Hit-and-run driver kills local soldier
by Spencer Crawford/Villa Rican

A Villa Rica soldier was killed by a hit-and-run driver outside Fort Hood, Texas, early Friday morning, just weeks before he was to be sent to the Middle East for his fourth tour of duty.

James Michael Butler, 35, was an Army Reservist who had just reported to duty to Fort Hood on July 11 for four weeks of preparation before being sent to Afghanistan for a tour as a fixed-wing aircraft pilot. He had served three previous tours in either Iraq or Afghanistan as a Blackhawk helicopter pilot.

According to Killeen, Texas, media reports, a woman was driving down U.S. Business 190 near South Fort Hood Street about 4 a.m. Friday morning when she saw something in the road, tried to swerve and miss it, but couldn’t. It turned out to be Butler’s body, which state troopers say had already been run over by another car that fled the scene and is still being sought.

That's why the 70-year-old recently started a mechanical engineering job. His wife of 42 years has medical issues and, during the two years he was out of work, he paid about $1,000 a month for her health insurance.

"He was so happy to be working again," his daughter Cindy King said. "His whole life was about taking care of us."

Mr. Winton's family grieved Monday, two days after he was run over outside an east Fort Worth business. Police said that at 11 a.m. Saturday another driver backed his car into Mr. Winton's Chevrolet pickup in the parking lot of a doughnut shop in the 5600 block of Meadowbrook Drive, about four miles from his home.

Secret Service helps crack Florida hit-and-run case

Secret Service helps crack Florida hit-and-run case
Agency analyzed cell phone records for Porsche owner, friend

By Mike Clary and Jon Burstein, Tribune Newspapers

8:12 a.m. CDT, March 22, 2010
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — To crack the hit-and-run case of the speeding Porsche that killed two men, Fort Lauderdale police turned to a crime-fighting ally: the U.S. Secret Service.

The government agency that protects the president and zealously pursues counterfeiters played a role in the investigation by analyzing cell phone records for the car's owner and one of his friends, police records show.

The analysis helped lead to vehicular homicide charges last week against the Porsche's owner, Ryan LeVin, of Hoffman Estates, Ill., who is now in the Broward County Jail in Florida without bond.

What got the Secret Service involved? Neither the federal agency nor Fort Lauderdale police would say. The local head of the Secret Service declined to discuss how often his agency is asked to analyze such cell phone records.

Reported by Mark Jenkins

ORLANDO -- Orange County homicide detectives are looking for a driver who fled the scene after hitting and killing a woman early Tuesday.

North Goldenrod Road was shut down for hours in both directions at Valencia College Lane as investigators gathered evidence in what they called a road rage incident.

Investigators said Monica Salana, 24, and a friend got into an altercation at a nightclub on Bumby Avenue. The two then left in Salana’s car, but were followed by five people inside a black, four-door Nissan Altima.

After the people inside the Nissan began throwing things at Salana’s Volkswagen convertible, Salana pulled over on Goldenrod Road to confront them.

Hit and run killed Iraq Vet Brandon Kusmit. Do you know who?

Family seeks answers after Iraq veteran's death
by Michael Ferraresi - Nov. 11, 2008 04:05 PM
The Arizona Republic
Shards of auto glass and plastic pieces of motorcycle litter a dusty, dimly-lit corner of Greenway Road and 37th Street.

A candle burns next to a rock on the north side of intersection, near the spot where Brandon Kusmit was left for dead shortly after a hit-and-run traffic collision.

The corner of Greenway and 37th is merely blocks from both the Kusmit family's home and the mortuary where relatives mourned the 25-year-old's death during a Friday memorial service.

Kusmit, who grew up in northeast Phoenix before serving in the U.S. Army as part of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, died Nov. 2 after falling from his Yamaha R6 sports bike.

Phoenix detectives are searching for the driver of a pickup truck in connection to Kusmit's death. Family members put up $1,000 with the hope that witnesses come forward with information leading to an arrest.

"I just hope whoever did it confesses," said Jason Kusmit, 25, who spent the last week with family, mourning the loss of his twin brother.

"It feels like they're ruthless, to me," he said.

Brandon's son, Dakoda, celebrated his first birthday three days before his father's death. Jason's son, Jason Jr., is 2 years old.

You can help
• Phoenix vehicular crimes detectives interviewed some witnesses to the traffic collision that led to the Nov. 2 death of 25-year-old Brandon Kusmit.

• Anyone who was in the area of Greenway Road and 37th Street around 7:30 p.m., or who witnessed the incident is urged to call police to provide information.

• The Kusmit family offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

• The Phoenix Police Silent Witness program also provides up to $2,500 for information leading to an arrest in an unsolved hit-and-run collision.

Silent Witness can be made by calling 480-WITNESS

Nine injured in last night's fatal hit-and-run in St. Petersburg

Nine injured in last night's fatal hit-and-run
ST. PETERSBURG -- Police this morning gave a fuller account of last night's fatal hit-and-run accident, saying that the driver did not have a license and that nine people were injured.

Police spokesman Bill Proffitt said the incident began when police spotted a 2008 Dodge pickup driving in an erratic manner on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. S, near 22nd Avenue S. Police tried to stop the truck, but the driver kept going north "at a very high rate of speed and in a reckless manner." The Dodge had two passengers.

When the Dodge got to the 1300 Block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St., it lost control and slid toward the northwest corner of 13th Avenue S., "went airborne," struck a fire hydrant, and flipped.

The truck struck and killed Steven Mincey, 49, of St. Petersburg, who had been riding his bicycle on the north side of the MLK. The truck also struck several people who were outside near Ike's Liquors and four parked vehicles.

TAMPA — Detectives want to know who killed Wendy Irene Anthony.

The 43-year-old Tampa woman was found Saturday morning, lying on the side of the road with critical injuries from a hit-and-run vehicle.

Anthony, who was hearing-impaired, died late Monday at Tampa General Hospital, increasing detectives' interest in finding the person behind the wheel of the pickup they think struck her.

A Hillsborough sheriff's spokeswoman said the accident happened at County Road 579 north of Sligh Avenue, just before she was found at 7:24 a.m. Saturday.

Detectives think the vehicle was a 1994 to 2001 Dodge Ram pickup of unknown color.
