Orlando Veterans raise funds for others in need

These two said if they raised $1,000, they would have their heads shaved!
There was jail time,
and more jail time
and some more jail time
and then there were gifts
but more, there was a great time had by all!

At the end of the video it was announced they raised over $3,000 but later it was announced it was over $4,000!

New Veterans Bill in Florida May Put Us At Number Two

About the Orlando VA Medical Center

The Orlando VA Medical Center, serving an area of more than 90,000 veteran patients in East Central Florida, is one of seven members of the VISN 8 Healthcare System. The Orlando VA Medical Center includes the Orlando VA Medical Center, the Community Living Center, the Residential Rehabilitation Program, the Viera Outpatient Clinic, the Daytona Outpatient Clinic, and four Community Based Outpatient Clinics located in Clermont, Kissimmee, Leesburg, and Orange City.

The East Central Florida veteran population is slated for a new hospital in 2014. This much needed facility will make it easier for east central Florida veterans to access VA’s world-class medical center and relieve the burden of traveling long distances for their inpatient care.

As for right here in Central Florida
Central Florida is home to nearly 400,000 veterans, 90,000 of whom are seen at the current Orlando VA Medical Center every year. Comprised of a Nursing Home Care Unit, the Domiciliary and Rehabilitation Program, the Viera and Daytona outpatient clinics, and three Community Based Outpatient Clinics in Leesburg, Kissimmee, and Sanford, the VA Center provides a wide range of services to veterans throughout the region.

With new veterans bill, Florida aims to be 'most military-friendly state'
By Scott Travis
(Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) Sun Sentinel
Published: May 10, 2014

Florida is determined to be on the front lines when it comes to recruiting more veterans to the state.

This year, the state legislature passed the "Florida G.I. Bill," which "makes Florida the most military-friendly state in the nation and supports the brave men and women who protect us at home and abroad," Senate President Don Gaetz said.

Among its provisions, the bill:

Guarantees honorably discharged veterans in-state college tuition, even if they have lived here less than a year.

Pumps about $22 million into initiatives that benefit the military and veterans, including funding to buy land near military installations to give them buffer zones and money to renovate Florida National Guard armories.

Provides funding for deployed National Guard members to receive a four-year bachelor's degree through online courses.

Expands which veterans get preference in public employment to include members of the U.S. Armed Forces Reserves and the Florida National Guard.

Waives fees for professional licenses for 60 months after honorable discharge, up from the current 24 months.

Creates "Florida Is for Veterans, Inc.," a nonprofit to promote Florida as the place for veterans to live.

Authorizes the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs to sell memorial bricks that will be used for a Florida Veterans' Walk of Honor and Memorial Garden in Tallahassee.
read more here

Florida has the third largest veterans population in the country. There is always something for veterans to do here and that is a wonderful thing considering only 7% of the general population belong to the military family.

Today I am heading out to the Orlando Nam Knights Clubhouse for a huge fundraiser.
Nam Knights of America and Semper Fidelis of America 3rd Annual Fund Raising Dinner – Sat May 10 – A 3 course dinner professionally catered by Le Cordon Bleu with live music. $100 per couple. 1451 N. County Rd 13, Orlando/Bithlo, 32820. (East side) Proceeds go to Homes For Our Troops – this year for USMC Sgt Anthony McDaniel www.nkorlando.org and www.semperfidelisamerica.org

Here is just a sample of what else is going on right here in Central Florida for veterans this month.

Florida also has one of the largest veterans reunions in Melbourne. This is the Vietnam Memorial Wall Escort.
It looks like if this bill does what lawmakers think it will, Florida should take the number two spot for veterans in the nation!

May - Veterans, military and patriotic events in Central FL

May - Veterans, military and patriotic events in Central FL

If you wish to be removed from the email list, just let me know.
Please share these events with your friends and interested others and attend.  Post where appropriate.
If you want people to attend your events, you might try to attend some of theirs first!  By networking you may find some great future members for your group.  There is strength in numbers!

Memorial Day - Groups are starting to think about planning ceremonies for Memorial Day.  Please consider coordinating them together or staggering event times.  Many people are interested in attending more than one and cannot because of time overlaps.  More people would be able to attend – strength in numbers.  Communicate your event info with your city and county veterans’ councils.

Army Reservists of the local 143rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command (ESC) will be returning to Orlando very soon.  They have been in Afghanistan or Kuwait since last summer.  It is very doubtful that they will return in a large group, but instead will be in multiple small to medium size groups.  If you are interested in possibly welcoming them home at the airport please let me know.  As OPSEC permits and information becomes available I will let those interested persons know.  Cathy Haynes   chaynes11629@yahoo.com

Last night proved beyond a doubt that when people come together for a common cause, mountains are moved out of the way!

