Iraq veteran amputee refuses to give up helping people

Army veteran refuses to let loss of legs keep him from riding
FOX 13 News
by Mark Green
September 15, 2013

WEST POINT, Utah – A local Army veteran always dreamed of riding motorcycles, even after he had both of his legs amputated following an explosion in Iraq.

Darrell Isaac Jensen joined the Army in 2005 and became a medic.

“At a young age I was really introduced to it,” he said. “Helping people is something that I’ve always wanted to do. I really thought that’s what I want to do ultimately: I want to help people.”

And even when an explosion took his legs from him, Jensen remained focused on helping others.

“I got blown up on November 9, 2008,” he said. “Three of us walk into a building, and one of my buddies opened up a refrigerator and it went boom. And I assisted, I put tourniquets on people with one hand, and then I put two on one guy, I gave them all my morphine, and then took care of myself. It was definitely an interesting experience.”

“It was gone,” Davidson said.

Davidson joined the Army in 1991 and during deployments to Iraq from 2003-2005 he sustained several injuries, including being struck by an I.E.D.

MILLBROOK, AL (WSFA)
A welcome home gift for a soldier serving in Afghanistan is now missing, stolen from the family's yard. The brightly colored motorcycle was supposed to be waiting for David Langdon when he returned from fighting, but right now his wife says the motorcycle she bought and parked behind her house, has vanished.

Now, she's asking the public to help police find it.

Shannon Langdon says her husband is heartbroken about the theft. After years of wanting a bike, and Mrs. Langdon saying, "No, it's too dangerous..." she finally gave in to his persistence.

"He never wants anything, ever, he always gives to me, but he never wants anything..." Mrs. Langdon says. "And I finally said, ok you can get one..."

Langdon's wife wanted it to be waiting on him when he came home.

From the other side of the world, David picked out the bike he wanted. It was located in nearby Wetumpka. read more here

GEARY COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW) -- Nearly a year after losing his wife and children in a head-on collision, a Fort Riley soldier has been arrested in connection with several dangerous high speed motorcycle chases.

Bryan Alfred, 22, of Junction City, was the only member of his family who survived an accident last August in Marion County. He was arrested Wednesday, July 24, 2013 in connection with a series of pursuits by members of local and state law enforcement agencies in Geary County.

Alfred was taken into custody at the Fort Riley Provost Marshall’s Office on a Geary County District Court warrant charging him with Fleeing and Eluding While Engaging in Reckless Driving, and another count of Reckless Driving.
His wife, 20-year-old Amber Alfred, was killed in the crash along with the couple’s 2-year-old son, Josiah Alfred. Sources say Amber Alfred was also a Fort Riley soldier who worked as an x-ray technician at Irwin Army Community Hospital on post.

Another child, six-year-old Keith Johnson, who police also identified as the couple’s son (Bryan Alfred's stepson), was airlifted to Saint Francis Hospital in Wichita and was listed in critical condition in the days following the accident. He passed away from his injuries six days after the crash on August 16th, 2012.

Fort Hood soldiers stoked for huge motorcycle rally

Huge motorcycle rally honors veterans, spotlights safety
7th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment
Story by Sgt. Ken Scar

FORT HOOD, Texas - The growl of engines replaced the usually calm morning atmosphere on the III Corps parade field Thursday as more than 700 motorcyclists convened in front of the III Corps Headquarters building for the seventh annual Phantom Thunder Mentorship Ride. The event attracted riders of all kinds of motorcycles, from fat Harley Davidsons to sleek sport bikes. Lined up and parked two to three deep before the ride began, the sea of polished chrome and carbon fiber stretched around the entire paved half-mile running loop.

Coordinated by the 89th Military Police Brigade, the event is held each year to demonstrate to the community Fort Hood’s commitment to motorcycle safety.

“I’m stoked for this,” said Spc. Cheyn Turberville, of Citrus Hills, Cali., a Soldier with 1st Brigade, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, as he was checking the ride route on a huge map that was hung over the side of a Light Medium Tactical Vehicle. “I’ve never done a ride this big. It’s cool to see all the bikes, and it’s way cooler than doing our regular duties.”

“We get to ride motorcycles during the duty day! How can you complain about that?” said Command Sgt. Maj. Peter Ladd, the brigade Command Sergeant Major for the 89th Military Police Brigade. “This is a chance for all the Soldiers, all the family members, and all the civilians that work and play on Fort Hood to get together and promote motorcycle awareness.”

Veteran finds calling in rescuing missing children

For the greater good: Veteran finds calling in rescuing missing children
By Kelley Chambers
Published: Wednesday, November 7, 2012

Desert Storm veteran Chuck Foreman's most pivotal rescue mission didn't take place in the wilderness of Iraq. It was for a friend whose 16-year-old daughter had run off with a 40-year-old man suspected of drugging her.

The police couldn't help because she had gone willingly, Foreman said.

With just his Harley and his iPhone, the Austin resident was able to help get the girl home safely. It was at that moment he began developing a commitment to finding more like her, vowing never to charge a dime for his services.

