June 24, 2013

More than 400 US soldiers are preparing for their deployment to Egypt in anticipation of violent protests, riots, and the possibility of having to protect the country’s border with Israel.

Training at Fort Hood for a nine-month deployment in the “near future” concluded on June 20, KCEN-TV reports, noting that the soldiers encountered Molotov cocktails and “other dangerous items” in their training.

“Just what I’ve seen over the course of the past week, this unit is already far more ready for this type of threat than we were last week,” Lt. Matthew Wilkinson told the television station. According to KDH News, the training lasted about six months.

A man who identified himself as Sam Bacile says he is responsible for the movie
A CNN search of public records turns up no information about the man
Bacile is a pseudonym, says an anti-Muslim activist who worked on the film
The cast and crew of the movie say their original lines are dubbed

(CNN) -- The murky account of a man who says he is responsible for a film that ridiculed the Prophet Mohammed is raising questions about everything -- from his identity to the production.

In telephone calls with news agencies, a man identifying himself as Sam Bacile said he was the man who made the movie that roiled the Islamic world.

In Egypt and Libya, mobs targeted U.S. missions and blamed America for the film. In the end, U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three other Americans in the Libyan city of Benghazi were dead, though it is not clear whether the attack was solely incited by the film.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Bacile identified himself as a 52-year-old Israeli-American real estate developer from California.

But the 80 cast and crew members involved in the making of the movie said they were "grossly misled" about its intent. "The entire cast and crew are extremely upset and feel taken advantage of by the producer," they said in a statement to CNN. They said they were "shocked by the drastic rewrites of the script and lies that were told to all involved. We are deeply saddened by the tragedies that have occurred."

Rockslide hits Egyptian village on outskirts of Cairo, at least 18 people killed

At least eight boulders, estimated to weigh at least 70 tons, bury 50 homes

NEW: Official: Locals say up to 500 people may be buried under rubble

In 1994, some 30 people were killed in another rockslide in the same area

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) -- Massive boulders peeled away from a cliff and buried dozens of homes in an Egyptian shanty town Saturday, killing at least 18 people, authorities said. Rescuers were digging by hand to reach any survivors

At least eight boulders, some the size of a small house, fell from the towering Muqattam cliffs outside Cairo and buried about 50 homes in the village of Manshiyet Nasr, one of many densely populated slums ringing Africa's most populous city.

The official said 35 people were injured and, according to residents, there could be up to 500 people buried under the hundreds of tons of rock that fell. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

"My whole family is underneath the rock," sobbed Anwar Ragab by phone to the Associated Press as he watched a body being pulled from under the rock. "I don't know what to do, I can't do anything -- I just want my children back."
