He's riding across the country on horseback to raise money for injured vets, but thieves have made the trip less comfortable

Marine and Iraq war veteran Matt Littrell says he once considered taking his own life but chose to live. Now he's trying to help other vets by traveling across the country on horseback to raise money and awareness for vets dealing with depression.

Last night, while he was staying in Payson, somebody stole his saddle.

Littrell and two riding partners have been raising money for the Semper Fi Fund, a nonprofit which provides assistance for injured and ill veterans.

KANSAS CITY -- Trisha Yearwood has performed the national anthem at several World Series, but no matter how many of these she's asked to do, it never gets old.

"I love to do it," the country music star said while taking in the scene from the field during batting practice before Game 1 on Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium. "It's such an honor."

Yearwood, a chart-topper since releasing her debut album in 1991, is in the middle of touring with her husband, Garth Brooks. When she got the call asking her to sing the anthem, she was hoping she could fit it in her schedule. The timing was perfect.

"I knew when the window of the World Series was, and I said, 'If I can do it, I'd love to do it,'" she said. "I was so excited that I got to be here for Game 1."

Dogs of War: Inside look at life after war with PTSD service dogs

'Dogs of War:' New A and E Series Captures 'Intense' Journey of PTSD Military Veterans As They're Matched With Shelter Dogs

Stephanie, a 25 year-old wife, mom and veteran haunted by memories of her year as a prison guard in Iraq, is paired with service dog Atticus in A and E's 'Dogs of War,' a new docuseries following war veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, as they are paired with shelter dogs trained to help them adjust to life after combat.

The A and E network will soon debut "Dogs of War," a new docu-series about war veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the service dogs that help them adjust back into life after combat.

The show, which premieres on Veteran's Day next month, is based on married couple Jim and Lindsey Stanek and their nonprofit organization Paws and Stripes. The organization provides service dogs to wounded military veterans, and each episode will chronicle the journey of one or two PTSD veterans as they are paired with man's best friend.

"This series is full of raw, real and intensely emotional moments that don't often get a spotlight in mainstream media," David McKillop, General Manager and Executive Vice President of A and E said in a press release. read more here

More Veteran’s Day events in Central Florida

October list #2 – Cumulative list of veteran, military and patriotic events in Central FL

This list INCLUDES Veteran’s Day events in Central Florida.  This was compiled to the best of my ability and with the assistance of those who provided the information to me.  There MAY be other events that I am not aware and have no information about.
Please share this information and events with your friends and interested others and attend.  Post where appropriate.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Everyone and especially Veterans – please plan to attend the various school programs.  There MAY be events at some schools near your home that are not listed here.  Our young ones need to be aware of who veterans are and how they have served our country.  Your attendance reinforces the efforts that some teachers are trying to provide.  Be an example – be someone that the young generation will remember and model after…

Just a bit of reminder for folks - There is a difference between veterans and military.  Sometimes people get confused that veterans were once active military but they are not officially serving anymore.  And our military are serving now and will one day be veterans.  Retired veterans served a specified required time in service.  All military retirees are veterans but not all veterans are military retired.   Veterans Day honors all persons who once were in the military - especially the living.  Memorial Day honors those who died while serving in the military. Armed Forces Day is the third Saturday in May - it was established in 1950 to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Air Force Days.  It is a day to pay tribute to men and women who currently serve the United States’ armed forces.

October is Agent Orange Awareness Month.  The organization Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) encourages your education and support of the Federal Toxic Exposure Research Act of 2014 (S.2738 and H.R.5484)  Shared by the VVA Chapter 755 of Osceola County.

Attn. persons with any family member currently deployed to Afghanistan and other “rough areas.” - Local groups are seeking the names and addresses for warriors in such areas.  They want to send care packages of snacks, good food, hygiene items, and things that may not be readily available to warriors in those “frontlines.”  Providing names and addresses early (NOW) will allow the warriors to provide such items as gifts to their battle buddies during the holidays.  One such care package group is J.O.S.H. - Just Our Soldiers' Helpers Inc.  Contact Kathy at 407-314-1607  kathy@joshsupport.org  and also CC  me (Cathy H.) at chaynes11629@yahoo.com.

Shopping consideration – As we are preparing for the upcoming holidays, please consider buying items that are made in this country.  Buying “Made in U.S.A.” allows employment for more persons in this country and some of those workers may be veterans, reservists, or guardsmen/women.  UPC barcodes do not always indicate the country of manufacture.  Look for the “Made in U.S.A.” labeling.

