The nation-wide organization has three local hubs that take veterans on a single day trip to our nation’s capital where they visit the WWII, Korea, and Vietnam War Memorials, Marine Corps Iwo Jima and the Air Force Monuments, and witness the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. Free parking has been arranged at an off airport property – FastPark and Relax (7870 N Frontage Rd, Orlando, 32812) who has been very generous to Honor Flights with free parking and shuttles to/from the airport (Tips welcomed by drivers!) Home At Last dedication – Sat. July 1 – A special disability-friendly, mortgage-free home – the eighth one - will be dedicated for Army Capt. Elmer Rivera and his family in Oakland. He was badly injured from a mortar attack in Iraq in 2004. The house keys will be handed over in a ceremony at Oakland Avenue Charter School cafeteria at 10am, 456 E. Oakland Ave. HAL is a special program that builds homes for combat-wounded permanently disabled veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan war. Navy Seal Team VI Memorial unveiling – Tues. July 4 – Never Forgotten Memorial hosts this event that commemorates the 30 members of that unit who were killed in a helicopter crash in 2011. Fireworks at the Fountain – Tues. July 4 – The City of Orlando celebrates our nation’s freedom at Lake Eola Park with festivities beginning at 4pm. Wearing of Military Awards with Civilian Clothes - per Military.com - It is permissible for veterans and retirees to wear military awards on civilian clothes for gatherings of a military theme. Retired personnel and former members of the military may wear all categories of medals on appropriate civilian clothing. This includes clothes designed for veteran and patriotic organizations. The medals may be worn on: Veteran's Day, Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day, formal occasions of ceremony, social functions of a military nature. Hand salutes – The National Defense Authorization Act of 2008, which took effect Jan. 28, 2008, and with other recent revisions, authorize optional hand-salutes by veterans and out-of-uniform military personnel during events involving the national flag (ie: The raising, lowering or passing of the flag, during the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance.) All other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, or if applicable, remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart.
Military Exchange Shopping - Shopping online at the “Exchange” (formerly called the PX) online is being opened up to all who have served. The Army, Air Force and Navy exchange will start allowing all honorably discharged veterans to shop online, (think Amazon, but only cheaper with no taxes.) The target start date is Veterans Day, November 11, 2017 - but you must register first. Registration begins June 1, 2017. You must call 1-844-868-8672, after June 1 to register. United Way Offers Assistance to Veterans and Families – per Military.com | Week of June 12, 2017, United Way's Mission United program assists military veterans and their families in acclimating back to civilian life. Veterans can face challenges transitioning from active duty, and too many find themselves homeless, jobless, or unable to access treatment for substance abuse, brain injury, or other physical and mental health issues. Mission United is a free program that coordinates community services for veterans and their families, connecting them to affordable housing, job training, health care and other resources. More than anything else, Omar Delgado remembers the phones. Dozens of them, he said, ringing incessantly and spinning in pools of their owners’ blood, the only sound in an otherwise quiet nightclub.
Delgado, 45, an Eatonville Police officer, was one of the first responders to the June 12, 2016, Pulse nightclub shooting. As he entered the club through a patio door that night, he saw bleeding and bullet-torn bodies strewn across the dance floor, many of them slumped on top of one another, their phones ringing next to them.
“I knew it was a loved one trying to reach that person and they were never ever going to pick up that phone again,” Delgado said in an interview with USA TODAY. “It was horrific.”
A year ago Monday, gunman Omar Mateen opened fire inside Pulse, a popular LGBT club in Orlando, with a semi-automatic rifle and a 9mm Glock pistol, killing 49 patrons and injuring 53 others in one of the deadliest shooting sprees in U.S. history. The Coast Guard Cutter EAGLE, provides USCG Academy cadets and officer candidates with their first taste of sea and salt air. Built in Germany in 1936 and recommissioned by the United States at the close of World War II, the EAGLE is the largest tall ship flying the Stars and Stripes. This will be a unique opportunity! Battle of Midway Commemoration - This year marks the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Midway. On June 4th 1942, a vastly outnumbered and outgunned U.S. Fleet defeated the finest of the Imperial Japanese Navy in the waters off a small Pacific Atoll named Midway. The combination of intelligence, tactics, courage, sacrifice and luck forever changed the course of the war and world history. Thank a WW2 Pacific veteran!
