SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - Three men and a woman were found shot dead in an apparent murder-suicide at a home near San Diego after shooting broke out in the early hours of New Year's Day, police said.

Authorities in Coronado, a tony island enclave off the coast of San Diego, were called to a condo shortly after 2 a.m. on Sunday to investigate a report of shots fired at the residence, sheriff's Lieutenant Larry Nesbit said

Fort Bragg soldier killed wife, himself

Hoke sheriff says Fort Bragg soldier killed wife, himself Saturday night in Raeford

By James Halpin
Staff writer
Dec 14, 2011

RAEFORD - Family members say Staff Sgt. Seth Andrews and his wife, Hillary, spent Saturday preparing for Christmas, offering no hint of trouble brewing between them.

Then a neighbor passing by their home in the 100 block of Patolly Place around midnight Saturday saw their door was open, looked inside and found their bodies.

Investigators are calling it a murder-suicide.

It appears that Seth Andrews, a 24-year-old Fort Bragg-based soldier who returned from Iraq just weeks ago, shot his wife in the upper body with a .30-06 rifle before fatally shooting himself, Hoke County Sheriff Hubert Peterkin said.

There were no signs of a struggle and it appeared the shooting had just happened minutes earlier, he said.

Deployed soldier learns of In-laws deaths in Oregon

Daughter says elderly Troutdale couple in apparent murder-suicide died in bed, side-by-side
Published: Friday, October 07, 2011

By Sally Ho, The Oregonian

TROUTDALE -- On Friday, the only child of Ed and Frances Lopes called their deaths "an act of desperation."

"It's a statement to society about people who fall through the cracks," Louise Lopes, 51, said.

The lives of her parents, ended Thursday with gunshot wounds to their heads in what authorities believe was a murder-suicide. They would have been married 64 years this month.

Police say that at about 11 a.m. Thursday, Ed Lopes, 87, called Troutdale police to say he had shot his wife, 92-year-old Frances. When police arrived at their home and there was no response, the Gresham-East Multnomah County SWAT Team was called to the home on Southwest Larsson Avenue. Neighbors said their homes were evacuated until about 3 p.m.

Louise Lopes was at home in Mulino when officials arrived around 8:45 p.m. to say her parents were dead, side-by-side in their bed. Louise said her father did not own a gun but may have come to her house for one while she was away at work because her husband's pistol is missing. Her husband, Gary Evans, is in the military and was headed home to Oregon from Afghanistan because of the deaths.

Police: Veteran officer shot wife, then self

Police: Veteran officer shot wife, then self
CAROL ROBINSON, The Birmingham News
Published 11:50 a.m., Thursday, September 8, 2011

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Police detective Rodney Wilson and his wife of two years, Uteva, had their difficulties, but family members said they never expected those troubles to end in murder-suicide.

"I knew in the past they had problems and I told him and her that we all have financial worries," said Sharon Woods, Uteva Wilson's mother. "I talked to Rodney Saturday and he was concerned about things. I said, 'I have bills too. Do what you can, even if it's $1, and leave the rest to God.'"

"He always stressed that he loved her," Woods said Wednesday. "I never thought he would take her life."

Police said that's exactly what happened.

The 41-year-old detective apparently shot his 23-year-old wife and then got on his police radio and warned he was about to take his own life.

He told dispatchers he had killed his wife, but that the children were OK. He asked for paramedics and a supervisor to come to the scene, and then said, "I won't be here when you get here," authorities said.

Wilson, a nearly 11-year veteran of the Birmingham force who served in the burglary unit, used his service weapon in shooting, authorities said.

"Mr. Davis was receiving some news about the care and condition of his mother just outside the doorway to that room when he became emotionally distraught," Bealefeld said.

Florida Highway Patrol Trooper and wife die in "apparent murder-suicide"

Married for 29 years. On the force since 1988. The officer and his wife were both 48. How do you go from putting your life on the line everyday for that many years, shared with a wife you've spent over half your life with, raised children with, cried and laughed with, and then decide to take her life plus your own? Something had to have happened to lead to this. That is what we cannot dismiss.

Neighbors and family members remain perplexed Sunday about a murder/suicide in a quiet neighborhood west of DeLand.

Volusia County sheriff's investigators on Sunday released the names of the shooter and his 42-year-old victim -- the daughter of an ex-girlfriend -- in the shooting on Carr Street in the Glenwood community, but have not said why it occurred, according to sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught.

What they do know is Richard Danao, 57, of Grand Avenue went to the home of Sarah Hille, shot and killed her before turning the gun on himself shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday.

Hille's mother, Barbara Jane Price, 70, and the victim's 5-month-old daughter were in the residence at the time of the shooting, but neither was injured.

Two veterans dead after double murder and suicide

Man shoots himself after killing wife, son
By Ariel Barkhurst and Valentinio Lucio
San Antonio Express-News

Three people are dead after a double murder-suicide Saturday morning in which an elderly man shot and killed his wife and adult son before turning the gun on himself at the breakfast table of their Monte Vista home, authorities said.

Police Chief William McManus said that the man, who was in his late 70s to early 80s, called police dispatch at around 9:15 a.m. to report the shootings.

“He told the dispatcher, ‘There's been two homicides and there's about to be a suicide,'” McManus said.

Before the man hung up, he told the dispatcher he was going to “finish himself off,” according to a police report.