Mentors needed - Orange County Veterans Court IS succeeding!  Longer term success is possible with community mentors.  Be a “battle buddy” or “foxhole buddy” by assisting someone with life challenges.  No proselytizing – just non-judgmental caring.  Most of the offenders are DUI or possession, or PTS anger issues that are being rechanneled.  If you have experienced substance abuse – although not required - and came thru it, you may be very helpful to someone else.  If you are interested in participating as a mentor, know someone who is interested, or are a part of an organization where Mentors can be recruited, contact Beatrice Brown, the Coordinator.  A Mentor Training session will be provided.  She and Judge Brewer have graciously offered to visit and speak to various groups and organizations to tell about the mentor program and the successes of the Veteran’s Court.  It does make a difference and you can too…..  Contact Beatrice Brown at 407-496-1307 wellsbrownlawgroup@gmail.com

Michael Savage Lashes Out After Veteran with PTSD Calls

Savage said the country needs "men like him to save the country" after a caller saying he was a veteran with PTSD. He said people with PTSD are a bunch of losers and looking for a paycheck. Yep! He went off digging the hole in his mouth bigger and bigger while I was thinking about the Navy SEALs with PTSD and some of them committed suicide, along with other members of Special Forces, along with Soldiers, Marines, Sailors and Airmen. Along with them members of the National Guards and Reservists. Along with them the other millions of veterans with PTSD and along with them firefighters and police officers. As if all that wasn't bad enough, he also said that ISIS defeated our military!
Michael Savage rails against PTSD sufferers: ‘No wonder ISIS can defeat our military’
The Washington Times
By Jessica Chasmar
Tuesday, October 21, 2014
“I am so sick and tired of everyone with their complaints about PTSD, depression,” the host began. “Everyone wants their hand held, and a government check. What are you, the only generation that had PTSD? The only generation that’s depressed? I’m sick of it. I can’t take the celebration of weakness and depression.”

Conservative radio host Michael Savage recently launched into a fiery rant against those who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, arguing that the “celebration of weakness and depression” has undermined the United States and its military.

“No wonder we’re being laughed at around the world. No wonder ISIS can defeat our military,” Mr. Savage said about veterans with PTSD during his radio program on Oct.14, Mediaite reported.

I am sure there are a lot of veterans out there with medals to prove they were brave enough to go into combat ready to have a conversation with this man about his view of the nation they defended.

Veterans get slammed again in the media over disability claims

How many times have veterans got violent to cause this response? Seems it would have to be a huge issue or it wouldn't be a news report. Gee I wonder why they made an issue out of this when it appears to be very rare, unless the National Journal has some kind of inside information no one else knows about.
VA Moves to Prevent Veteran Violence Over Disability Claims
To curtail confusion, the department wants to change when veterans can view the results of their disability exam online.
National Journal
BY JORDAIN CARNEY
October 21, 2014

Veterans Affairs officials want to change when veterans can view some of their medical records online, fearing that some could become violent if they see negative comments and think their disability claims will be denied.

Veterans must get a medical exam as part of the process for filing a disability claim for a service-related injury. Within days or weeks of the exam, veterans can see the doctor's forms or notes by using the "Blue Button" on My HealtheVet, the VA's website for health records.

A group of department officials said Monday that they fear some veterans could see the notes from the exam, assume from this partial picture that their claim is being denied, and take out their anger on local VA officials. They voiced their safety concerns Monday to members of the department's Advisory Committee on Disability Compensation at their meeting this week in Washington.

"He walks past the [compensation-and-pension] clinic, and he's very angry. Goes into the C-and-P clinic, and we have an incident of some kind," said Gerald Cross, the chief officer in the Veterans Health Administration's office of disability and medical assessment. "Some of our C-and-P clinics are quite small, … and it doesn't have much in the way of reasonable defense. We're very concerned about that."

VA Hospital DNR Let Vietnam Veteran Die

Vietnam vet dies after mistaken DNR order at VA hospital
KXTV-TV, Sacramento, Calif.

October 21, 2014

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A Vietnam veteran and former deputy sheriff who died following surgery last week at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center here had a do-not-resuscitate armband mistakenly placed on him, VA officials said.

