Ex-police chief arrested in '72 death of Marine

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. A former police chief has been charged with murder in the 1972 shooting death of a Marine, and authorities said late Tuesday the slain man's then-wife has also been charged.
The Daily News of Jacksonville reports the Onslow County Sheriff's Office charged 57-year-old George Hayden with killing Marine Sgt. William Miller. Hayden, who was police chief in Cape Carteret and Belhaven, was arrested Monday night.
Miller was found shot to death on Sept. 16, 1972, after returning from a deployment.
Investigative reports showed that Hayden had moved into Miller's mobile home and that Hayden later left with Miller's wife.
Late Tuesday, Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown said Miller's then-wife, identified now as Vickie Miller Hayden Babbitt, was in custody in Bend. Ore. Brown said Babbitt is charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

ReplyDeleteWhat a disgrace to Proud Marine brothers, shooting a defenseless man in the back, that really took guts! This marine that he shot, served two tours of Viet Nam, had two brothers also Marines serve in Viet Nam and a dad Bill who served in IwoJima as a Marine. A proud family of Marines. Justice will be carried out for these two cowards.
