INGLIS, FL (WFLA) – He gave his life trying to protect others, and today dozens gathered to remember Walter “buzz” Terhune. Last Thursday, Terhune was at a bank in Inglis in Levy County, when he heard gunfire ring out. He also heard the voices of children playing at a nearby playground.

The Vietnam Veteran immediately ran towards the gunman hoping to protect the children. Instead, he was shot and killed. Authorities tell us Walter Tyson shot Terhune, another man and his wife before turning the gun on himself.

At a military style memorial, Pastor Jeffrey Welch told the crowd Buzz did what he had to do. “Buzz, like the samaritan, could not just put a band aid on the problem. And go on his way,” said Welch.
“But perhaps tried to provide for the safety of those who fled in fear of the gunshots.”
