Mom: Military needs to stop soldier suicides

Mom: Military needs to stop soldier suicides
WRAL.com

LILLINGTON, N.C. — U.S. troops committed suicide at a rate of roughly one a day in the first five months of this year, according to the Pentagon. Lillington resident Angie Selvia knows the sad statistics. She lost her daughter and soldier son-in-law on Feb. 4.

“It was the worst thing I’ve ever had to deal with in my life,” she said.

The Pembertons’ tragedy is one snapshot in the bigger picture of violence and suicide among active-duty military members.

The Pentagon reported 154 suicides among active-duty military members this year from Jan. 1 through June 3, compared with 124 killed in Afghanistan during the same period. The death toll has exasperated military leaders from Washington to Fort Bragg.

Selvia says she saw no sinister signs and felt no bad vibes last Christmas – the last time she saw her daughter, Tiffany Pemberton, and son-in-law, Jason Pemberton, 28. A little more than a month later, Jason Pemberton shot and killed his 25-year-old wife and then turned the gun on himself, committing suicide.

“She was his world, and he was her world,” Selvia said. “I really did not (see any signs) … If he had been in his right mind, he never would have done that. Never.”

Homeless man shot 2 at Maryland church, then killed himself

Police: Homeless man shot 2 at Maryland church
By DAVID DISHNEAU
Associated Press

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP) - A disgruntled homeless man fatally shot a secretary and critically wounded a priest in the office of a Maryland Episcopal church after he was turned away from the food bank because of his increasingly aggressive behavior, police said Friday.

After killing Brenda Brewington, 59, and wounding the Rev. Mary-Marguerite Kohn, 62, Douglas F. Jones killed himself with the handgun in the woods where he lived near St. Peter's Episcopal Church, about 14 miles west of Baltimore, police said.

"He's been described as argumentative and belligerent, and at some point they asked him to leave and not return. If there was a motive here, we believe that may have contributed in some way," Howard County Police Department spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn said.

Brewington, of Ellicott City, was pronounced dead Thursday evening at the church after a custodian discovered the scene and called police.

Kohn, of Halethorpe, remained in critical condition Friday afternoon at Shock Trauma in Baltimore, according to police and hospital officials. She had been co-rector of the parish since 2009 and associate rector since 2003.

The incident provoked grief, anger and prayerful reflection at the opening Friday of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland's two-day annual convention in Hunt Valley, said the Right Rev. Eugene T. Sutton, bishop of Maryland.

He said the anger was directed at a society that would let a deranged man have a handgun.

"How is it that someone as mentally unstable, and who is on the edge, mentally, how does he get a gun to wreak that havoc?" Sutton said. "And of course, it's very painful for us that that violence happened in a holy place."

Murder-suicide may have ended life of 3 tour Iraq veteran and wife

Police say ex-82nd soldier and wife from Lillington killed in Daytona Beach, Fla., murder-suicide
Feb 06, 2012
A staff report

A Harnett Central High School graduate and a former 82nd Airborne soldier were killed Saturday in Daytona Beach, Fla., in what police there called a murder-suicide.

Police found Jason Pemberton, 28, and his 25-year-old wife, Tiffany Selvia Pemberton, dead in their apartment Sunday, according to a news release. A preliminary investigation indicated Pemberton shot his wife and then himself with a rifle, the release stated.

The couple had lived in Daytona Beach for about a year.

Jason Pemberton, a native of Alabama, was a former staff sergeant with the 82nd Airborne Division. He deployed to Iraq with the 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team in 2007, according to an Army news story from that year.

Jason Pemberton served three tours in Iraq, his uncle, Darrel Pemberton, told the Daytona Beach News-Journal.

Iraq vet shoots and kills wife; himself in Daytona Beach

Police in Daytona Beach say a decorated Iraq War veteran shot and killed his young wife before turning the gun on himself.

Neighbors of the couple's apartment off of Jimmy Ann Drive thought they heard two gunshots late Saturday night, but didn't think anything was wrong Sunday morning. "When they didn't see or hear from them, they went knocked on the door, no response around 11 a.m. and they called us," says Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood.

