Fort Bragg Soldier's Death Touched Many By How He LIved

Fallen Fort Bragg soldier remembered for selfless service, dedication to troops

May 27, 2015
A Fort Bragg soldier who died in Afghanistan the day before Memorial Day is being remembered for his selfless service to the families of fallen troops and his dedication to his soldiers.

Pablo A. Ruiz III died Sunday of non-combat-related injuries in Bagram.

The 37-year-old soldier from Melbourne, Florida, was deployed with elements of the 3rd Special Forces Group. The cause of his death remains under investigation, officials said.

Ruiz, who was posthumously promoted to master sergeant, was noncommissioned officer in charge of a dining facility for Special Forces soldiers in Afghanistan, according to officials.

His battalion commander, Lt. Col. John Sannes, said in an email from Afghanistan that Ruiz led by example, "always diving in alongside his soldiers to complete any mission or task."

"We lost a great soldier, leader, husband and father," Sannes said.

Melbourne Wickham Park Veterans Reunion

I was glad for the clouds since it wasn't too hot out in Melbourne this morning. It was great to see the crowds and still stunning, even after all these years, to see the memorials.

UPDATE

Veterans reunion attendance builds after rainy start

"I get to connect with my fellow veterans," Miller said. "I get camaraderie with the other veterans."

MELBOURNE – The crowds, kept away from the rained-out opening ceremony of the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall, began to build Friday morning at the Vietnam and All Veterans Reunion.

Veterans strolled among the dozens of information and vendor booths and tents as others reflected at the wall.

The reunion, which goes on through Sunday, is open to the public. It is being held at Wickham Park in Melbourne and is billed as the largest of its kind.

"I like to meet different veterans and tell them 'Welcome home,'" said Harvey White, 73, of Charlotte, North Carolina.

White, 73, who served with the Army's 71st Transportation Company in Vietnam, said liked the camaraderie he encountered at the reunion.

"I'm very proud to have worn the uniform of this country," he said.

David Miller, a 69-year-old Vietnam veteran from Palm Bay, has been a part of the reunion for many years. He serves on the organizing board.

Veterans Invade Melbourne

'Largest veterans reunion' brings tens of thousands to Melbourne
News 13
By Jerry Hume, Brevard County Reporter
April 23, 2015

MELBOURNE -- Tens of thousands of people are making their way to the Space Coast on Thursday for an event that is being billed as the largest veterans reunion in the country.

The 28th annual Vietnam and All Veterans Reunion will take place at Wickham Park in Melbourne.

The centerpiece of the reunion is the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

The traveling wall, which was made in Brevard County, has traveled about 160,000 miles across the United States.

"It affects everybody differently — family members are moved one way, friends another," said Greg Welsh, the chairman of the event. "Just a Vietnam veteran could be moved someway else. It's an emotional experience for most people when they come out here."

Event organizers expect about 100,000 people to show up for Thursday's reunion, which will fill up local campgrounds and hotels.

The reunion was originally designed just for Vietnam veterans, but it has expanded in its 28 years. Now, all veterans are invited to show up and remember friends and family members who were killed while fighting for the U.S.

Melbourne AIrshow Not Worth The Trip

This morning my husband and I headed over to the Space Coast for the Melbourne Airshow. What should have taken about 90 minutes, turned into over 2 hours because of traffic near the airport. Then it was a trip from hell onto the grass lot and $20 just to park the car. We were crammed in tight and not sure if we'd be able to leave early. We were told we could.

The walk to the venue was over a mile away. Not a great idea considering while most folks are still dealing with Winter hanging around, it was about 90 here. Plus it's an airshow, so there were a lot of veterans and some of them were disabled along with being elderly. We saw busses and some golf carts but no one knew anything about how to get to use any of them.

Ok, so it was another $20 a piece to get in. We spent $60 and then another $6 for 2 bottles of water we needed after walking that far in the heat.

They had porta-potties, but you could only get to them after the hike, after the line to pay and after the line to get in. While there were enough of them, the problem was there was nothing provided to clean your hands afterwards. Plenty of food vendors around charging a lot of money for food that didn't seem to appetizing topped off with there was no place to sit other than some tents reserved for special folks.

We saw one pilot stun everyone but by the time he was done, I wanted to leave. The heat had gotten to me and so did everything else.

I felt as I was may pass out, so my husband took both cameras and we headed out. A woman walked right past me and stepped on my foot but just kept walking. At this point I was screaming "get me out of here" in my head. God love my husband!

