News emerged on Tuesday of two military deaths — one a suicide — just as the last Canadian troops returned from Afghanistan.

The head of media operations of the Department of National Defence, Daniel Le Bouthillier, confirmed the deaths in an email to the Star.

Cpl. Alain Lacasse, 44, was found dead in his home in Valcartier, Que., on Monday afternoon. Police told CBC it was a suicide.

Master Cpl. Tyson Washburn, of Pembroke, Ont., died Saturday under unclear circumstances.

Le Bouthillier said his death did not take place on military property and is currently under investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police.

“As such, it is inappropriate for us to comment on the investigation,” he said.
