State Flag Placed at Vietnam Wall to Honor Louisiana Veterans

WASHINGTON – A 1,200-mile journey through the heat of the southern days and the cool temperatures of the northeast, strapped to the back of a Harley Davidson, describes the final journey of a single Louisiana state flag. The flag was eventually placed at its final destination ... the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington.

A member of the Louisiana National Guard recently participated in the annual Run for the Wall motorcycle pilgrimage, individually escorting the flag in honor of the more than 800 U.S. Armed Forces members from Louisiana who lost their lives in the Vietnam War.

"I wanted to be able to do something special to honor veterans from Louisiana," said Staff Sgt. Perry M. Pee of Eros, La. "This is my first year to be able to make 'The Run' all the way to D.C. We spent the past year circulating the flag around the state collecting as many signatures of Louisiana veterans and current service members as we could."

"The trip was demanding," stressed the mechanic with the 527th Engineer Battalion in Ruston, La. "But I know that whatever difficulties we may have had, it's nothing like the ultimate sacrifice the Soldiers on The Wall made."

VA and Louisiana State University
Announce Site Selections for New Orleans Medical Center Projects

WASHINGTON (Nov. 25, 2008) - In a public event held today in New
Orleans, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the State of
Louisiana jointly announced the selection of adjacent downtown sites for
construction of their replacement medical center projects. The two
projects, called the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the Louisiana
State University Academic Medical Center, restore greatly needed health
care capability lost in New Orleans during flooding after Hurricane
Katrina in late August 2005.

"Restoring a full capability medical center for our veterans in New
Orleans and southeastern Louisiana is one of the Secretary's highest
priorities," said Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs Gordon H.
Mansfield. "Site selection is a key milestone in the project delivery
process."

"VA selected the downtown site because it offers the best solution for
our veterans, today and into the future," Mansfield added. "The site,
located within a robust medical district with affiliate health care
teaching universities, promotes long term operational synergy and
efficiency. The selected site aligns with the City of New Orleans and
State of Louisiana Hurricane Katrina recovery and redevelopment plans."

An agreement between VA and the City of New Orleans obligates the city
to acquire the land for the new facility, prepare the site for
construction and turn over the site to VA within one year.

"I understand this site selection creates near term impact on the
directly affected and surrounding neighborhoods," Mansfield continued.

"We have been working cooperatively with federal, state, city and
neighborhood partners to develop a robust package of treatment measures
to mitigate the negative impacts and invest in new local opportunities."

"Constructing this state-of-the-art medical complex near downtown New
Orleans follows through on the Administration's commitment to fully
support recovery efforts," he said.

The announcement follows a nearly one-year process of extensive study of
site alternatives, including analysis of the potential impacts on the
environment and historically significant structures.

"Today is of great significance for the City of New Orleans and for the
veterans of the Gulf Coast. The announcement by my colleagues at the
U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs brings to closure a collaborative
and inclusive process involving Federal, state and local government, as
well as stakeholders who determined the location of the new veterans
hospital," said retired Maj. Gen. Douglas O'Dell, federal coordinator
for Gulf Coast rebuilding.

"The hospital is a key component of the city's vision of a revitalized
downtown area and a world class medical campus," O'Dell added.

"Further, this decision advances the goal President Bush and Secretary
Peake established of better access to quality health care for the needs
of current and future veterans,"

Dr. John Lombardi, LSU System President, said that building these
hospitals in close proximity to each other assures the future of top
quality health care, research, and medical education not only for the
New Orleans area but for the entire state for many years to come. "This
is a major milestone in constructing these joint academic medical
centers that are destined to be models of health care reform for the
nation in creating thousands of jobs while delivering cost-efficient
medical treatment and disease management," he said.

New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin, who hosted today's news conference where
the announcement was made, said, "The new VA hospital in downtown New
Orleans will provide needed medical care for veterans throughout the
region and will serve as a key economic driver for our future. Along
with the new LSU hospital, it will serve as the centerpiece of our
biomedical district, generating thousands of jobs and enabling our city
to compete with communities that are known for their medical services
and research."

Gustav taking a mental toll on some residents

Gustav taking a mental toll on some residents

By Caroline Moses

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Recovery from Gustav can be traumatic, and with another storm looming just outside the gulf, the pressure is on. Many of us are feeling worn out and nervous. Some of it is left over from Gustav, but also because Ike is approaching the Gulf of Mexico. Mental health experts say these feelings are normal and even common for south Louisianians.

Latonia Dunbar's house was severely damaged by Hurricane Gustav. So now, she questions the stability of Louisiana's weather and her safety. "It keeps you on edge," she says. She also says her questions have taken a serious toll on her mental well-being. "When sky cloud and rain down, never thought would have flashback or PSTD thing going on."

"Feeling despondent, angry, rageful, depressed, isolated. Those are normal reactions." Dr. Daphne Cain teaches and studies post traumatic stress disorder at LSU. She says high anxiety is particularly common for those who have already experienced large storms, and for children. She says there are actions you can take to minimize those feelings. "Try to push yourself to be social with people, with family and friends, to reach out and connect ‘cause that can be helpful in lowering anxiety."

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio National Guard is sending 1,500 troops to Louisiana to help with the cleanup following Hurricane Gustav.