Photos courtesy of Chuck Foreman – With a background in electronic surveillance, U.S. Army veteran Chuck Foreman is using his combat experience to help recover missing children across the U.S.
Since that day, Foreman is credited for recovering more than 20 children.

"The more you get into this missing kid thing, the more it opens your eyes to it," Foreman said. "It's a very dangerous world for children."

Using his military know-how and a desire to continue protecting those he has served, Foreman formed the Center for Search and Investigations (CFSI) two years ago. Comprised strictly of volunteers, the organization assists in the search for missing children by building a network of "ready to ride" bikers across the nation. The organization also helps in the distribution and collection of information during the search for a missing child, and raises awareness of this growing epidemic.

Honor guard: Procession of veterans, motorcycles escort Traveling Tribute Vietnam Wall
By MATT KOESTERS
September 13, 2012

Motorcyclists congregate in the front parking lot of S & S Powersports in Clarksville as they wait to escort the American Veterans Traveling Tribute Vietnam Wall on a tour of the area on Wednesday evening.

CLARKSVILLE — Pearl Pearson of New Albany may not have worn the uniform, but she served the military during the Vietnam War. She’s one of the countless military wives that stayed behind while her husband fought in Southeast Asia, thousands of miles from home. She raised her three daughters and took care of the family finances while her husband was away.

“We’d get on the ground, put our knees down and put our heads down and pray beside the bed that their daddy and all the men and women would get back safe from the war,” Pearson recalled.

On Wednesday, Pearson was among the throng of supporters stationed along Veterans Parkway in Clarksville as an estimated 1,000 motorcycles and other vehicles escorted the American Veterans Traveling Tribute Vietnam Wall to the grounds outside of the Clarksville Municipal Building.

Secret Millionaire Jacobs brought to tears by homeless veterans

How could a guy that loves Harley's go wrong? After all, with all the motorcycle groups doing good work for veterans, I had a feeling this guy would have his heart tugged more by homeless veterans than anything else. I was right.

I don't usually watch the show but once I heard homeless veterans would be one of the causes, I had to watch and I ended up crying.

Last night ABC Secret Millionaire was Scott Jacobs and his daughter Alexa.
One of the places they went to was G.I. Go Transition Center in New Jersey.

G.I. Go Veterans Transition Center
The transition center was founded after a friend of the men behind the place was killed in Iraq six years ago. They help veterans adjust to life when they get back home. Scott and Alexa take part in a training session for a midnight mission to search for homeless veterans. Alexa meets Ray, a Vietnam vet who suffers from PTSD. Scott is overwhelmed to see his daughter being so courageous so far out of her comfort zone.

Scott and Alexa take part in a "Stand Down" event which provides food, clothing and medical assistance to homeless veterans and their families. They meet the mother of Seth Dvorin, the 24-year-old who saved 18 men in Iraq.

The G.I. Go fund exists to keep his memory alive. Seth's friends don't take a salary, they live at home and they barely scrape by. Scott wants to help them out right away. He presents the organization with a check for $75,000. Tears of joy stream down the face of Seth's mother. His friends are speechless. As for Scott and Alexa, they leave the place with smiles on their faces that will last the rest of the day.

If you ever want to find a reason to like rich people again, this show will do it. They are not all greedy and out for themselves. It was easy to see how much Scott and daughter Alexa cared about these homeless veterans.

Jacobs couldn't even wait for the next day to hand them the check once he decided to donate to them. He said another day is one more day they cannot help. Lord I wish I could have given him a hug when he handed the check to them!

GI Go Fund and Mayor Cory Booker Announce the Nationwide Launch of “Midnight Missions” for Homeless Veterans, as seen on the Season Premiere of ABC’s “Secret Millionaire”

Sunday, June 3rd 2012
GI Go Fund Executive Director Jack Fanous and Newark Mayor Cory Booker will reach out to homeless vets in Philadelphia, PA, Baltimore, MD, and Washington, DC. Announcement comes during a screening of the Season Premiere of ABC’s “Secret Millionaire”, highlighting the GI Go Fund’s work with homeless veterans.
Newark, NJ (PRWEB) June 03, 2012

GI Go Fund Executive Director Jack Fanous and Mayor Cory A. Booker announced that they will conduct nationwide “Midnight Missions” for homeless veterans, a comprehensive effort spreading through several major cities that will provide veterans who have the misfortune of living on the streets with critical services that will help them find a home. The "Midnight Missions" will reach the cities of Philadelphia, PA, Baltimore, MD, and Washington, DC.

The announcement came during a live screening of the Season Premiere of ABC’s “Secret Millionaire”, which shows millionaires concealing their identity while volunteering with nonprofit groups as they assist people in their community. The first episode of the season highlighted the work that the GI Go Fund does with the homeless veteran population, specifically their “Midnight Missions”, where volunteers go out at 4:00 am to areas densely populated with homeless veterans, including Newark Penn Station and Newark Liberty International Airport, to provide them with food, clothes, emergency medical assistance from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), as well as to collect information critical to help homeless veterans get off the street and into a home of their own.

