SAN ANTONIO - Combat veteran Jonathan Kersey lives amid packed up boxes while waiting for his monthly living allowance from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The former soldier served three tours in Iraq and said he is facing eviction.

“I raised my hand, swore I would support and defend. Now I need them to support and defend me,” Kersey said.

Kersey participates in the Veterans Affairs Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Program, or VRE for short. He receives a stipend of about $1,600 while going to school to become a stenographer, or court reporter. Kersey reached out to the Defenders when his monthly benefit was delayed. The veteran was sent a letter in the beginning of July that told him it may be delayed, but he didn’t expect to have to wait nearly two weeks. Especially when his rent payment is about $1,100.
