As the Ugandan orphans of a children's choir awaited word on the valuables stolen from one of their tour vans Sunday afternoon, a measure of comfort came in the form of a check from a concerned Chicago businessman.

Timothy Rand, president of Midway Airport Concessions, donated $10,000 on Monday to the SIFA African Children's Choir after watching a television report about the burglary. The gift was made on behalf of the Chicago Football Classic, a charity event Rand and his brother Everett organize each year, he said.

"It's just so tragic. Some of the things they lost can't be replaced, and contributions don't always help," Rand said. "But we're just trying to make it a little easier for them, ease some of the pain."

Rand made the donation while visiting the children at the Darst Center, a ministry on the South Side hosting the group during its 10-day stop in Chicago. After hearing the choir perform a song in thanks, Rand decided to double his original donation of $5,000.
