Witnesses Thursday described a lovesick and suicidal Marine who was drinking heavily when he allegedly beat his Camp Pendleton roommate to death with a crowbar.

The descriptions came during the first court hearing for Lance Cpl. Darren J. Evans, accused of premeditated murder and related offenses in the Nov. 6 slaying of Lance Cpl. Mario Arias Jr.
Evans, 19, sat stoically inside a small base courtroom Thursday as fellow Marines testified how, in the weeks and hours leading up to the killing, they saw him become increasingly morose and often stumbling around drunk.

"He was drinking excessively before Labor Day," testified Lance Cpl. James Hugness. "After that, it got worse."