Officers kicked in the door and found 25 year old Tiffany Pemberton dead from a gunshot wound in the living room. Her husband, 28 year old Jason Pemberton was dead in the bedroom about 10 feet away with what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head from a rifle.

"He was a man that had a big heart and he just snapped," said neighbor Rick Lang of Pemberton.

"He was highly decorated, three purple hearts, was really not happy about the way he was being treated by the V.A."

Members of Des Plaines veterans organizations remembered two colleagues this week found dead in what the Cook County Medical Examiner Thursday ruled a murder-suicide.

Police said Roger and Angelita James, 48 and 56 respectively, of the 900 block of Shady Way, Arlington Hts., both sustained gunshot wounds Wednesday. A gun was found "in close proximity to the body" at the crime scene, said Arlington Hts. Police Capt. Ken Galinski.

Mr. James was commander of Des Plaines American Legion Post 36 and a member of Des Plaines VFW Post 2992. Mrs. James was a member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary.

Arlington Hts. police conducting a welfare check with the couple's adult son found the couple dead in their home across from Forest View Educational Center Wednesday morning.

Arlington Heights couple found shot to death in home

By Matt Arado and Madhu Krishnamurthy
1/25/2012

Arlington Heights police are investigating the deaths of a husband and wife found shot to death in their home Wednesday morning.

Police discovered the bodies of Angelita James, 56, and Roger D. James, 48, about 8:40 a.m. after forcing their way into the residence on East Shady Way when no one responded to the door.

Police Sgt. Richard Kappelman said evidence collected so far was “pointing” to the shootings being a murder-suicide.

Angelita James' son met police at the residence, telling officers his mother had not shown up for work for the past two days and couldn't be reached. The vehicles of both Angelita and Roger James were parked outside the home, police said.

Inside, police found the couple in a bedroom, dead from gunshot wounds. A firearm was found inside the home, but police declined to say whether they believe it was the weapon used in the shootings.

Police said they believe the tragedy was domestic and there is no danger to the community. Autopsies are scheduled for Thursday at the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Roger James was a veteran of the Gulf War and commander of the Des Plaines American Legion Post 36, said his friend and past commander Phil Campbell. He was last seen at the Legion office on Monday.

Wyoming Army National Guard sniper kills wife then self

It's over: David Munis dead of self-inflicted gunshot wound to chest

By Cameron Mathews

cmathews@wyomingnews.com

CHEYENNE -- The Cheyenne man wanted for the sniper-style murder of his estranged wife died Tuesday night of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

Cheyenne Police Chief Bob Fecht said a ranch hand spotted David Munis earlier Tuesday evening and contacted the Albany County Command Center.

The center then contacted Albany County sheriff's deputies, who approached Munis in a Wyoming Army National Guard Black Hawk helicopter, Fecht said.

As the helicopter was landing about six miles northwest of the Rogers Canyon area near the Albany-Laramie County border, deputies watched Munis shoot himself in the chest, Fecht said.

"He had been hiding up there in a small camper," he added.

Munis, 36, was wanted by the Laramie County District Attorney's Office on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Robin Munis, 40, early Saturday morning at the Old Chicago restaurant here.

She died while singing with a band inside the restaurant.

Cheyenne Police Lt. Jeff Schulz said Munis was taken in the Black Hawk helicopter to Ivinson Memorial Hospital in Laramie. He was pronounced dead there.

"Obviously we wanted to catch him alive," Schulz said. "We didn't want him to do this to himself, but it's a relief the search is over."

David Munis' death ended a nearly four-day manhunt for the Army-trained sniper, who had been a member of the Wyoming Army National Guard since 2003.

Fort Lewis combat medic is dead after chase, wife and son found dead

Man dies from gunshot after I-5 police chase; wife, son also dead
A Fort Lewis combat medic is dead, along with his wife and 5-year-old son, in what appears to be a bizarre murder-suicide pieced together following a high-speed police chase on south Interstate 5 near Tumwater.

