RAYMOND, N.H. — A Raymond police officer is being credited with saving the life of a soldier home from overseas deployment by pulling him out of a burning car.

Police say Officer Ryan Lehman was nearby when he heard the report of a crash on a Route 101 off-ramp early Sunday morning. He could see the car in the woods, so instead of driving, he ran toward it, arriving just as the vehicle became engulfed in flames.

Devastating death rate from crashes sounds the alarm at Veterans Affairs

In the first years after returning from deployment, veterans of the two wars are 75 percent more likely to die in motor vehicle accidents than civilians of comparable age, race, and sex, according to a 2008 VA study. The rate for motorcycle deaths is an astounding 148 percent higher.

NORTHAMPTON - For Dominic Taverna, a two-tour Army scout who prowled Iraq for insurgents, the dream of peace and quiet lost some of its appeal when he returned to Revere in 2007.

“I was looking for that rush, and you just couldn’t find it,’’ said Taverna, 28, staring past his folded hands. “You’re driving 90 all the time. You’re hauling ass under overpasses. You just can’t flip a switch.’’

Former Army sergeant Carlton Duncan, 26, nodded knowingly. He would drink too much, Duncan said, before grasping the wheel of his car and driving without any memory of where he went or how he got there.

Dominick Sondrini, 28, a former Marine officer, raced his car for the pure thrill of driving 90 miles per hour, “because I knew I wasn’t going to get in trouble.’’ Police nearly always allowed Sondrini, who would flash his military ID after a traffic stop, to drive away without a ticket, he said.

Dangerous driving is often a byproduct of military bravado, the three veterans said. But among survivors of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the practice is now seen as a deadly crisis, prompting the Department of Veterans Affairs to take unprecedented preventive action.

Good Samaritan saves 3 year old from burning car

Good Samaritan: I was pretty shook up
Thursday, July 23, 2009

By Rob McMillan
EL MONTE, Calif. (KABC) -- A Good Samaritan is being hailed as a life-saving hero after a daring freeway rescue.

John McDonald said he was on his way to work in Venice as he drove past the burning car, flipped on its side on the 10 Freeway.

Three people were able to get out of the car on their own, but a 3-year-old girl was trapped inside. That's when McDonald stopped his car and pulled the girl from the burning vehicle.

"Honestly I don't think about that stuff too much it just sort of happened. I think most people would have done it if they were in my position," said McDonald.

DADE CITY — When Marcus Button awoke from his medically induced coma and was able to speak again, it was with a deep Southern accent even his parents didn't recognize.

He expressed a newfound hatred for white people even though he is white. He thought he had been in outer space and to Thailand. He saw spiders.

"My son who woke up, he was not the same son I gave birth to," his mother, Robin Button, testified.

"He wasn't the same boy," said his father, Mark.

In court Wednesday, they were recalling the weeks after a 2006 car crash that left their son with head injuries. Button, then 16, was riding in a friend's car when a school bus struck them on State Road 54 in Wesley Chapel. The friend escaped with minor injuries. The bus driver was determined to be at fault.

Divers search for Pfc. Jamie Wagner Sengvanhpheng

Divers searching for missing Bragg soldierMcALLEN, Texas — Searchers continued combing a South Texas bay Sunday for a soldier who authorities believe drove his car off the end of a pier the day after Christmas.

Pfc. Jamie Wagner Sengvanhpheng, 21, was home on leave from Fort Bragg, N.C. and visiting family in Rockport when he disappeared after hanging out with friends at a bar late Christmas night.

His 2004 Acura was found submerged in Copano Bay Friday, but Sengvanhpheng was not inside.

A body had not been recovered so the search continued, a dispatcher with the Aransas County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday.

Older brother James Sengvanhpheng said there were no developments and declined to say more while his brother remained missing.

Recalled 12 year old spare tired causes fatal crash

How a 12-year-old recalled tire caused a crash that killed one man, paralyzed another
Rene Stutzman | Sentinel Staff Writer
November 24, 2008

SANFORD - The tire was a Firestone ATX, the subject of one of the nation's biggest consumer-product recalls. Millions of Americans read or heard news reports about it in 2000 and 2001, warning that it was dangerous.

But for a decade this particular tire was just a spare, bolted to the underside of an aging Ford Explorer.

A lawsuit settled in October revealed how in 2005 -- long after consumers and mechanics had stopped checking -- this tire did exactly what safety officials feared: It shredded at 65 mph.

Rotated into service on the right rear hub of the 1993 sport utility vehicle, the tire flew apart on Interstate 4 near Sanford, and the Explorer went out of control.

Its driver, Michael Enriquez, a Deltona father of four on his way home from work, hit the brakes. The vehicle skidded across the median, flipped and plowed head-on into an Infiniti driven by Douglas George Gibson, 56, of Orlando.

Iraq Veteran Matthew D. Hebell killed in car accident

Iraq War Veteran killed in car accident

Iraq War Veteran Matthew D. Hebell, 22 of Batavia died early Saturday morning when the vehicle he was driving struck a utility pole. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"My son was a very outstanding person," David Hebell said.

The Hebell family takes pride in serving their country. Four generations have fought in a foreign war. Like those before him, the youngest, Matthew Hebell loved the military.

"If he had his way in life, he would probably help everybody, he's just that type of boy," Mr. Hebell said.

Matthew was in the Army. He served a tour in Iraq and received several awards. He worked at the New York State Veteran's home in Batavia.

Saturday was supposed to be his day off. But he volunteered to work. It was on the drive, along Route 98 in Genesee County, that police believe Hebell fell asleep at the wheel. He crashed into a telephone pole and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"He had a big career coming and it was just big loss for me, my wife and my family and all the people who knew him," said Matthew's father.

His family said, at 22, Matthew achieved more than most people. He often volunteered to work.

Sylvia Hebell, Matthew's stepmother said, "One of our greatest moments was when Matt came home from leave in Iraq."

But one of his greatest accomplishments was for his father, who was forced to drop out of school to fight in the Vietnam War. During a 2-week leave from Iraq, Matthew helped his father finally get a high school diploma.

"That's just the kind of guy Matt was that was the first thing he did when he came home on leave," Sylvia said.

His father was looking forward to one thing this summer walking, hand in hand, with his son, another veteran during a parade.

David Hebell will still take that walk and his son, will no doubt, be right there with him.

“I was very fortunate that I had a son like him," David said.

Matthew's father said he enjoyed working with the older veterans at the home in Batavia. A spokesperson for the veterans home said this is a devastating loss and their hearts are broken.

Matthew Hebell will be buried with full military honors on Wednesday. Calling hours are Tuesday from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the McAndrew Funeral Home in Batavia.
