Alayna Adams was living a dream as she prepared to throw out the first pitch Thursday night before thousands of Tampa Bay Rays fans at Tropicana Field.

Her father, a lieutenant colonel stationed in Afghanistan for most of the past two years, appeared on the stadium video screen. He said hello and told his daughter he would see her soon.

The 9-year-old Dunedin girl launched the ball and watched it bounce across the turf toward home plate.

A man wearing a Rays uniform and a catcher's mask and pads squatted behind the plate. As the ball rolled toward him, he stepped forward and scooped the ball in his glove.

Alayna thought there was something odd about the way he caught the ball. It wasn't quite how a professional ballplayer would do it.

The man at the plate stood and lifted his mask. It was her father, Lt. Col. Will Adams.

She sprinted to him. He swept her into his arms.

Chicago's WGN couldn't do justice to "heart warming" Bulls story?

This could have been a fantastic story of a homecoming but the report blew it big time. The words "heart-warming" didn't seem to matter enough to even manage more than six short sentences! We don't even know what the names are, how long he had been gone, or anything else.  WOW this is really lousy reporting.  Why didn't the reporter just stick the picture up on Facebook and call it a day?

Soldier surprises mom at Bulls game
by WGN Web Desk

There was a heart-warming moment at Saturday night’s Bulls game against the Indiana Pacers.

A mother was escorted to the court during a time-out.

She thought she was about to take a half-court shot.

But, when Benny the Bull removed her blind-fold, she got something better.

Her son, who just returned from being deployed in Iraq, was there to surprise her.

She had no idea he was home.

go here to see the picture but that's all you're going to get from this. One comment summed it all up.

PASADENA, Calif. — A couple who became husband and wife on the "Love Float," a surprise reunion between a returning soldier and his little boy, and a grand marshal famed globally for her chimpanzee research were among the highlights of the 124th Rose Parade on Tuesday.

The parade's spectacular 42 floral floats brightened an otherwise cloudy New Year's morning and boosted the spirits of a chilled crowd estimated at some 700,000 spectators lining the 5-mile route.

Spectators rose to a standing ovation when Army Sgt. First Class Eric Pazz, who was riding on the Natural Balance Pet Foods float along with other service members, got off the float and walked over to his surprised wife Miriam and 4-year-old son Eric Jr., who came running out of the stands into the arms of his 32-year-old father.

Miriam Pazz had been told she had won a contest to attend the parade and did not know her husband, who is deployed in Afghanistan, would be there. Pazz is a highly decorated soldier who has also served in Iraq. The family, who currently lives in Germany, climbed aboard the float for the rest of the route.

9 years later, Iraq veteran gets welcome home

Former Army Sgt. Wayne U. Games returned from Iraq in 2003, but never got a welcome home celebration.

A 1987 graduate of Vineland High School, Games became seriously ill during his deployment and had to be flown directly to Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He was admitted to the intensive care unit suffering from high blood pressure, heart and lung problems, and had to be placed on dialysis.

Games, 42, has been classified as 90 percent disabled by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Most recently, he was diagnosed with Waldenstrom lymphoma.

“I never got a homecoming. I just remember getting sick, being flown to Ramstein Air Base in Germany, then to the United States. It took two days and when we got to Walter Reed it was nighttime and we were met by veterans who handed us some bags,” said Games. “That was my homecoming.”

On Dec. 16, Games received a much more appropriate welcome home and thank you from family, friends and officials who arrived at his Myrtle Street home.

The event was initiated by the “Welcome Home Committee” formed by Mayor Robert Romano to welcome back every soldier. The event was attended by Romano, as well as state Sen. Jeff Van Drew and state assemblymen Nelson Albano and Matthew Milam. read more here

A surprise party turned one strong marine a bit emotional Saturday night.

Two days after Sergeant Micheal Iwanski's return from Afghanistan, Operation Welcome You Home partnered up with his wife Corporal Alyssa Iwanski to throw this Aurora marine a surprise party.

"When we see his face and beaming ear to ear it's the best joy, best reward i can have," Donna Morsovillo of Operation Welcome You Home said.

A police motorcade escorted the young couple and their three daughters to a local pub where relatives, friends and perfect strangers paid tribute to this clearly emotional father and marine.

"I was just thinking about the guys who didn't make it home. Those are my heroes. They are the guys I look up to," he said.

Soldier Surprises Wife, It's going to be a very happy Thanksgiving for a San Antonio couple.

A soldier fighting in Afghanistan paid his wife back home a special surprise just in time for the holidays.

U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Jonathan Gillis surprised his wife Giselle with flowers at the end of the finish line at the fifth annual Rock "N" Roll marathon in San Antonio Sunday.

Gillis, a member of the 1/143rd Infantry Unit in Austin, Texas, had left Afghanistan last week but had told his wife his arrival would be delayed due to dental surgery.

Once his wife saw him, she was overwhelmed with joy and ran into his arms.

Gillis had been away on deployment in Afghanistan since January.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Shortly before kickoff in the Carolina Panthers' 1 p.m. game Sunday against the Denver Broncos, the big video boards at opposite ends of Bank of America Stadium will tell the story of Staff Sgt. Brian Williams and his explosive-sniffing dog, Carly.

He lost his left leg above the knee, suffered injuries to all four limbs, had multiple soft tissue wounds and lost four teeth. Carly was unhurt.

Brandon Davis has the earned the reputation among his family as not being able to keep a secret. But the Louisiana National Guard specialist kept a big one from his family this week, remaining cooped up in a New Orleans hotel just minutes away since Wednesday while his family thought he was still on active duty in Afghanistan.

The Davis family is completely surprised to their husband and dad return for war to celebrate the birth of their new child and celebrate Veteran's Day at the Superdome in New Orleans, Sunday November 11, 2012.

Meanwhile, his family, including his wife, Leslie and four of his five children, were invited to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome to receive what they thought was a community service award from the American Red Cross in Davis' honor prior to Sunday's New Orleans Saints-Atlanta Falcons game.

After the family was presented with the plaque and a short video message from Davis to his family, Davis said "I can't wait any longer" and burst through a tunnel and made his way to his stunned family standing at the 50-yard line.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — When Amanda Page's soldier husband returned from Afghanistan, she wanted to record the moment on film.

But carrying around the couple's 9-month-old daughter, a diaper bag and a camera seemed like a little too much for Page.

She decided to do what a growing number of military families are doing these days: She hired a professional photographer to photograph the homecoming.

Photographers said military families have been hiring professionals to record their homecomings for a few years.

But the trend became even more popular in recent months, said Sally Siko, owner of Silvercord Event Photography, and Annalesa Alverio of Indie Anna Photography.

Both Siko and Alverio have spent hours waiting for planes to land, watching fidgety children and nervous adults and looking out for those pictures of raw emotion when a family is finally reunited.

"It's pretty awesome," Siko said.