By Sara Jean Green and Christine Clarridge
Seattle Times staff reporters

Three members of a Joint Base Lewis-McChord family are dead after an Army combat medic killed himself and his wife, and police found the body of the couple's 5-year-old son in their Spanaway home, according to police and the military.

Authorities identified the soldier as 38-year-old David F. Stewart, who shot himself in the head as his disabled car was approached by a Washington State Patrol trooper after a high-speed chase along Interstate 5 near Tumwater, Thurston County. In the passenger seat was the body of his wife, Kristy Sampels, also 38, who also had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Autopsies are scheduled for Wednesday, said Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock.

Officials said the woman appeared to have been ill.

The child was found in the couple's home in Spanaway, Pierce County. The medical examiner identified him as Jordan Stewart. The cause of his death was not immediately released.

Sampels' 10-year-old daughter from a previous marriage initially was thought to be missing but was found safe with her father in Redmond, Ore., said sheriff's spokesman Detective Ed Troyer.

The bizarre events began just before 6 a.m., when a trooper on routine patrol clocked the driver of a silver Ford Focus going south on I-5 at 85 mph, said Trooper Guy Gill. The trooper pulled his patrol car behind the Focus and turned on his emergency lights in an attempt to pull the vehicle over, he said.

As soon as the car was stopped, the trooper saw the driver — Stewart — lift his hand to his head, a gesture followed by the sound of a gunshot, Gill said. Sampels' body was found in the passenger seat and Gill said it initially did not appear that she had been shot or injured during the collision.

Middletown soldier, wife found slain at Fort Hood

A soldier from Middletown and his wife were found shot to death in their home at Fort Hood, Texas, in an apparent murder-suicide.

Sgt. Michael Timothy Franklin, 31, and his wife, Jessie Anne Yeager-Franklin, 29, were found dead on Sunday at the massive Army post. Franklin, a decorated soldier who served two tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom, was the latest in a series of confirmed and suspected suicides at the base.

The couple leave behind a 6-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son, and their grieving families. Franklin’s mother, Beverly, awoke neighbors in her apartment complex in Middletown with her screams of grief when she was notified of the deaths of her son and daughter-in-law. “It was really sad,” said neighbor Yamaris Espinet. “It hit everybody hard to find out about that.”

Officials from the Rhode Island National Guard met with the family Wednesday and later issued a statement on their behalf, saying the couple’s families remained “inconsolable.”

“Though the family may not know the final circumstances which led to this tragedy, we are mindful and proud of Michael’s devotion to his country while volunteering for two tours in Iraq, for which he received numerous awards and decorations,” the statement read, on behalf of Beverly Franklin. “We ask for our privacy and for the public to keep both our families in their prayers at this time.”

"War is hell" - and so is the aftermath

Dealing with troubled vets crucial
Aug 26, 2010

Veterans who served in combat in Iraq or Afghanistan are offered mental health care upon re-entry to American communities, but the possibility of tragedy remains. Last Friday's double-murder and suicide by a Hawaii veteran treated for post traumatic stress disorder is an extreme example of the need for more perceptive -- even aggressive -- measures to prevent violent outbreaks.

Clayborne Conley, a former Hawaii Army National Guardsman, shot and killed acquaintance Kristine Cass and her 13-year-old daughter, Saundra, before turning the gun on himself. Conley had been afflicted with insomnia, combat nightmares, morbid ruminations, suicidal thoughts and alcohol abuse upon his return to Hawaii from deployment in Iraq in 2005, according to court records.

In the years following his discharge, Conley was convicted of misdemeanors of assault and terroristic threatening. He was acquitted by reason of insanity in January 2009 of burglary and criminal property damage after entering a stranger's apartment and throwing furniture off the lanai two years earlier. Conley was committed to the Hawaii State Hospital and released in May of this year.

There were a lot of comments left on this but this one stands out.

kamaainaintx 23 hours ago

This editorial is tragically on the mark for our family. I was in combat in Korea and 'Nam, our grandson was in Gulf War II. He took his own life three years ago after struggling with the demons of war that still were with him. He took no one 'with him' but the result was devastating to us, nonetheless. There were few signs that we saw along the way - he had been participating in a VA program where he lived - to no apparent avail.

