St. Petersburg Police received two separate donations of $600 to help Hardeman during recovery. An anonymous donor also reportedly provided Hardeman with a new walker to replace the one involved in the attack.
ST. PETERSBURG, FL — The search for a man accused of beating an elderly St. Petersburg veteran with his own walker ended in Tampa Thursday.

According to St. Petersburg Police, officers brought Harold Stewart, 37, into custody and also located the Dodge Durango connected to a Sept. 2 attack.

During that attack, Stewart is accused of approaching Jeffery Hardeman, 66, as he neared the entrance to the 201 34th St. N. Walmart in St. Petersburg around 1 p.m. Police say Hardeman, a disabled Army veteran, was using a walker at the time.

According to authorities, Stewart asked Hardeman for the time. “The younger man then put the elderly man in a choke hold, threw the elderly man to the ground and began punching him,” an earlier email from the police department said. “The younger man also used the elderly man's walker to proceed to beat the elderly man.”

Florida Fights To Keep Military Bases and Gain Some

Plans To Save, Expand Florida's Military Bases
WGCU
By BOBBIE O'BRIEN
September 9, 2016

Florida already promotes itself as the “number one veteran friendly state” and “number one in military readiness”. While those “number one” claims aren’t easily measured, the state has been proactive on measures to hang onto its 20 military installations.

Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam speaking
at the Military, Defense and Veterans Opportunities Summit.

The two main economic drivers in Florida are tourism and agriculture, but you can’t ignore the military. From military bases and defense contractors to 1.6 million veterans living in the state, the military contributes nearly 10 percent to the Florida economy.

That’s why protecting those military assets has become the mission of the Florida Chamber of Commerce Foundation, business leaders and elected officials.

They gathered recently for a Military, Defense and Veterans Opportunity Summit in Clearwater to prepare for a new round of base closures.

Although Congress has yet to agree to a new Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) round, experts say it’s just a matter of time. And Florida wants to be prepared.

“Unfortunately, people are not fully aware of what’s going on with base realignments because a lot of it is happening in D.C. behind closed doors,” said Tony Carvajal, executive vice president with the Florida Chamber of Commerce Foundation. “What is already happening is what we call the invisible BRAC, changes reassignments, relocations across the state.”

PTSD Soldier Says "Only Way to Beat That Enemy Is Ask For Help"

Benning soldier says battling suicidal feelings is tougher than combat
The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer (Tribune)

Published: September 9, 2016

“You realize that you are truly facing an enemy that you cannot defeat by yourself — an enemy that knows every secret, every weak point and every ounce of guilt inside you. The only way to beat that enemy is to call for help.”
Staff Sgt. David Mensink
As an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team leader, Army Staff Sgt. David Mensink was trained to deal with volatile situations.

But the 28-year-old Missouri native assigned to Fort Benning wasn’t trained to deal with the demons that led him to take 57 sleeping pills nearly three months ago in an attempt to end his life.

Thursday, Mensink received the Soldier’s Medal, the highest honor a soldier can receive for an act of valor in a non-combat situation, for his actions at a Birmingham, Ala., hospital when he removed a live grenade from a man’s leg.

Instead of talking about those actions nearly two years ago, Mensink used what should have been his moment of glory to talk about his darkest hour and what has become an urgent military issue: suicide.

“I have personally been pinned down by enemy fire, blown up, have had buddies die in front of me, and I have never felt more embattled than those days I sat alone in my driveway, hours on end, wishing I could do better and wishing I could ask for help,” Mensink told about 75 soldiers at the Maneuver Center of Excellence’s Derby Hall. “At the same time, my pride and my shame and guilt kept me from doing so.”

Mensink, by his count, is no stranger to death. Over his 11-year career, he’s had 13 close friends or colleagues killed in combat — and 11 more who have taken their own lives, he said.

PTSD Veterans Healing Past Demons of War

Veterans share their stories to help others fight PTSD
CBS News
By JIM AXELROD
September 7, 2016

After two tours in Iraq, after trying to drink himself past the demons that darkened his mind, and after a second member of his old platoon committed suicide, Frank Lesnefsky got help. Finally.

In his therapist’s office, he can talk about his post-traumatic stress instead of being haunted by it.

“I was immobilized,” Lesnefsky said. “It’s like being frozen, just watching time pass. It’s crazy.”

Lesnefsky, a retired Army staff sergeant, hit his own bottom and contemplated taking his own life.

