Veteran committed suicide at Mishawaka VA parking lot

Suicide in Mishawaka VA parking lot puts spotlight on veteran mental health crisis
WSBT 22 News

August 24th 2018

A veteran shot himself yesterday in the parking lot of the VA Health Care Center in Mishawaka -- dead from an apparent suicide.

We often don't report suicide, but this is not about drawing attention to an individual. Rather, we are hoping to raise awareness and help people who are struggling.

This is an issue that impacts people and families every day.

The rest of the report is good and they interviewed a Vietnam veteran offering hope in the battle against PTSD. The problem is, what they got wrong to start off the report.

Yet again, reporters repeated the number "22" and yet again, we have to endure yet another shameful reminder that another veteran was failed. Failed by all of us because reporters did not care enough to investigate anything for real.

Well, it turns out that while they keep repeating "22 veterans a day commit suicide" the fact is, no one knows how many and we proved it! The VA says they used CDC data but even the CDC does not know how many Americans have committed suicide! Yes, that is right. They are missing data from 10 states.

NO ONE KNOWS HOW MANY MORE VETERANS HAVE COMMITTED SUICIDE!

Add this one to the following public suicides!

How much louder to they have to scream?

Last year veterans were facing off with law enforcement almost every week, maybe even more, but while these reports should have been national news, they were ignored.

Oh well, it is just so much easier to just use a number as if that is supposed to make any difference to the men and women screaming for help to stay alive.

When veterans commit suicide in a very public way, that is exactly what it is. Oh, not help for themselves. They have already made up their minds it is too late for them. They are screaming for someone to do something to help the other veterans! Like these;

"Whether that is three years or four years or 10, as long as I can make a difference every day, and I know I am making a difference every day, and I can serve my country in an operational function -- I'm gonna stick around."
Navy Master Chief Raina Hockenberry remembers everything from that day in 2014 when an Afghan soldier shot her five times.

She was serving as the senior enlisted leader position for Combined Security Transition Command Afghanistan. Hockenberry was part of a group visiting a basic training facility for Afghan soldiers.

We stopped for our last briefing of the day, and one of the Afghan soldiers just opened fire through a window," she told reporters at the Pentagon Wednesday describing the green-on-blue attack that wounded 13 other military personnel that day. "He just started shooting."

Hockenberry suffered two gunshot wounds to the right leg, shattering her tibia. She was shot once in the groin and twice in the stomach.

While at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, "people tended to assume that I would be medically retired; I can understand why, but I just didn't see it."

Four years later, she won eight gold medals in the recent Warrior Games in Colorado Springs and now serves on the USS Port Royal at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

In four months, she plans to participate in the Invictus Games in Sydney, Australia.

Marine with untreated PTSD shot neighbors TV?

Alleged shooter of TV is veteran with PTSD, prosecutors say

The Darrington man, a former Marine, appears to be struggling with mental health issues.
EVERETT — A Darrington man appears to have been wrestling with mental challenges and substance abuse before he allegedly forced his way into his neighbors’ home March 19 and shot a big-screen television.

Lance “Doug” Cochran, 36, was the man in the mask who broke into a house in the 6200 block of 473rd Drive NE and opened fire, deputy prosecutor Andrew Alsdorf said in Snohomish County Superior Court documents. Cochran is now charged with second-degree assault and first-degree burglary, both felonies.

Cochran served in the Marine Corps from 1999 through 2008. He’s been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder for two years but has not sought treatment, Alsdorf wrote.

The defendant’s family and friends say he became unstable and violent after a death in his family and an unwelcome job reassignment. He stopped going to work, “drank beer all day long” and used methamphetamine with a neighbor.
