Senate Armed Services Committee approves Hagel Pentagon nomination
Controversial Hagel nomination passes on party line vote, proceeds to full Senate
Hagel has been criticized for a range of controversial foreign policy stances

Washington (CNN) -- Members of the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday narrowly approved the choice of Chuck Hagel to serve as President Barack Obama's next defense secretary, sending the controversial nomination to the full Senate.

Hagel's nomination cleared the committee in a straight party line 14 to 11 vote. No Republicans backed the former Nebraska GOP senator, a decorated Vietnam veteran who has come under fire on a range of issues relating to American foreign policy in the Middle East and elsewhere.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, declared that he could not "in good conscience support this nomination because ... it is sending the worst possible signal to our friends and our enemies alike."

Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Virginia, argued that Hagel has shown "again and again that he is willing to sacrifice and that he has courage. ... I give him credit for that."

(CNN) -- On Monday Esquire magazine published a massive profile of the Navy SEAL who says he shot Osama bin Laden.

Weighing in at some 15,000 words, the story does not identify the killer of al Qaeda's leader by his real name and refers to him only as "the Shooter."

Clearly the Shooter wanted to maintain something of the code of silence that is pervasive among the covert warriors of SEAL Team 6, the unit that mounted the bin Laden operation.

TULSA, Oklahoma - An Oklahoma veteran is enjoying a long overdue payday. The former soldier, from Tulsa, finally received $600,000 in back benefits that he was never paid because of a paperwork error.

The veteran wants to keep his privacy about the money, so we won't use his name.

He recently got paid for a claim he filed in 1986.

"It happened about three months ago and it's still soaking in. I still try to save coupons for the store. It's still soaking in," he said.