Some have said (cruelly, we might add) that 'he must have had those propensities before he enlisted'. If so, they were well-hidden for many years. He showed no such traits. It has been said that "War is hell" - and so is the aftermath.

We encourage all who have loved ones who may struggle with PTSD to heed the warning signs (if there are any that are visible) and be proactive in getting all the counseling and assistance that may be available.

Last weekend I posted the stories from Wisconsin and Hawaii. Both about National Guardsmen coming home with PTSD and both killing others before taking their own lives.

There was a comment on this blaming Democrats as if any of this is new. All wars produced emotional damage done to other humans but someone decided that this had to be made political. Guess it didn't matter that the numbers have been going up while political hacks stuck their fingers in their ears and said this country couldn't afford to increase funding for the DOD and the VA to care for the wounded because there were "two wars to pay for" at the same time neither war was included in the Presidential budget until Obama added them in. Just a shame all the way around but if people want to turn everything into some kind of political finger pointing, they should at least know what they are talking about.

Publix shoppers witness murder of cashier and suicide of husband

Orlando Publix shooting: Records reveal deeply troubled lives
Orlando police release evidence from investigation into murder-suicide at Publix on Michigan Avenue in March. Estranged husband Andreau Yankton shot and killed wife Anicia Yankton before turning the gun on himself.

By Bianca Prieto, Orlando Sentinel

5:59 p.m. EDT, June 9, 2010

Andreau Yankton was drunk and on anxiety medication when he walked into Publix on March 2, got in the checkout line with a liter of soda and shot his wife to death.

His spouse, Anicia Yankton, was having an affair with a co-worker, a man to whom she lied about her husband and about being pregnant.

The Orlando police investigation of the public murder-suicide — Andreau Yankton left the store and fatally shot himself in the parking lot — concluded that the husband acted out because his wife was no longer coming home after work.

Although the investigation is not closed, police on Wednesday released hundreds of pages of documents from the deadly shooting, including photos and transcripts of interviews with witnesses. The records were released after the Orlando Sentinel filed a public records request.

Andreau Yankton walked to the back of the store and returned to her checkout line with a liter of soda, waiting while she assisted two people in line ahead of him. She still didn't appear to notice he was there, according to an investigative summary.

"When Anicia began assisting the customer directly in front of the suspect, she then appeared to notice the suspect standing in her line," the report said. "The suspect immediately produced a handgun and fired a single shot into Anicia's face."

Andreau Yankton calmly walked out of the store and toward his car. When a police officer confronted him in the parking lot, he pulled the .38 caliber revolver from his pocket and shot himself in the chest, the report said.

REPUBLIC, WA. -- Family members say a young man suspected of killing his wife and then himself in an apparent murder-suicide in Republic may have suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder after returning from Iraq.

Jessica Armstrong and Chad Olson.

Chad Olson, 21, and Jessica Armstrong were found shot to death in the home they shared with Olson's parents early Saturday morning.

Olson's brother called 911 after hearing gunshots in the home. He went to check on the couple, but saw blood through the window.

Authorities say they found several rambling notes in the house, mostly incoherent, but many starting with the words "I'm sorry."

According to Olson's MySpace page, he logged on about an hour before police say he shot Armstrong and killed himself.

Last month, Jessica posted several messages about how excited she was to marry Olson on July 10th. But less than two weeks later, authorities say Armstrong filed for separation.

There are more, far too many more on this blog alone. It's only been up for two years and here are over 42 posts on murder suicide and several more on investigations. There are Iraq veterans and Afghanistan veterans, Vietnam veterans, cops, you name it. The most troubling part out of all of this is that too many other people will just not get it and understand how serious this all is.

These are not your average run of the mill common criminals. These are men and yes, women, willing to lay down there lives for the sake of someone else all of a sudden turning into someone not only wanting to die, but to take someone they are supposed to love with them. See any reason to respond to all of this better than we have done? Do people kill other people? Yes. There is an enormous problem when it ends up coming from someone willing to die to help a stranger though.