Police found the man, along with his elderly wife and 53-year-old son, in the kitchen of their home on the 200 block of East Summit Avenue. The son was lying face down on the floor and it appeared he was shot in the back of his head, while his mother was found slumped over in a chair at the breakfast table with a gunshot wound to the mouth, the police report states. The father was found on the floor with a black revolver nearby.

Other neighbors said the father was a retired Air Force colonel and that the son also retired from the military.

CANTON — Derrick Busto left two small children when he was shot to death Sunday morning in Jackson Township by the ex-husband of the woman he was dating.

His younger child, a son, is 2. His other child is an 8-year-old daughter, Harmony, who still doesn’t comprehend that her father is gone, said the girl’s mother, Kelly Henson, who’s also Busto’s ex-wife.

“I don’t think she understands right now. She hasn’t said much about it,” Henson, of Canton, said Tuesday. “She keeps asking if her daddy is OK.”

She said Busto was a good father who last summer helped coach their daughter’s softball team.

(CNN) -- Soccer mom Melanie Hain, who made national headlines last year by having a loaded, holstered handgun at her 5-year-old daughter's soccer game, has been found shot dead in her home along with her husband, police said Thursday.

Information from 911 calls shows that it took a SWAT team nearly an hour and a half to gain entry to the Lebanon, Pennsylvania, home Wednesday evening. Inside, they found the bodies of Hain, 31, and her husband, Scott, 33, police Capt. Daniel Wright said.

Police have avoided labeling the incident a murder-suicide. However, they do not believe that another person was involved, Wright said. A full investigation is under way, he added.

"Who [Melanie Hain] is does not change the course of this investigation," he said. The autopsies are scheduled for Friday.

PALM COAST— A domestic disturbance escalated into gunfire as a man chased his wife through a Palm Coast neighborhood this morning, eventually shooting and killing her before he died of a gunshot wound himself.

Officials are calling it “an apparent murder-suicide,” but they acknowledge the fatal shot that killed the husband may have come from a neighbor’s gun. The wife sought shelter at a nearby home and the homeowner returned fire at the husband.

Flagler County sheriff’s investigators are trying to untangle the incident, which began just after 7:00 a.m. in front of a house on Reynolds Place, with the first 9-1-1 calls coming in to Sheriff’s dispatchers at approximately 7:15 a.m.

“We’re still trying to put all the pieces together,” said Sheriff’s Maj. David O’Brien.

So far, investigators said they believe the couple was estranged, living in separate houses

Two decades in the Army, woman wondered why no one helped her before she died

She said she had served her country, and she didn't know why nobody would help her.

How many others are left to wonder the same thing? What did they do wrong? They not only worked for their living, this wife served the country for two decades in the Army. Everything they worked for was gone and now their lives are. According to this report, the police are not saying who shot who but that doesn't really matter because this never should have happened.

Julie Fay, neighbors said, worked at Fort Belvoir and at pharmacies. Army records show that Fay, 56, retired in 2001 after two decades in the service. She spent six years serving in Germany and received commendation medals, achievement medals, a national defense service medal and a sharpshooter marksmanship qualification badge with grenade bar, officials said.

Couple Shot in Murder-Suicide, Police Say
Home in Dumfries Had Been Lost, and Husband's Job Transfer Had Fallen Through
By Maria Glod and Meg Smith
Washington Post Staff Writers
Saturday, August 22, 2009

Wallis and Julie Fay said life seemed to be closing in on them. They lost the Prince William County home, where they lived for more than 15 years, to foreclosure. Eviction was looming. And on Tuesday, Wallis Fay learned that the job transfer he was counting on had fallen through.

"He said: 'I don't know what to do. I'm at my last straw,' " said Bernice Fortune, a neighbor who answered a call from a shaken Wallis Fay just before 10 p.m. Tuesday. "I said: 'Hold on to your faith. Hand it over to God.' "

Fortune, who was at a prayer group at a nearby IHOP, promised to call when she got home. There was no answer at the Fays a half-hour later. Assuming they had gone to sleep, Fortune left a prayer on their answering machine.

But by then, Fortune said, the couple might have been dead.

Prince William police ruled that the Fays were shot to death in a murder-suicide. Police are not revealing who pulled the trigger or why, but friends are blaming the tragedy on the stress and upheaval of financial turmoil. Property records show their red-brick townhouse was foreclosed on in June.

"She came to me and said the bank had took their house from them," recalled Abigail Robertson, a neighbor who had been helping the couple pack. "She seemed stressed out. She said all this moving, it was too much for her. She said she had served her country, and she didn't know why nobody would help her."

NEW PORT RICHEY — After Richard Owen, his elderly mother and their pet chihuahua didn't venture outside their home for several days, one of their neighbors placed a call to the authorities.

People were getting worried.

"We got called out on a welfare check," said Kevin Doll, a spokesman for the Pasco County Sheriff's Office. "The neighbors hadn't seen them in a few days and they started to smell decay."

When deputies arrived at the home at 4455 Grandwood Lane Saturday night, the neighbors' worst fears were confirmed: Owen and his 87-year-old mother, Joan Owen, were both dead inside, apparently of a murder-suicide.

Preliminary information indicates Richard Owen, 62, killed his mother and the dog, and then fatally shot himself. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death for Joan Owen.
