since Friday night when Brinkley allegedly shot and killed Sheriff's Deputy Adam Klutz when he responded to a 911 hang-up call for a suspected domestic violence dispute at 3940 Fox Winkler Road in the Oak Hill community. Klutz was struck in a non-protected area of his body and pronounced dead at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.

Lt. Chris Martin also was shot three times in the chest when he arrived at the scene to provide backup, but his life was saved because of the bulletproof vest he was wearing. Martin returned fire, but there is nothing to indicate that he struck Brinkley.

UC Santa Cruz biologists targets of fire bombs

Santa Cruz firebombs look familiar
Wyatt Buchananand Demian Bulwa, Chronicle Staff Writers
Monday, August 4, 2008

(08-04) 04:00 PDT Santa Cruz -- The devices used in two firebombings targeting UC Santa Cruz biologists are similar to some used in the past by animal rights activists, investigators said Sunday.

The bombs were so powerful they were like "Molotov cocktails on steroids," said Santa Cruz police Capt. Steve Clark.

One struck the home of assistant biology Professor David Feldheim on Saturday morning, forcing him to flee with his family. The other exploded just a few minutes earlier, gutting a car parked outside the campus home of a second researcher.

Later, Santa Cruz County sheriff's deputies went to the home of a third researcher who received a threatening telephone message, but officers found no explosives.

More than 50 investigators, including some from the FBI's regional terrorism task force, are looking into the attacks.

Feldheim, whose townhouse was firebombed just after 5:30 a.m., uses mice in laboratory research on brain formation.

He told The Chronicle that he and his wife, along with their 7-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter, had to drop a ladder from the window of a second-floor bedroom to escape after smoke filled the home's first floor.

Suspected in anthrax attack commits suicide

Too many things in this article are very troubling. The first is that "that has been investigating the anthrax mailings for more than a year" but has not said why it was never an important enough investigation to have been non-stop since 2001.

It took them all this time to exonerate Steven Hatfill who had this hanging over his head for seven years. The good thing is that they had to pay for what they did to him all this time.

The government paid Hatfill $5.82 million to settle a lawsuit he filed against the Justice Department in which he claimed the department violated his privacy rights by speaking with reporters about the case.

The article went on to say that after the attacks, Ivins conducted unauthorized tests but did not say he had done so before the attacks.

This is very odd.

Anthrax Scientist Commits Suicide, Report Says

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A top U.S. biodefense researcher apparently committed suicide just as the Justice Department was about to file criminal charges against him in the anthrax mailings that traumatized the nation in the weeks following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, according to a published report.

The scientist, Bruce E. Ivins, 62, who worked for the past 18 years at the government's biodefense labs at Fort Detrick, Md., had been told about the impending prosecution, the Los Angeles Times reported for Friday editions. The laboratory has been at the center of the FBI's investigation of the anthrax attacks, which killed five people.

Ivins died Tuesday at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Maryland. The Times, quoting an unidentified colleague, said the scientist had taken a massive dose of a prescription Tylenol mixed with codeine.

Committee votes to protect vet gun ownership

Committee votes to protect vet gun ownership

By Rick Maze - Staff writer
Posted : Friday Jun 27, 2008 6:27:14 EDT

Lists of veterans who have been assigned fiduciaries to handle financial matters on their behalf could not be used to prevent gun ownership under an amendment approved by the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee on Thursday.

By voice vote, the committee attached to a veterans’ health care bill an amendment prohibiting the Department of Veterans Affairs from sharing lists of so-called “incompetent” veterans with the FBI. Only if there has been specific ruling that a veteran poses a risk to himself or others could the VA pass a name on to the FBI for inclusion in records used to make instant background checks before gun purchases, under the amendment to S 2969, the Veterans’ Health Care Authorization Act of 2008.

Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina, ranking Republican on the veterans’ committee and the chief sponsor of the amendment, said the VA makes a determination of incompetence based, primarily, on whether a veteran is capable of handling his own finances. If he cannot, a fiduciary is appointed to handle their benefits.

Not sure on this one at all. A friend is in this postition. What we have to remember is that there is not always a one size fits all answer. Some of these veterans should never have been able to own a gun, just like some people in this country should never be able to own one. But what is the answer? Do we go with this but allow the local law enforcement to make their own rules given the fact they are the ones dealing with whatever happens in the long run? Murphy and Akaka want to side on common sense but Burr wants to take the side of the NRA attitude. Who is right?

When Congress was taking on gun ownership for PTSD veterans, they were very upset wondering if veterans with mild PTSD would have to give up their jobs if they had to give up their guns. some of them decided that they would not seek treatment for PTSD because of this. Would you rather see a veteran with PTSD owning a gun and not getting help or would you rather see them getting help and keeping their jobs? Again there is not a one size fits all answer when it comes to PTSD. After all, we do have thousands of them in Iraq and Afghanistan right now with weapons a lot more dangerous than a hand gun.

FBI investigating what inmate's jailers call a suicide

FBI investigating what inmate's jailers call a suicide
By Nathan C. Gonzalez
The Salt Lake Tribune

Article Last Updated: 12/09/2007 01:36:15 AM MST

The FBI said Saturday it is investigating the death of a Box Elder County jail inmate who jail officials say committed suicide last month.
FBI spokesman Juan Becerra said federal officials are looking into alleged civil rights violations related to the death of inmate Chad Peterson, 26, who died Nov. 10 at the jail.
"The only thing I can say is we are looking into that as a civil rights violation," Becerra said Saturday. "Any civil rights case referred to us, we have to do an investigation in a quick manner."
Word of the FBI's investigation came as a surprise to Box Elder Sheriff Lynn Yeates. "We've had no contact from anybody with the FBI," he said, adding an internal investigation into Peterson's death is ongoing and deputies are awaiting autopsy and toxicology results from the medical examiner.
Jail officials have said that Peterson was found dead inside his cell less than 24 hours after being booked Nov. 9. The sheriff's office said Peterson hanged himself.