Last year, Mary Ingrassia heard about a Green Beret double amputee Josh Burnette and decided to do something to help him. Semper Fidelis America President John Murphy has always been about team work. Just ask any of the veterans groups in Central Florida and they will tell you how active he and his wife Teresa are. Doug Pattelena, Commander VFW Post 4287 also knows this. Because they worked together, Josh knew how much he was loved with a fabulous night of appreciation, fun and over $10,000 in donations for his future.

Durning the event Mary heard about another young combat wounded hero, Bo Reichenbach. Bo, a Navy SEAL, lost both of his legs in 2012 while serving in Afghanistan. It was his time to be star of the show at the VFW.

Even Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer sent a proclamation declaring Bo Reichenbach Day!

Check back in a day or two for the videos on this fabulous event and go here for more pictures.

Semper Fidelis of America had their annual fundraiser Brothers In Bras at the VFW Post 4287 in Orlando last night. As usual it was a lot of fun. This fundraiser is for breast cancer and it is amazing what these veterans are willing to do for the women they love!

And then the weekly bingo game was invaded by men in pink bras.

When he's 64

Today at the Orlando VFW Post 4287 Semper Fidelis had a Welcome Home Party for Vietnam veterans. It was also the President's 64th birthday. He ended up surprised, especially by the bad singing of Happy Birthday. Oh well, so we can't sing. There was also a brother and sister tribute because they have decided to join the military. One going into the Air Force and one into the Marines.

Orlando Rocks for SFC Josh Burnette

Saturday was the fundraiser tribute to SFC Josh Burnette, a combat wounded Green Beret. Semper Fidelis and the VFW joined forces to help Josh with his healing after losing both legs in service to our country.

This is a highlight video. If you want a full DVD copy of it, email me woundedtimes@ao.com. Fabulous show!

Update.
While putting together the whole video I kept going back to this clip and each time I laughed harder. This is the last of the highlights. You'll just have to order the DVD if you want to see more.

SFC Josh Burnette cheered by 200 in Orlando

UPDATE February 2, 2013
Just to let you know the video project is finally done! Because there was so much footage to use, it ended up over an hour long and is a huge file so it hard to be compressed and then compressed again until I got it down to the size where it would fit onto a DVD. As it is, there are two parts to it and I am about to try something new. There is a new DVD that will hold over 8 GB, so wish me luck or you'll be getting two DVDs.
Three weeks worth of editing and while I wanted to pull my hair out, I have to say that after watching the footage about a thousand times, I still get a kick out of it. It was a lot of fun and a really great cause. So proud of everyone for doing all of this for a wonderful man like Josh.
Check back soon for an update post to be done sometime tomorrow.

Yesterday was the event for SFC JOSH BURNETTE, US ARMY, GREEN BERET at the VFW. Josh was given a limo ride and motorcycle escort Orlando style! About 200 people came to help Josh be welcomed back home after a long recovery. There will be more on this as soon as I have the video done. This three hour event was a a lot of fun to cover and here's a few shots grabbed from the film.

Here are some videos from the event. If you want to watch the whole thing, you'll have to order a DVD for a tax deductible donation of $20.00. Use PAYPAL button on this site and make sure to put in DVD with your name and address. You can also mail checks to

Wounded Times Year End Thank You

Wounded Times Year End Thank You
by Kathie Costos
Wounded Times Blog
December 31, 2012

It has been a crazy, busy, year. In May I finished Valencia College Digital Media Certification. Not bad, ended up with a 3.1 GPA.

The top post this year as well as last year was For Those I Love I will Sacrifice with a total of 35,038 views.

In November I re-released For the Love of Jack, His War/My Battle the book I self published in 2002 trying to warn families about what they were facing with combat and PTSD.

Last month I started a new book, The Warrior SAW, Suicides After War, because of requests from families needing help when someone they love committed suicide. I hope to have it finished next month.

I need your prayers while I get through this because it is emotionally draining.

Up until I was done with college, I didn't want to ask for donations because it just didn't seem right.

In August, I finally received my tax exempt from the State of Florida and was able to start getting donations. Up until then, all the work I did, the travel, equipment, food, phone and everything else was coming out of my husband's pocket. Usually it runs between $1,000 and $2,000 a month depending on how much traveling I have to do. While this is really low for a charity, what I do does not cost much at all, but when you are talking about taking the money out of your personal budget, it hurts!

Brothers in Bras

Videos created for 2012

All of these videos from this year, as well as videos done going back to 2006, were all done for free! The donations above, while deeply appreciated, were not enough to cover the cost of going to these events during the year. The editing program to turn footage into videos is $2,500. Camera equipment along with everything else is very expensive. My car is getting old on top of everything else, so if you want to see more veterans events covered next year, I'm counting on you to carry me through!

Remember, your donations are tax deductible and also cover spiritual counseling I do with veterans and their families.

Brothers in pink bras

Last night I went to meet up with friends and show support for some of Orlando's guys dressed up in their finest pink bras to raise funds for breast cancer sponsored by Semper Fidelis at the VFW Post 4287 along with members of the Orlando Nam Knights. Great cause and lots of fun.
