Camps reach out to military families

By AUDREY PARENTE

DELEON SPRINGS -- The "blob" distracts 6-year-old Claire Phelps from a scary part of life.

This blob is a giant blue air-pillow in the water at YMCA Camp Winona that propels the petite DeLand girl into the water when a fellow camper flops on the other end.

The real scary thing for Claire is that her dad, Army Maj. Matthew Phelps, is serving in Iraq.

Claire and 84 other Florida children of military families are being sponsored at the 60-acre camp in West Volusia for free by The National Military Family Association's Operation Purple Camp. Purple means all military branches are involved.

The nonprofit organization sponsored 10,000 military children at more than 60 camps across the country this summer.
