Two Veteran Police Officers Killed Over Weekend
Monday, March 14, 2011 - 02:47 PM
By WNYC Newsroom

Two NYPD officers with more than a decade of experience were killed in the line of duty last weekend. One was pushed over a railing and tumbled to his death on a leafy street in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. The second was fatally shot by an MTA officer on Long Island after a confrontation with a knife-wielding man. The suspect was also killed.

In Brooklyn, officers responded to a domestic violence call early Sunday morning. As officer Alain Schaberger, 42, prepared to take the suspect into custody he was shoved over a railing in front of the brownstone and tumbled down a concrete stairway to the basement. The nine-foot fall broke his neck.

Two cops dead, U.S. marshal shot in St. Petersburg FL

Two cops dead, U.S. marshal shot trying to arrest suspect in St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg shooting comes four days after two Miami-Dade detectives were shot dead
ST. PETERSBURG, Florida — A man hiding in the attic of a home sparked an intense firefight with authorities trying to arrest him on a warrant Monday morning, killing two officers and wounding a deputy U.S. Marshal, police said.

St. Petersburg Police Chief Chuck Harmon said more than 100 rounds were fired during the shootout, which was the latest in a recent rash of shootings across the nation that have killed or wounded law enforcement officers.

The officers had come to arrest Hydra Lacy Jr., 39, on an aggravated battery charge, and investigators think he is the one who opened fire on the officers, police spokesman Michael Puetz said. He said Lacy had a long record that includes convictions for armed robbery and sexual battery.

As of midday, the shooter was still barricaded inside the home, police said.

"He was somebody we wanted to get off the streets, " Harmon said. "Who expects to walk into a house and get gunfire from the attic?"

Harmon would not identify the dead officers pending notification of their relatives.

A third trapped firefighter was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died.

The fourth firefighter buried in the rubble, and as many as 12 other firefighters with undisclosed injuries, were also taken to hospitals. Fire officials and sources said 10 were stable and six were taken to hospitals in serious to critical condition, including the two who later died.

Marine and Deputy Sheriff Brandon Coates killed in the line of duty

Slain Deputy Brandon Coates laid to rest
By Kelli Cook and Jacqueline Fell, Team Coverage
ORLANDO
Thousands from all over the country gathered to say goodbye to fallen Orange County Deputy Brandon Coates Tuesday.

Coates, 27, was killed Dec. 8 during a traffic stop near Orange Blossom Trail.

Friends, family, and a huge law enforcement turnout packed the First Baptist Church of Orlando.

Hundreds of people in the Orange County community and beyond showed up Tuesday to pay tribute to Coates at a public viewing, also at First Baptist Orlando.

Coates was also a war veteran, and those in the community said his death is a loss for all of Central Florida.

"I myself have three young boys at home,” said Cpl. Scott Jenny from the Orange County Sheriff's Office. “I hope and pray they grow to be just like Brandon one day."

"Brandon was a warrior," said Deputy Robert Ricks.
Those who gathered to say goodbye said Coates was among the best law enforcement has to offer.

Having survived two tours in Iraq as a Marine, it was a local criminal who took his life in a traffic stop.

Friends and family celebrated his life, and his love for his wife Virginia.

"There never before seen such unfaltering love and there's no doubt in my mind they belonged to each other," said Deputy Brian Hummel, Coates’ best friend.

Deputy Brandon Coates, who served as a U.S. Marine, was shot and killed while patrolling one of Orange County's most dangerous areas — a neighborhood near South Orange Blossom Trail known for violent crimes, drugs, prostitution and murder.

"Deputy Sheriff Brandon Coates was indeed a hero and one of the best deputies we have here in this agency," Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said today.

Officials said accused gunman Brandon Lyals shot the 27-year-old deputy in the head twice after Coates pulled over Lyals' white truck near Nashville Avenue and 45th Street at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

"What we now know is that there was some kind of struggle, or circumstance that caused Deputy Coates to fire his Taser," Demings said. "At some point, Deputy Sheriff Coates was shot in the head twice and succumbed to his injuries after being transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where the trauma team worked on him diligently."

Tampa's police community relieved by arrest

(CNN) -- Hours after the arrest of a suspect, thousands of friends, family and fellow officers gathered Saturday to pay tribute to two slain Florida policemen.

An emotional funeral unfolded inside a Tampa church as suspect Dontae Morris, arrested on Friday, appeared in court for the first time. He was denied bond, CNN affiliate Bay News 9 reported, and is being held at the Hillsborough County Jail.

Morris surrendered after a third party tipped off police, said Police Chief Jane Castor. Police also arrested 22-year-old Cortnee Brantly, the woman believed to have been driving the car at the time of the shooting, Castor said.

The arrests came after a massive manhunt and were a relief, Castor said. They meant the department would be able to provide officers Jeffrey Kocab and David Curtis with the honorable tribute they deserve, Castor said.

"This has brought us a sense of closure, and I pray the arrest brings a level of peace to the families of the officers," she said.

Phoenix police officer fatally shot
By BOB CHRISTIE (AP) – 6 hours ago

PHOENIX — A Phoenix police officer shot and killed early Wednesday while investigating a suspicious vehicle was a 29-year-old married father of two young children, authorities said.

Officer Travis Murphy's wife had given birth just two weeks ago to the couple's second child, police spokesman Sgt. Trent Crump said.

Murphy and his partner were first on the scene of a call where neighbors reported someone hit a parked car and was trying to hide a Ford Mustang in the carport of a vacant home. The officers got out of their patrol vehicle and split up in search of a suspect.

Moments later, shots were fired and Murphy's partner found him mortally wounded. Fellow officers put him in a police vehicle and sped him to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead.