D-Day Commemoration - On June 6, 1944, more than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline, to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which, “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end, the Allies gained a foot-hold in Continental Europe. The cost in lives on D-Day was high. More than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded, but their sacrifice allowed more than 100,000 Soldiers to begin the slow, hard slog across Europe, to defeat Adolf Hitler’s troops. Thank a WW2 European theater veteran, especially one involved in D-Day.

Oviedo Veterans’ Tribute Golf Tournament – Fri. June 9 – This fund raiser is also a memorial tribute to its original planner, Mark Stockwell, who died unexpectedly only a few months ago. The “Fountain of Service” in Oviedo’s Veterans Memorial has the military branches presented on polished granite blocks. Water flows from each into a common trough, moving slowly and seems to disappear into the lake. This represents the idea of honorable separation and sacrifice. June 12 – On this anniversary of the “Pulse” nightclub tragedy, persons are encouraged to continue showing a response of love, compassion and unity. The Disabled American Veterans (DAV), - Wed-Sun June 14-18 - Department of Florida Annual State Convention at the Lake Mary Marriott. The DAV will help draw attention to the numerous suicides a day by Veterans by bringing the Spartan Swordto its convention. Forged from steel that was recovered from the World Trade Center and the aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy, the Spartan Pledge is a commitment among veterans to not take their own lives but rather stand for their fellow soldiers in times of despair. Coast Guard Auxiliary meeting – Sat. May 20 – The Orlando-Winter Park Flotilla 17-11 meets on the 3rd Sat. of each month, 9am, at the Lake Baldwin VA Clinic, 5201 Raymond St., Orlando, 32803. Auxiliary members are volunteers who support the Coast Guard in all its non-military, and non-law-enforcement missions. Members help to provide maritime safety, security and stewardship; to secure the homeland, save lives and property; and to protect the environment. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle visit to Port Canaveral: May 31- June 3. This is a tall ship – one with real masts and sails. The Coast Guard Cutter EAGLE, provides USCG Academy cadets and officer candidates with their first taste of sea and salt air. Built in Germany in 1936 and recommissioned by the United States at the close of World War II, the EAGLE is the largest tall ship flying the Stars and Stripes. This will be a unique opportunity.

Research Project - Active military, reservists, guardsmen and veterans needed – If you or someone you know has experience overseas, a research project is ongoing at the UCF RESTORES lab at the University of Central Florida. The project determines if smells influence their experience in virtual environments similar to those we use in the treatment of combat-related PTSD. Burial Schedules - VA is now providing online daily burial schedules for its national cemeteries, per VAntage Point, Official Blog of the Department of Veterans Affairs, March 24, 2017. The online schedule for all VA national cemeteries that will allow families, friends and community members to find time and location information for those being interred. Thank you, Ed Burford, Seminole Co. VSO. (Locally: This effects the grounds at Bushnell and Cape Canaveral – Some people and groups don’t want ANY veteran to be buried or interred alone and forgotten. This will allow a tribute to the deceased veteran.)
Drivers’ Licenses, TSA, federal facilities and military bases – If you are a snowbird or have snowbird family, residents of eight states will no longer be able to use their state-issued ID for domestic air travel [or to enter a federal facility or military base]. Beginning January 22, 2018, residents of Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Pennsylvania, South Carolina or Washington, will no longer be valid to pass TSA-checkpoints with their state IDs [driver’s license]. This means they'll have to bring a passport, military ID or permanent resident card next time they go to the airport, even if they're just traveling within the United States. (Jan. 2017 resources, including Military.com) Why? These states don't meet the federal government's minimum security standards, which requires verifying every ID applicant's identity, putting anti-counterfeit technology into the production of the card and conducting background checks on the people issuing the driver's licenses.
Puerto Rican birth certificates - All certified copies of birth certificates issued prior to July 1, 2010, have become invalid. The government of Puerto Rico has invalidated every birth certificate issued on the island before July 1, 2010, in an attempt to curb rampant fraud and identity theft that officials say has ruined lives, strained social service programs and compromised national security.