Guard spokesman James Sims said the deployment could begin Thursday or Friday. Units from Columbus, Newark and Coshocton will be among those sending troops.

Last week, the Guard sent a CH-47 Chinook helicopter and five crew members from a battalion based in Akron at the request of Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal. Army, Air Force pounce into action on Gustav

By Kris Osborn - Staff writer

Army medium tactical trucks are hauling food, water and supplies to Gustav-damaged areas. Black Hawk and Kiowa Warrior helicopters are patrolling from the skies on search-and-rescue missions looking for victims. And Air Force planes have evacuated up to 16,000 residents — all as the U.S. military draws upon its home-stationed assets to help the Federal Emergency Management Agency respond to Hurricane Gustav, a Category 2 storm that rocked the Gulf coast of Louisiana on Monday.

The Army National Guard has been called upon by the governors of four states, sending more than 10,000 troops to Gustav-impacted areas. Deployments include 3,400 troops in Louisiana, up to 5,000 in Texas, and 3,000 in Alabama.

Overall, the National Guard has twice as much of the needed equipment to respond to hurricanes along the Gulf Coast compared with three years ago, when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, said Maj. Gen. William Etter, the director of domestic operations for the National Guard Bureau, at a FEMA briefing Friday.

Louisiana state party chairman says McCain has been "extremely helpful"
Louisiana will cast all 47 votes during roll call vote, chairman vows

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (CNN) -- With Hurricane Gustav bearing down on their state, Louisiana delegates to the Republican National Convention on Sunday were torn between party duty and concern for family back home.

With the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina still fresh in their minds, many delegates returned home to help their families or, as elected officials, their communities evacuate, said Louisiana state party chairman Roger F. Villere, Jr.

But the delegates also knew they had a responsibility to Louisiana's Republican voters to cast the state's 47 votes to make sure the party's presumptive nominee, Sen. John McCain, is on the ballot in Louisiana in November.

"We've got a job to do. We're caught in the crossfire," said alternative delegate Donald Moriatry, II of Alexandria, Louisiana, said.

As the delegation was briefed by representatives from the McCain campaign at its hotel in east Minneapolis, Minnesota, delegates called home to talk with family members about evacuation plans and watched as the big, red center of Gustav headed towards New Orleans on cable news channels.

All conversation ceased when Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal appeared on the screen to discuss the state's emergency preparations.

Louisiana National Guard gets ready for Gustav

La. Guard braces for Gustav

Posted : Friday Aug 29, 2008 10:59:44 EDT

About 3,000 members of the Louisiana National Guard have been put on notice as part of the state’s preparations for a possible Gustav landfall next week.

The soldiers will be pre-staged at several armories so they can be quickly deployed, said Gen. Bennett Landreneau, commander of the Guard. That number could increase to 5,000, if needed, he said.

“Right now, with a storm a possible threat to Louisiana, we have called all of our soldiers in the Army and Air National Guard to be prepared for a possible alert,” said Cpt. Taysha Deaton-Gibbs, Department of Public Affairs Officer. “They know they need to be ready at a moment’s notice.”

No units had been activated as of Wednesday morning, but that could change quickly.

“We are prepping our response vehicles and equipment, so we’ll be able to take immediate action,” Deaton-Gibbs said. “We are being prepared in case further development occurs. Right now, we’re looking at ‘H’ hours. If the storm is to hit Tuesday, that could start tomorrow.”

“H” hours signify when the hurricane would hit and the Guard would be in action.

The Guard will be included in a meeting set today with the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.

KINDER, La. (AP) - Police say a car failed to yield at a Louisiana railroad crossing and drove into the path of a freight train, killing the two people inside the car.

State Police Senior Trooper Stephen LaFargue says 52-year-old Nelson Guidry and his passenger, 46-year-old Jacqueline Guidry, were pronounced dead at the scene of Monday's accident. Both were from Kinder, about 180 miles west of New Orleans.

LaFargue says Guidry's Chevrolet Cavalier failed to yield as a southbound Union Pacific train approached. The crossing was marked with signs but no crossing arms. He says the engineer sounded the horn as it approached.

Neither victim was wearing a seat belt. Routine toxicology tests are pending. No one on the train was injured.

National Guardsman Matthew Trahan killed in Baton Rouge

La. guardsman shot, killed in car

The Associated Press
Posted : Friday May 2, 2008 11:54:59 EDT

BATON ROUGE, La. — An off-duty National Guardsman who was within weeks of departure for Thailand and, eventually, Iraq, was shot and killed in Baton Rouge. A man accused in his murder was arrested Thursday.

Larry Murray, 18, of Baton Rouge, turned himself in to Zachary police Thursday night and was being charged in the first-degree murder of Matthew Trahan, 20, said Sgt. Don Kelly, a Baton Rouge police spokesman.

Trahan was shot Wednesday night in a run-down North Baton Rouge neighborhood five blocks from an Exxon refinery. Baton Rouge police said he was from Lafayette, about 60 miles west of Baton Rouge; relatives said he was from Scott, a suburb of Lafayette.

“Trahan had apparently given the suspect Murray a ride and, at some point, investigators believe Murray shot Trahan and then robbed him of cash,” Kelly wrote in a news release.

Police had a warrant for Murray’s arrest within hours.