In 2014, Lesnefsky found help through Headstrong, a non-profit whose mission is helping any vet who needs it deal with their hidden wounds. No cost, no wait.

Now, Lesnefsky is leading by a very public example. He is sharing his struggle with the 20 million followers of the popular blog Humans of New York.

More than a dozen stories have been published. CBS News asked a few of the bloggers to share what they posted.

Lesnefsky shared the story of how he was drawn to serving in the military, and detailed some of the horrors he witnessed in Iraq.

“There was an old man who fished in the same spot every single day. ... And one day this fifteen-year-old kid rides by on a scooter and drops a bomb behind him. ... I always honored the human form and now I’ve come to a place where the human body is shredded and stomped and blown to bits. And that just wasn’t me. I used to be jokey. I used to be goofy. I was Frank from North Scranton. And now i won’t ever be that again,” Lesnefsky wrote.

The Quiet Man Award-winning video on veteran suicide

Numbers are wrong but still a good story
Award-winning video on veteran suicide aims to save more lives
WSLS 10 News
By Erin Brookshier - Virginia Today Reporter
Published: September 8, 2016

ROANOKE (WSLS 10)– It’s a topic that can be difficult or uncomfortable to talk about, but one that’s in the national spotlight this month–suicide.

For the military, the issue is very real, with an estimated 22 veterans taking their own life each day. Burdened with the stigma associated with mental health issues and the military shame that surrounds Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), many veterans turn to suicide instead of reaching out for help.

John Koelsch, a local veteran, says he knows how they feel– he almost took his own life nearly two decades ago. Now he’s working to help those in the same position he was, suffering in silence.

He created a short film centered on veteran suicide, called The Quiet Man, that will soon be played in VA Hospital waiting rooms. The award-winning video features two veterans talking. One of them shows signs of depression and feelings of unworthiness before taking his own life.

Koelsch says he hopes this video will be able to break through to veterans considering suicide.

Virginia Iraq Veteran's New Home Comes With Many Blessings

Messages of love posted on Iraq war veteran's new smart home in Virginia
ABC7
BY RICHARD REEVE
SEPTEMBER 7TH 2016

STAFFORD, Va. (ABC7) — The laughter of children, a barking black lab, and animated snippets of conversation:

It was almost as if Marine Corps veteran Garrett Jones and his family had already moved in to their new smart home.

“It's filled with love,” says Chris Kuban, a spokesperson for the Gary Sinise Foundation. “It's filled with love from the community.”

On a sunny Wednesday morning, Jones, his wife Allison, and their three children attended a ‘wall of honor’ event at the specially-built home in Stafford.

“A lot of good has come from an unfortunate circumstance,” Jones says.

On July 23, 2007, just two weeks before he was scheduled to return home from Iraq, Jones, a Marine corporal, stepped on an IED.

"Disabled Veteran" Convicted of Stealing Over $1.6 Million From the VA

Man Convicted of Disability Fraud Claims He’s Actually Disabled
ABC News
By ASHLEY LOUSZKOALEXA VALIENTE

Paulsen was convicted of stealing more than $1.6 million from the VA and the Social Security Administration this January. He was ordered to pay back the $1.6 million in addition to a fine, and was sentenced to 41 months behind bars. Sep 7, 2016
Dennis Paulsen was convicted of stealing more than 1.6 million dollars from the department of Veteran's Affairs and the Social Security Administration in January of 2016.
Is it possible to be completely physically disabled one day and fully active the next?

That was the million dollar question for Dennis Paulsen.

From 1993 on, Paulsen, who served two years in the Navy, convinced the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that he was unable to use his hands or feet.

“[He said he was] not only too sick to work but too sick to get out of bed most days,” Assistant U.S. attorney Jay Richardson told ABC News’ “Nightline.”

Paulsen said he wasn’t able to walk or work. But throughout the years, that didn’t always seem like the case.

“He lived a very active lifestyle,” Richardson said. “He lived a life that changed depending on who he was around. So when he was around doctors and people that would provide him benefits, he gave the impression that he was wheelchair bound.”

Paulsen was seen on surveillance videos arriving at the VA for a checkup in his wheelchair, yet other times, he was on his feet walking just fine.

Another Vietnam Veteran Committed Suicide At VA Hospital

Police: Veteran committed suicide outside VA hospital
Des Moines Register
Charly Haley
September 6, 2016

A 72-year-old Vietnam War veteran died Sunday night after shooting himself in the head outside the Veterans Affairs hospital in Des Moines.