Suspects in police shooting killed in West Memphis shootout
Posted: May 20, 2010 1:17 PM EDT

WEST MEMPHIS, AR (WMC-TV) - Two West Memphis police officers were shot and killed Thursday during a traffic stop along a busy cross-country interstate highway. The local sheriff and his chief deputy were wounded in a later shootout that left a pair of suspects dead.

Officers pulled over a white minivan with Ohio license plates while "running drug interdiction" on Interstate 40 in east Arkansas, said West Memphis Police Inspector Bert Shelton. Two men got out of the van with the assault rifles and opened fire on the officers, he said.

Sgt. Brandon Paudert, 39, the son of West Memphis' police chief, died at the scene and Officer Bill Evans, 38, died at a hospital, authorities said. Evans made the initial stop, and Paudert arrived moments later as backup, Assistant Police Chief Mike Allen said late Thursday.

"In what was probably only a few minutes, Officer Evans was shoved to the ground and the men in the minivan started shooting at both officers," Allen said.

Additionally, Crittenden County Sheriff Dick Busby and a deputy, W. A. Wren, were shot and wounded. Both men were taken by helicopter to The MED.

Ian Deutch survived a recent tour of duty in Afghanistan but killed as a cop in Nevada

National guard commander sees tragic irony in Nevada deputy's slaying after Afghanistan tour

KEN RITTER

Associated Press Writer

April 27, 2010 5:35 p.m.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Ian Deutch survived a recent tour of duty in Afghanistan, identifying Taliban targets for artillery strikes. But he didn't make it through his second day back on the job as a rural Nevada sheriff's deputy.

Deutch was gunned down Monday by a man wielding an assault rifle in a casino parking lot about 60 miles west of Las Vegas. The death of the decorated Nevada Army National Guardsman and law enforcement veteran left those who knew him stunned Tuesday.

"The irony of spending a year overseas in a combat zone and then to come back and have this happen is, you know, tragic," said Lt. Col. Scott Cunningham, a Las Vegas resident and commanding officer of Deutch's guard unit.

Deutch, 27, a staff sergeant, and his older brother, Richard Deutch, a master sergeant, were among 752 soldiers with the 1st Squadron, 221st Calvary who returned home in March. Some members of the Wildhorse squadron suffered casualties but none was killed during their assignment in Afghanistan's Laghman province.

Ian Deutch was a meritorious service medal winner, a squad leader and a forward artillery observer who identified Taliban targets for artillery strikes outside combat outpost Nagil, Cunningham said.

"He's one of those guys, his full-time job is a police officer and his part-time job is a soldier," Cunningham told The Associated Press. "He's always been out there trying to help people and make a contribution to society.

Police officer, Army Veteran, killed in the line of duty

9-year veteran of suburban force 'meant a lot to so many people'
Police officer's death deeply affects peers on his force and around metro area.

By MIKE KASZUBA, Star Tribune

Last update: September 7, 2009 - 10:30 PM

He was a grandfather, a U.S. Army veteran and had a wife who had once worked as a reserve officer on the same North St. Paul police force he worked on. He was a "fantastic person" with a sense of humor who led his department's motorcycle squad, the police chief said.

On a sunny Monday, he began a holiday shift at 7 a.m. Ninety minutes later Richard Crittenden, 57, who had spent nine years on the 19-member suburban police force, was dead.

The Maplewood police officer who had assisted Crittenden on a call to check a possible violation of a domestic protection order was wounded. And a 34-year-old suspect with a lengthy criminal record whom they had struggled with -- and who presumably shot Crittenden -- had also been killed.

(CNN) -- Flags were being lowered to half-staff Monday in Buffalo, New York, after two firefighters died inside a fire-engulfed building, city officials said.

The firefighters were responding to reports that at least one person was trapped in the building.

"Today is a very tragic day in the city of Buffalo," Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said at a news conference. "Our hearts are broken right now, and we are all saddened by this terrible tragedy."

The cause of the blaze is under investigation, and the remains of the building are being searched to determine if anyone else perished inside, Buffalo Fire Commissioner Michael Lombardo said.

Emergency officials received a call around 3:50 a.m. that "someone [was] banging on a wall and calling for help" from inside the burning building, Lombardo said. Video footage showed the top level of the two-story brick building fully engulfed in flames. A convenience store was on the building's first floor.

TAMPA — In families whose daily lives orbit a gun and a badge, mothers and fathers looked long and hard at their children this week.

It was the other identity of slain Tampa police Cpl. Mike Roberts — as a husband and the father of a 3-year-old boy — that has magnified the grief and shock felt by other police families.

Police officers and their spouses can't help but ask: Is it worth it?

Many have posted their fears on the leoaffairs.com law enforcement Web site: "This is the reality we and our families face each and every day, 365, 24/7," said one posting, signed "Tampa PD Wife."

At the Tampa police headquarters Friday, near a mountain of flowers left by mourners, two spouses of Tampa officers — one a husband, the other a wife — talked about the fears they've fought and about the long looks they've given their kids.

One thing they emphasized: You don't ask your husband or wife to quit. You don't make them choose between family or job. You may think it in weeks like this one, but you don't ask it.

EL CENTRO, CALIF. -- A Border Patrol agent who was slain in a rugged, remote area along the Mexican border was buried today after being remembered as a gregarious family man who dreamed that his 2-year-old son would follow in his footsteps.

About 4,000 people attended a memorial service for Robert Rosas, 30, who was found dead with bullet wounds to his head and body on the night of July 23 in Campo, about 60 miles east of San Diego. People crowded the aisles of Southwest High School's theater, and many agents arrived too late to get even a glimpse of the service on closed-circuit television in the adjoining gym.