The episode also featured the GI Go Fund’s “Stand Down for Homeless Veterans”, which provides homeless veterans with food, clothing, medical screenings from the VA, legal assistance, haircuts, and connections to housing opportunities. Following these events, the organization was awarded a $75,000 donation by “Secret Millionaire” and acclaimed Harley Davidson artist Scott Jacobs and his daughter, Alexa.

LONGWOOD – A Seminole County deputy sheriff who died in the line of duty last month was remembered today for his service to community.

About 2,000 people — many of them law enforcement officers from around the Southeast U. S. — attended the funeral for Deputy Matt Miller. Also in attendance were Gov. Rick Scott and state Attorney General Pam Bondi.

The service at Northland, A Church Distributed, ran almost an hour longer than expected and was followed by a lengthy procession to Oakland Park Cemetery in Lake Mary.

Miller, 53, was killed Dec. 26 at the intersection of Maitland Boulevard and Gateway Drive when his motorcycle collided with a car while he was trying to catch up to a speeding vehicle.

"The Seminole County Sheriff's Office is a better organization and the community is safer because of the efforts of Matt,'' Seminole County Sheriff Don Eslinger said during the service.

A Hero Is Welcomed Home
Oct 11, 2011

Private First Class Ian Edge of Brinson Georgia received a hero's welcome home on Sunday afternoon. Ian was critically injured in Afghanistan on June 25th when he stepped on an IED (Improvised Explosive Device). He now walks with a prosthetic leg and is working to regain full use of one hand.

A tremendous welcome awaited PFC Edge as he drove in from Florida and greeted in Chattahoochee by over 100 people and law enforcement to escort him home. The Deep South Riders pulled together probably a hundred bikers that proudly led the way bringing him home.

Florida law enforcement led the group out of Florida on Highway 97 where Decatur County Sheriff's Deputies and Decatur County Fire took over. Georgia State Patrol took the lead as the procession neared Bainbridge and led him on to Brinson. Along the way, citizens waited by the road to salute him with signs and American flags waving.

A motorcycle belonging to a disabled veteran who recently returned to the United States after tours in the Middle East has reportedly been stolen.

Ben Davidson, a disabled veteran now living in Arizona, completed three combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. But Davidson's only mode of transportation was nowhere to be found when he returned to his north Phoenix apartment, MyFoxPhoenix.com reports.

“We both have to work and take his daughter to school, and somehow we’ve got to get everybody to where they need to be, and it's hard,” Davidson's wife, Wendy, told the website.

"I think it's cowardly, you know, that they would take a bike like that," Davidson said. "It hurts."

OCALA - He told sheriff's deputies he had just come from the restaurant "Hooters" when they stopped him on his motorcycle.

The problem was, he was completely naked.

Captain Mike Rolls was driving along Highway 200 in Marion County early Tuesday morning, when he saw something that made him do a double take.

It was 45-year-old Dante Kraus, naked and driving a motorcycle.

Captain Mike Rolls with the Marion County Sheriff's Office says,

"You could see from his feet which were bare, all the way up to his shoulders that he didn't have any clothing on."

Even after Captain Rolls drove up beside the naked Kraus, he didn't appear to be concerned, but instead jumped on the I-75.

Police officer, Army Veteran, killed in the line of duty

9-year veteran of suburban force 'meant a lot to so many people'
Police officer's death deeply affects peers on his force and around metro area.

By MIKE KASZUBA, Star Tribune

Last update: September 7, 2009 - 10:30 PM

He was a grandfather, a U.S. Army veteran and had a wife who had once worked as a reserve officer on the same North St. Paul police force he worked on. He was a "fantastic person" with a sense of humor who led his department's motorcycle squad, the police chief said.

On a sunny Monday, he began a holiday shift at 7 a.m. Ninety minutes later Richard Crittenden, 57, who had spent nine years on the 19-member suburban police force, was dead.

The Maplewood police officer who had assisted Crittenden on a call to check a possible violation of a domestic protection order was wounded. And a 34-year-old suspect with a lengthy criminal record whom they had struggled with -- and who presumably shot Crittenden -- had also been killed.

(09-12) 15:17 PDT DALY CITY -- Police throughout the Bay Area are bracing for the biggest show of motorcycle club members since Marlon Brando hit town in "The Wild One."

No one knows exactly how many two-wheeled mourners in leather jackets are going to attend services Sunday and Monday for the slain president of the Hells Angels' San Francisco chapter, Mark "Papa" Guardado.

Some say there could be 1,000 Hells Angels, some say more.

"However many there are, we're going to be ready," said Officer Shawn Chase, spokesman for the California Highway Patrol.

Guardado, 46, was shot Sept. 2 outside a bar at 24th Street and Treat Avenue after what police described as a "wrestling match" with the gunman, who fled on a motorcycle. Christopher Ablett, 37, of Modesto, a member of the rival Mongols Motorcycle Club, is wanted on suspicion of murder.
