The father of a Camp Pendleton-based Marine shot and killed by police in Palm Springs said the actions described by officials are uncharacteristic of his son.

Cpl. Allan DeVillena, 22, was shot and killed Saturday during a confrontation with police officers in the downtown area of Palm Springs.

"He's not the type to start anything let alone with a police officer. He was smarter than that," said Allan DeVillena Sr.

PALM SPRINGS (CBS SF) — The Riverside County coroner’s office confirmed Tuesday that a U.S. Marine who was shot and killed by police officers in Palm Springs early on Saturday was a San Jose resident.

Marine Cpl. Allan DeVillena II, 22, died at 2:08 a.m. Saturday, after suffering gunshot wounds during a confrontation with two officers in a parking garage in Palm Springs, the coroner’s office reported.

Two police officers shot and killed DeVillena after he ignored their demands that he stop his car and then rammed one officer with his car, according to Palm Springs police.