The man was found on the grass just east of the emergency room entrance at VA Central Iowa Health Care System, 3600 30th St. He was holding a revolver in his right hand and he had a gunshot wound on the right side of his head, according to a Des Moines police report.

He was declared dead at the scene by a medical examiner. Police are saying the death was a suicide.

The man's name has not been released.

Bart Quick, the VA's acting public affairs officer, said he didn't know whether the man was a patient at the Veterans Affairs hospital, but he did confirm the man was a 72-year-old Vietnam War veteran.

Mentioning Trump's Name Got Veteran Kicked Off Property of Another Veteran

GOP woos veterans, but Trump has rubbed some vets wrong way
Associated Press

Iraq war veteran and Nevada Republican party staffer Jon Staab talks with Vicky Maltman, a Reno veterans rights activist, before going out to canvass veterans, in Reno, Nev. on Aug. 19, 2016. Nicholas Riccardi/Associated Press
RENO, Nevada — It was more than a routine get-out-the-vote knock on the door when Iraq War veteran and Nevada Republican Party staffer Jon Staab asked Kenneth Olofson, a Vietnam veteran, if he'll be voting for Donald Trump. An instant bond was formed as the two swapped stories of service and those of relatives who fought in World War II.

"I don't miss an election," Olofson, 74 and a lifelong Republican, said. "Whenever I vote, I think of Normandy."

A few blocks away, Daniel Mendoza, also an Iraq war veteran canvassing for the GOP, was promptly kicked off another elderly veteran's property at the mere mention of Trump's name.

Two years ago, the Republican National Committee hatched a plan to bolster turnout for veterans, who traditionally lean Republican. The party calculated that 6.5 million veterans either didn't register to vote or didn't cast a ballot in the 2012 presidential election. In the shadow of the Obama administration's controversial management of the Veteran's Administration, the RNC compiled lists of veteran voters and hired veterans for an unprecedented get-out-the-vote effort.

Then Trump won the party's presidential nomination, and his controversial rhetoric has rubbed some veterans the wrong way. The billionaire businessman has mocked Sen. John McCain for being captured during the Vietnam War, threatened to withdraw from NATO and feuded with a slain soldier's family that criticized him during the Democratic National Convention.

GENERAL INFO, PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS

Military Bases No Longer Accepting IDs from Five States, U.S. military installations are no longer allowing visitors to gain base access using official ID cards from five states -- and other installations may soon follow.  State-issued driver's licenses and identification cards from Illinois, New Mexico, Missouri, Washington and Minnesota can no longer be used to obtain a visitor's pass because those cards don't comply with federal standards, officials said. DoD officials did not say whether or not enhanced driver's licenses (EDL) from Minnesota or Washington would still be accepted.  (Consider if you need to access the Exchanges on Patrick AFB or McDill AFB…. Thank you, Ed Burford, Seminole County Veterans Service Officer; Military.com)

Veterans should remain on high alert for IRS impersonators  - After tax-filing season, Veterans should be aware of people contacting them who claim to be from the Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury. These IRS tax impersonators have been using phone calls and emails to take millions of dollars from taxpayers in every state in the country. The callers tell intended victims they owe taxes and must pay using a pre-paid debit card, money order or a wire transfer. The scammers threaten those who refuse to pay with being charged for a criminal violation, a grand jury indictment, immediate arrest, deportation or loss of a business or driver's license.  To prevent taxpayers from falling victim to these scams, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration has expanded their outreach efforts to make sure people remain on high alert. DON’T FALL PREY!   (Thank you, Ed Burford, Seminole County Veterans Service Officer)

Veterans should avoid some VA benefits filers - Persons/businesses are in Central Florida who claim that they can file for your belated benefits and medical claims.  Some even “guarantee” the acceptance if you visit their special physicians – of which 2 are on the east coast of Central Florida.  The written statements from those physicians are worthless and you have to pay for the office appointments.  These filers may require upfront monies, up to and exceeding 40% of your benefit monies.  There are Veterans Service Organization volunteers (ie: American Legion, VFW, DAV, AVET Project, etc.) who will assist you AT NO COST.  Each county in Florida has a Veterans Service Office with professionals who will assist you AT NO COST – and Central Florida is especially fortunate to have some excellent personnel in those offices.  Don’t fall prey and lose your hard earned monies and time.  There may be instances where legal assistance could be an option.  The good resources listed above can guide you in that situation…don’t waste your money in the meantime.  The county Veterans Service Offices can assist in filing consumer complaints against the vultures.
