Tampa VA hospital apologizes to veterans for 'miscommunication'

TAMPA — The James A. Haley VA Medical Center has apologized to four men quoted in a recent St. Petersburg Times article about difficulties they faced in a program that pays for medical care outside the facility, a hospital spokeswoman said.

This program, called fee basis, allows veterans to get medical care outside the Department of Veterans Affairs if the agency is too busy, doesn't offer a service or in case of some emergencies.

Veterans interviewed by the Times for the Oct. 16 story complained appointments with non-VA doctors have been canceled because of Haley's budget problems. Some noted instances in which Haley refused to pay for outside medical care.

"We have contacted those veterans who contacted you and apologized for any miscommunication that our veterans received," Haley spokeswoman Carolyn Clark said.

But interviews with most of the veterans or their families indicate the VA has not offered to remedy any of the problems they discussed in the story.

Senator Rick Santorum said we lost the war in Iraq?

I can't believe I just saw this! Santorum had a lot to say but when he said "we lost the war in Iraq" I almost fell off my chair. Is he that stupid?

The mission for the troops in Iraq was to remove Saddam, remove the threat to the US and then it was to restore power to the people to secure and run their own country. Sure, the reasons Bush gave changed but men like Santorum didn't pay enough attention to what was going on to ask a single question, didn't ask for plans that worked and never managed to complain once about how the conditions were for our troops back then. How many years was he in full support of what was going on? Since the troops were sent in 2003 and all the time Bush was president. He squawks about Wall Street Bail out but forgets about the billions lost in Iraq that no one ever had to account for.

If all of this was not bad enough, the troops won in Iraq a long time ago and did everything they were sent to do. They paid a very high price so that people like Santorum can go on TV and say they lost. Who elected this man ready to put politics ahead of the troops risking their lives, carrying their wounds and families with someone missing from their home?

Santorum: We lost the war in Iraq
Republican presidential candidate and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum spoke with Bob Schieffer on the U.S. troop withdrawal in Iraq and the possible threat of Iran's influence in the fragile nation after their departure. (Oct. 23) (CBS News)

Sheriff: Tenn. guardsman kills Ga. deputy, self

ATLANTA — A guardsman who appeared to be drunk and had been firing at passing cars shot and killed a sheriff’s deputy, then committed suicide alongside a Georgia road, authorities said Sunday.

Evidence shows Christopher Michael Hodges, 26, fired 35 rounds from his M4 semiautomatic rifle, Richmond County Sheriff’s Capt. Scott Gay said. Hodges and 47-year-old Deputy James D. Paugh were found dead on the side of Bobby Jones Expressway after 1 a.m. Sunday, Gay said.

Hodges was based with the Tennessee National Guard but was on temporary duty at Fort Gordon for training, said Buz Yarnell, a spokesman for the post. Yarnell said he was not aware of any problems with Hodges before the shooting, and he would not say if Hodges had previously been deployed overseas.

Sheriff Ronnie Strength told The Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle that Paugh was off duty and on his way home when he saw a suspicious car on the side of the road. He was shot several times when he stopped to check on the car and apparently fired two shots from his service weapon before he was killed.

SMITH VALLEY, NV - A wounded soldier and his family got a first look at their now finished new home Saturday.

The house is designed for wheel-chair access, with shelves that fold out, lower counters, wider doors.