But the officials insisted the error was not fatal because doctors quickly checked the medical records of Roland Mayo, 65, of Citrus Heights, Calif., to confirm the designation.

"Friday morning he was smiling and doing fine," said Delania Mayo Kenton, the youngest of Mayo's three grown children.

Privacy rules prevent the VA from identifying the patient to anyone other than his next of kin, in this case his twin brother, spokeswoman Tara Ricks said Monday.

Kenton and Mayo's daughter-in-law were among the family members who identified Mayo as the patient.
"After an initial investigation, we can confirm that a do-not-resuscitate band was incorrectly placed on one of our patients who passed away on Friday," Ricks said in a statement. "The arm band did not contribute to a delay in the response of the code team, which attempted to resuscitate the patient within minutes of the code being called. At this time, initial findings indicate that timely resuscitation was performed.

MLB World Series Game One Veterans and Military Families

While this is wonderful, it isn't totally. They said "To date, a total of approximately $17 million in grants has been awarded to nonprofit agencies and hospitals supporting returning Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and their families' greatest needs, focusing on treatment and research of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI)." Which means older veterans and families are not remembered.
First four World Series games dedicated to important causes

KANSAS CITY -- Five years ago, Major League Baseball introduced a significant addition to the World Series that would involve everyone in some way, even the players and umpires. Because only the first four games were a sure thing, each of those was dedicated with a theme of community service, serving as a high-impact backdrop for what happened on the field.

It all began in New York, with Game 1 dedicated to military veterans and their families. First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, wife of the vice president, joined Commissioner Bud Selig at a nearby Veterans Administration hospital, spending an hour with veterans and then participating in pregame ceremonies before the Phillies played the Yankees.

Today, the annual World Series Community Initiative program is an established tradition that gives two clubs and their fan bases even greater rewards for reaching the ultimate stage of international attention. The Kansas City Royals and San Francisco Giants will each have two dedicated game themes -- starting almost exactly the way it did in 2009 -- to raise awareness for important causes associated with charitable initiatives and MLB partners.
Game 1: Veterans and Military Families.

As it did last year for the opener in Boston, this dedication will highlight support of the Welcome Back Veterans initiative. Selig will be joined on Tuesday afternoon by Royals chairman David Glass and president Dan Glass; Royals Hall of Famer John Mayberry; U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert McDonald; and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral James Winnefeld in a visit with veterans at the Kansas City VA Medical Center Honor Annex. Then there will be a special on-field pregame ceremony and other activities will take place at the ballpark.

Since 2008, MLB and the Robert R. McCormick Foundation have committed more than $30 million to Welcome Back Veterans (WelcomeBackVeterans.org). To date, a total of approximately $17 million in grants has been awarded to nonprofit agencies and hospitals supporting returning Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and their families' greatest needs, focusing on treatment and research of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI).

VA Clinic Still Short Staff in Illinois

Springfield VA clinic grapples with short staffing
The Associated Press
October 21, 2014

SPRINGFIELD, ILL. — The overseer of federal outpatient clinics for veterans in central Illinois said sudden short staffing at the Springfield site is posing "unprecedented" challenges in meeting patient demands as the nation's Veterans Affairs system faces questions about long wait times in delivering care.

Dr. Dexter Hazlewood, chief of the VA Illiana Health Care System's outpatient clinics, said two doctors have left the Springfield clinic over the summer, putting that site "in a very, very challenged position" at a time when it has the same or greater patient demand.

But Hazlewood told The (Springfield) State Journal-Register (http://bit.ly/1sLfTbD ) that he does not believe any patient conditions have worsened because of the vacancies and related delays in appointments. Hazelwood said that while the recent staffing shortage has drawn complaints from some of the clinic's 5,000 to 6,000 patients, most of them appear understanding of the situation.

"A shortage of this extent is unusual and not anything anticipated," he said. "We practice what we call 'veteran-centric' care. The veteran is at the center of what we do. The vast majority of veterans are very pleased with their care."

U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock, a Peoria Republican whose district includes part of the Springfield area, is working with five to 10 veterans upset with access and quality-of-care issues related to the Springfield VA site.

"We have a concerning number of open cases involving the Springfield clinic," and the veterans' concerns have been conveyed to VA officials, said Benjamin Cole, a senior adviser to Schock.

