New Fire Station Groundbreaking – Tues. Sept 8 - Orlando Fire Department Station 2, “The Pride of Parramore,” and one of the busiest stations in the nation, will be getting a new home. The public is invited to join Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, District 5 City Commissioner Regina I. Hill and Fire Chief Roderick Williams to break ground on the newest fire station in Orlando. The station, which is scheduled to open summer 2016, will be located at 1203 West Robinson Street, just east of N. Orange Blossom Trail. The groundbreaking is set for 11:30 am. During the event, firefighters will offer free blood-pressure checks and hands-only CPR training, as well as light refreshments.
FAVOB Business After Hours – Tues. Sept 8 - Network with other veteran business owners from the Central Florida area at Florida Association of Veteran-Owned Businesses (FAVOB). Orange County Hispanic Heritage Month exhibit – Wed. Sep 9 - Kick off of Hispanic Heritage Month at the History Center. Part of the exhibit will be a commemoration of the US Army 65th Infantry – “The Borinqueneers”. In 1899, the Army 65th Infantry Regiment from Puerto Rico was established. It was the largest, longest-standing, & only active-duty segregated Latino military unit in US history until 1959. The Borinqueneers played a prominent role in World War I, World War II, and particularly the Korean War. They performed many remarkable military accomplishments despite the additional burdens of segregation and prejudice. The group will receive the Congressional Gold Medal recognition – like the Tuskegee Airmen, Navajo Code Talkers, Women Air Service Pilots, and others. A ceremony is being planned for later in the year in Washington DC. With over 60 Borinqueneers still living in the Central Florida area, an effort is being made to take them to Washington for the unveiling of the medal.

Greeters needed! Honor Flight Welcome Home –Thurs. Sept 10 and Sat. Sept 12 – Orlando Int’l Airport –After a day spent in Washington DC, veterans of WWII and Korea return home thru Orlando Int’l Airport. The hub of the nation-wide organization will take veterans on a single day trip to our nation’s capital where they visit the WWII, Korea, and Vietnam War Memorials, Marine Corps Iwo Jima and the Air Force Monuments, and witness the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery.
· Thurs. Sept 10 – 35 vets - Southwest Airlines #407 from Baltimore-Washington BWI; Arriving MCO at8:35pm and enter the terminal area at about 9 – 9:30pm. All these vets started their duties in WW2. Some remained in the military to serve in Korea, and four are Three-peat veterans: WW2, Korea and Vietnam. This Mission will mark the 500th veteran from this one Hub to make the trip. In this group, one vet went into the service when he was 15 years old using his brothers identity until correctly identified and he remained in service. Another former warrior has 7 Battle Stars, and there are B-24 pilots and B-29 crew. 2 members of Allied Forces are present – one Canadian sailor and a Dutch Resistance fighter – who also helped to liberate millions.
· Sat. Sept 12 – Southwest Airlines #915 from Baltimore-Washington (BWI); Arriving MCO at about 10pm and enter the terminal area at about 10:30 – 11pm. The Honor Flight of Central Florida does not readily nor willingly share their information but it is learned that 50 vets will make this Mission. A large group of their awaiting cheering families is expected in the Terminal.
Come welcome all these former warriors home! “Welcome Home” receptions at the airports make a difference! Bring your flags, banners and signs! Terminal A, Airside 2 (hotel area in front of Starbucks.) Before leaving home, check online to see if the flight is on time because there may be delays due to weather, mechanical or medical issues.

For the Early Birds - you can wave these veterans off in the morning no later than 5am – same location as listed above. They process thru Security early and quickly. Honor Our Service Members Awareness – Fri. and Sat. Sept 11 & 12 – Volunteers are needed to place 15,000 flags around the grassy areas of the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. About 85,000 military personnel deployed out of Central Florida since September 11, 2001. About 17,000 return with various wounds, including invisible wounds of war. Placing about 17,000 flags will represent the approx. 20% who may need assistance when returning home. Help raise this awareness in our community. Gather on Friday, 5am to 9am to place the flags. And gather on Sat. 9am to 12 noon to pick up the flags. Light snacks and beverages will be provided, along with a Camaraderie Foundation t-shirt. Windermere 9/11 Memorial - Fri. Sept 11 – Mayor Gary Bruhn, scouts and choirs participate in this commemoration service starting at 7pm at the Memorial behind Town Hall where an actual 680 pound steel beam from the World Trade Center resides. 520 Main Street, Windermere, 34786. This striking monument was the 2009 Eagle Scout project of Jeff Cox, took more than 2,000 hours to complete, and was later named the National Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year. The beam includes more than a dozen protruding bolts, many of which are bent at different angles. Tiles at the base memorialize the victims, especially the 403 First Responders, who died. 11th Annual Jason Burnett Memorial USO Benefit Ride – Sat. Marine LCP Jason Burnett, of St. Cloud in Osceola County, died in service while in Iraq, 2006. He served in the 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force out of Camp Lejeune, NC; son of Shelley and Ron Burnett, a Major with the Osceola County Sheriff Dept. Tunnel To Towers 5K Run & Walk – Sat. Sept 12 –This 5k (3.1 miles) starts at Cranes Roost in Altamonte Springs. Proceeds go to Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers Foundation that honors and supports our first responders and most catastrophically injured service members. The Siller Family started the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation to honor the memory of their brother, Stephen, a New York City firefighter (FDNY) who lost his life on September 11, 2001 after strapping on his gear and running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers. POW/MIA Remembrance and Commander’s Call of History Education Fun – Sat. Sept 19 - Museum of Military History in Kissimmee has a full day, from 10am to 3pm, with POW/MIA commemoration at 10:30am by the 463rd Civil Air Patrol youth group providing an Honor Guard and with a special guest - Charles Montano, US Army Veteran and former Korean War POW. In addition, the museum will be featuring area military reenactors covering the Civil War, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf War. Members of the 2nd Light Artillery, 4th Armored, 82nd Airborne, 45th Infantry, and others will be on hand. Many have good stories to share. Campsites will be set up for visitors to see how our service members lived in the field during the various time periods. Other attendees include the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club, Machine Gun America, Heroes’ Alliance, the USO, the Vet center, and more to come. Rocking for Awareness in Daytona Beach – Sat. Sept 19 – Not all wounds of war are visible and One Team One Fight for PTSD sponsors this event. Home at Last Project Golf Tournament – Thurs. Oct 8 - Windermere Charities Central Florida (WCCF) Foundation is having a fund raising golf tournament at Marriott Orlando World Center Resort's Hawk's Landing Golf Course. Proceeds will help the Home at Last Project build a house for disabled Marine SSgt Sergeant Brandon Wittwer, wife Kassandra and children Kaydence, Karter and Kylee. Brandon enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2002. During his deployment to Iraq in 2006 as a Scout Sniper Team Leader, his unit was ambushed. Despite severe head, neck, and back pain as a result of an RPG explosion, he continued to assist injured Marines in his unit. Following rehab and time with his family, SSgt. Wittwer redeployed in 2013. During a training exercise while deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, SSgt. Wittwer suffered further spinal injuries. Over time his mobility is expected to be limited to the use of a wheelchair.