We will keep reading more and more reports like this unless we finally get our act together and address the deeper emotional issue behind most of this. PTSD is not going away and will end up being one more generational carry over when kids grow up with a Dad or Mom veteran that never saw the help they need.

If you want to read more about murder-suicides, try reading Screaming in an Empty Room because that blog goes back over a few years. There are many more there.

Shake the Devil Off

Book reviews: 'Shake the Devil Off' by Ethan Brown and 'The Year Before the Flood' by Ned Sublette

12:00 AM CDT on Sunday, August 30, 2009
By BEATRIZ TERRAZAS / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News
Beatriz Terrazas is a former Dallas Morning News photographer and writer whose work will be published in TCU Press' upcoming Literary El Paso.

Just in time for Hurricane Katrina's fourth anniversary come two ambitious books set against New Orleans. Both lay bare collective wounds.

In Shake The Devil Off: A True Story of the Murder That Rocked New Orleans, veteran journalist Ethan Brown examines post-traumatic stress disorder through Zackery Bowen, a charismatic soldier in the U.S. Army's 527th MP Company.

Zack, a New Orleans bartender before his enlistment, did tours of duty in Kosovo and Iraq. While overseas, his marriage derailed. Discharged in 2004, he returned with his family to New Orleans only to divorce and begin a turbulent relationship with artist Addie Hall. They were among the holdouts who made headlines by riding out Katrina.

A year later, having survived Kosovo, Iraq and Katrina, Zack made news again by killing Addie, dismembering her body, then killing himself.

One psychiatrist tells Brown that Zack's downward spiral probably had several causes, including the loss of friends in Iraq, the collapse of his marriage and the transition to civilian life. Zack's fellow soldiers express feelings of being forgotten by the rest of America.

But Brown discovers the military, too, is at fault. He cites a VA memo cautioning against PTSD diagnoses: "Consider a diagnosis of Adjustment Disorder ... we really don't have time to do the extensive testing that should be done to determine PTSD." At the same time, the National Institute of Mental Health warned that inadequate mental health care could lead to "postwar suicides among Iraq and Afghanistan vets" exceeding combat deaths.

Authorities are searching for a Winter Haven man and his 21-year-old live-in girlfriend after witnesses said he shot the woman Tuesday and put her in his SUV before driving away.

John "Jack" M. Nicholson, 57, is accused of shooting Kristy Lisenby at around 5:29 a.m. Tuesday in front of Jarrett Gordon Ford, 3015 Lake Alfred Road, Winter Haven.

A witness took a photo of the 1991 Ford Explorer 2-door Sport that Nicholson was driving. The gray vehicle has a Florida license plate: F807FS. Nicholson lives at 80 Perch St., Winter Haven,

Authorities checked local hospitals but no one matching Lisenby's description has been treated, according to a news release this morning from the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

Witness told authorities a man thought to be Nicholson was driving his SUV when he pulled alongside a woman later identified as Lisenby.

"Lisenby was then observed to walk to the vehicle, lean into the passenger window and at the same time, witnesses say they observed the driver, a male, raise an unknown type of gun at the victim. Witnesses reported hearing a gunshot,'' according to the release.

"Witnesses reported they then saw Lisenby fall to the ground. The driver then exited the SUV, walked around picked up the victim, and placed her in the passenger seat. The suspect then drove away from the scene. "

An arrest warrant charging Nicholson with aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated assault with a firearm has been issued for him.

Leslie Brown Simmons had been a victim of domestic violence, even going to prison after being convicted of arranging the murder of her husband, who allegedly had beaten her with a pipe and threatened to kill her.

Now, she leads workshops on how to escape abusive relationships and recently had counseled her sister, Christine Johnson Tyler, like she would any other victim: Change the locks. Don't be surprised if your husband beats you one day and buys you jewelry the next. If you want to be separated, don't let him back in the house.

"She listened but she didn't take my advice," said Brown Simmons, 55, of Maywood.

Johnson Tyler, 52, was killed early Tuesday in her home in Chicago's Austin neighborhood. Her estranged husband, Gardell Tyler, 57, shot her multiple times, then shot and killed himself a few hours later at his workplace, police said.