Plugged in again refreshed and renewed

Thursday morning I got on a plane to Texas and then another plane to Las Vegas. It was to be for a happy occasion unlike most times I have flown away from home. My niece was getting married!
I haven't seen her in a few years, or the rest of my family, since we moved down to Florida.
(I'll have more pictures later on Facebook and Google+)
Lake Mead View from Wedding
Red Rock Canyon Marsha and Shawn
It was an amazing trip, which I will write about later, however for now, I wanted to talk about being away from everything.

I never understood how so many people could be so connected to the world online, yet not know what was going on in their own families.

Sure it's easy to understand getting away from watching the news on TV, since most of the people I talked to don't trust it to be actual news anymore. After 5 days of no news, no computer or blogging getting in the way, I disconnected from technology and reconnected to my family.

I saw parts of the country I had never seen before. The trips I had made in the past put me as far west as Texas, but seeing the country from a plane or from a tiny area around where I had to be was not the same as being there. Catching up with family online was not the same as being there either.

When we talk face to face, spend time together, that is healing as well as fulfilling.

I highly recommend it!

Here are some suggestions on refueling your spirit.

Unplug! Get away from the internet and away from the TV.

See parts of the country you had never seen before or revisit places you have.

There are parts of your life needing you to remember that your daily view is not enough to feed your soul.

Stop texting so much and start talking more.

Take time to enjoy spending time with the people you care about and not just time "on them" with catching up on Facebook.

The world will still go on, news will still come out but you will have a whole new attitude when you step away long enough to look, see, hear, feel and love.

Another Veteran Suicide "Prevention Bill" After Another Suicide

We Must Improve Anti-Suicide and Mental Health Care Programs at the VA
Huffington Post
Rep. John K. Delaney
U.S. Representative for Maryland's 6th Congressional District
Posted: 10/14/2014

America's men and women in uniform bravely defend our nation and our values. Their skill, dedication and valor are the envy of the world. When their time in uniform is over, they are entitled to world-class health care, a benefit they've earned and that their country is grateful to provide for them. We have to improve Department of Veterans' Affairs (VA) services: wait times are too long, veterans don't have enough options and benefits paperwork takes too long to process, especially for veterans in Maryland that use the Baltimore VA. The bipartisan VA reform bill that was signed into law this summer is a good start -- providing more funding, more flexibility and more accountability -- but we still have work to do.

One of the most critical areas of need is improving our suicide prevention efforts. According to a study conducted by the VA, on average, 22 veterans a day commit suicide. That's one tragedy every 65 minutes and according to analysis done by CNN, that number could be even higher. This is an area where the American people are clearly united that we have to do more. To improve mental health care services for veterans and improve VA programs, Congress should pass the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act as soon as possible.

The legislation is named for an exceptional young man whose story deserves to be told. Clay Hunt was the kind of individual that has made America a great country. In 2005, when his country needed him, he enlisted in the Marine Corps. Shot in Iraq, he earned a Purple Heart and after he recuperated, he graduated from Marine Corps Scout Sniper School and was deployed to Afghanistan. After leaving the military in 2009, he became an advocate for veterans and worked with Team Rubicon, a humanitarian aid organization.

However, Clay also struggled with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression and survivor's guilt as he transitioned to civilian life. He lost friends in both Iraq and Afghanistan and witnessed fellow soldiers being killed. But Clay received a low PTSD disability rating (30 percent) from the VA and struggled to receive adequate counseling and care. He had to wait months to see a psychiatrist and the bulk of his counseling was related to medications he was prescribed. Clay attempted to appeal his PTSD rating and dealt with the VA misplacing his paperwork. In 2011, Clay took his own life.

I had to leave this comment. Just totally fed up!
How many more years? How many more Bills? How much more money are you guys willing to allow before Congress finally gets this right? No one has been held accountable for any of this after all these years.

There are no new lessons to be learned especially when Comprehensive Soldier Fitness is still being funded and pushed no matter how suicides have increased.

The DOD can claim suicides are down in the military but they can't claim it without telling folks the number of enlisted personnel has also gone down. They cannot claim it is working when OEF and OIF veterans are still coming home after 5 years of CSF and killing themselves. They can't claim it works when families still blame themselves because no one told them what they needed to know leaving them to learn on their own when it is much too late to keep their veteran alive.

Clay Hunt deserved to still be alive and healing. So did the other 8,030 veterans ending their lives at home that year after surviving combat on foreign soil.