Coast Guard Auxiliary meeting – Wed. Sept 16 – The Osceola Flotilla 17-10 meets on the 2nd Wed. of each month at American Legion Post 10, 205 Lakeview Dr., Kissimmee, 34741. Volunteers for Department of Veterans Affairs – Volunteers are needed to help veterans around the medical center. Also volunteers are needed to pick up and return veterans home after appointments. Donations of new clothes, shoes, toiletry items, Lynx bus passes, gift cards, and haircut sponsorships are needed for the Community Living Center and the Domiciliary residents. Both the Lake Baldwin clinic and the Orlando VA Medical Center at Lake Nona need volunteers. Details: 407-629-1599 x6940.
Florida Governor’s Veterans’ Service Award - The Governor’s office and the State of Florida have a special medal that is individually presented to veterans. It thanks them for their service. There is currently not a scheduled calendar event soon in Central Florida again, but there could be. Events are more likely to get scheduled in an area when there are several hundred of the requests for the medals. Go to the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs and submit your request on their form. Note: Veterans need not have served in a combat zone to be eligible. If you already received a medal, go to the website to see the pictures of the event. Perhaps you are photographed receiving the medal! New National Cemetery for veterans - the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery in Scottsmoor of Brevard County, will open within the next year. It will serve more than 163,000 veterans, spouses and their eligible dependents living in the central eastern Florida area. If there are (or will be) cremains that you need to place, the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery may be closer to you than the Florida National Cemetery at Bushnell …something for you to consider…..
Unique PTS Therapy – Warriors, past and present with service in Iraq and Afghanistan, experiencing life altering Post Traumatic Stress may wish to inquire about a local clinical research program. The UCF (Univ. of Central FL) RESTORES is still investigational but three years of results reported by warriors are very encouraging. Two separate therapy programs are available at NO COST use sights, sounds and smells to reduce fear and anxiety. One program lasts 17 weeks, and the other is an intense, shorter termed one. Both instruct you to deal with and manage your anger, depression, and re-adjustment after deployment. Mentors needed - Orange County Veterans Court IS succeeding! And so are the Osceola and Seminole County Veteran Courts. Longer term success is possible with community mentors. Be a “battle buddy” or “foxhole buddy” by assisting someone with life challenges. No proselytizing – just non-judgmental caring. Most of the offenders are DUI or possession. If you have experienced substance abuse – although not required - and came thru it, you may be very helpful to someone else. If you are interested in participating as a mentor, know someone who is interested, or are a part of an organization where Mentors can be recruited, contact Beatrice Brown, the Coordinator. Lone Sailor Monument - The Central Florida Council of the U.S. Navy League is leading a campaign to build a Lone Sailor Navy Memorial to recognize and preserve the rich Navy history in Central Florida. (You may recall seeing the statue of a sailor in his pea coat and “dixie cup” cap, hunkering from the weather on a pier with his sea bag nearby.) Originally built on the grounds of an Army Air Corps base from WWII, Orlando’s Naval Training Center (NTC) was commissioned in 1968 to provide training and education to naval recruits. Over 650,000 sailors received their “boot camp” and additional training here. One such specialized program was nuclear power training for officers and recruits. At one time the NTC Orlando was also the only location for providing recruit training for female enlisted personnel. The facility brought over $500M annually into local economy before it was closed. Basic Training graduates were frequently seen in white “Cracker Jacks” with their families at local attractions. Also, from 1968 until 1998, NTC Orlando was also the ONLY location for providing recruit training for female enlisted personnel. Currently, there is no commemoration of the life’s that were changed here. Pavers are available to commemorate your service or that of a friend or loved one.
