Veteran's Headstone Needed Spell Check

Grave mistake: Army veteran’s headstone has misspelling on it — twice

When Army veteran William Perry Wilcox died from cancer at the age of 55 in February, his family worked to get him buried next to thousands of other service members at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.

All the arrangements went well and Wilcox was buried in March, said his son, Calvin Wilcox, 28, an Air Force veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

However, when Wilcox’s headstone was installed at the cemetery in April, there were two mistakes on it: The Army veteran’s middle name was left off, and the word “United” — as in United States Army — was misspelled as “Uinted.”

“We were pretty shocked,” said Calvin Wilcox, a Georgetown resident.

His father served seven years in the Army as a military policeman at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and South Korea, getting out of the military as a staff sergeant in 1987. Before his death, he lived in Austin.
