JACKSONVILLE — Some Marines might claim that Sophocles is all Greek to them, but troops have some terminology in common with the ancient warrior and playwright: Shell-shocked. Thousand-yard stare.

And an international production coming to Camp Lejeune this week asserts that today’s combat-weary service members can discover more about themselves and their own experiences in war by revisiting some of Sophocles’ works, written some two-and-a-half millennia ago.

Theater of War presents a panel of four actors with film and television credits to give dramatic readings of the ancient Greek plays Ajax and Philoctectes, using the works as prompts for open town hall-style discussion in military communities on subjects including combat fatigue, post-traumatic stress and psychological and physical war injuries. The production will come to Lejeune’s Midway Park for two performances on Thursday presented by Marine Corps Community Services in honor of Suicide Prevention Week.