We got near the exit and my husband asked a guy with a golf cart about getting a ride. He asked where we parked and we pointed near the busses we could barely see. He told us those buses were only for people who parked further away. My husband told him I felt faint and he just didn't say a word.

Well we got to the area where we parked and were really angry when a bus pulled up right where we told the other guy where we parked and he actually picked people up!

All in all, it could have been a great day if we had known what we were getting into and just stayed home.

If you plan on going tomorrow,
Bring a lot of cash! You'll need it just to park.

Leave a lot earlier than you planned on.

Bring chairs and you better bring your own shade.

Don't bring water since they won't let you in the gate with it.

Make sure you find someone with a clue what it going on so you know how to get on the damn bus and won't have to walk over a mile.

Since it will be hot, you'll need to drink a lot and that means, you guessed it, the porta potties, so make sure you have your own hand sanitizers.

Make sure you have sunscreen on since I didn't even think of it.

Remember folks, above all this may have military planes but it is a money maker for the folks putting it on.

The parking lot was still filling up while we were leaving.

Easy to tell from the few pictures I took that I was not having a good time at all!

Thousands of bikers will rumble across the Space Coast on Sunday for a toy run to benefit children for Christmas.
Thousands of motorcyclists joined the ABATE of Florida Brevard County Chapter’s 32nd annual Toy Run last year. Traffic officials said motorists should plan ahead to avoid delays this Sunday’s Toy Run procession along U.S. 1.

Forget the silver bells, for a weekend: the roaring engines of several hundred motorcycles may be the true sound of the season for children hoping for a gift this Christmas.

Sunday, thousands of bikers - including many dressed in the familiar red and white winter garb worn by Santa Claus - will rumble across the Space Coast as part of the 33rd Annual ABATE Motorcycle Toy Run to bring several truckloads of toys to be distributed this holiday season.

"It's a great event. And for a short period of time our traffic will be affected so we're asking the public to be aware and to plan accordingly," said Cpl. David Jacobs, spokesman for the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

The procession of motorcycles - organized by the ABATE of Florida, Brevard County chapter - will mean heavy traffic along some of Brevard County's most heavily traveled roadways, including U.S. 1. The group will also have Santa Claus as the grand marshal.

Guarino, an Indian Harbour Beach resident, was a highly decorated veteran, who also served in World War II and Korea. He told the story of his captivity in Vietnam in "A POW Story — 2801 Days in Hanoi."

"That book inspired so many people," said Evelyn Guarino, his wife of 71 years.

She said a young private once wrote her husband to say that after reading about what Guarino went through in prison, he was ashamed of himself for complaining about not having his family with him in Germany where he was serving.

"He was a wonderful man," Evelyn Guarino said. "He had a great sense of humor."

She said he served for 33 years as a pilot and loved the plane he flew in World War II, the Spitfire.

His medals included the Air Force Cross, the second highest military award, Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Purple Hearts.

Florida Veterans' Reunion Not Rained Out

The 27th Annual Vietnam and All Veterans Reunion was not rained out yesterday. Sure there were a lot less people and vendors but I was surprised by so many others coming out in the rain to visit the Vietnam Wall. The ground was saturated but no one seemed to be willing to let that stop them. There was an elderly woman in a wheelchair being pushed thru the mud and puddles and kids jumping in others.

MELBOURNE — A life-sized replica of a white-gloved Marine wearing dress blues stands at perpetual attention in Bill Mueller’s front yard, flanked by a pair of fawn-colored boxers.

The 71-year-old installed the statue — plus a new 16-foot flagpole to fly the Stars and Stripes — last month to honor U.S. troops fighting overseas. Motorists in the Indianhead subdivision have noticed, pulling over to stare and take photos.

“Every time I heard about guys getting killed or maimed in Afghanistan and Iraq, it just kind of tears you up a little bit. And I just wanted to do something to do a dedication to the soldiers,” said Mueller who served in the Marines from 1961-64.

“ ‘Awesome’ is the word I hear the most. People are stopping by all the time taking pictures, and they come to the door and ask me if they can take pictures. I say, ‘Help yourself. Take all the pictures you want,’ ” he said.

Melbourne Wall Escort

This morning I arrived for the Melbourne Wall Escort late for the first time in years. I didn't get a chance to get the bikes coming in so I am very sorry to the people I always film. I did manage to get some footage of the Orlando Nam Knights riding back toward Orlando and at that Lone Cabbage. As always the fried gator was wonderful!

Here are a couple of pictures to hold you over until I get the footage edited. Working on that right now.
