Oviedo man also accused of sex attacks on missionary kids in Africa

Child-porn arrest: Oviedo man also accused of sex attacks on missionary kids in Africa

An Oviedo man with past ties to church missions in Africa was arrested by the FBI on child-pornography charges Friday.

The arrest of Samuel Shamba Warlick comes three months after the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) published a report unrelated to the FBI case accusing Warlick of sexually abusing children at a housing facility for missionary families in the Congo in the late 1980s.

Warlick, 39, made an appearance Friday afternoon in Orlando federal court and was ordered to be jailed until a hearing next week. He faces charges of possessing and distributing child pornography, and could be sentenced up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

According to court documents, law-enforcement officers began investigating Warlick in an undercover capacity online in December.

When agents searched his home Friday, Warlick told them he has possessed child pornography for the past 10 years and that he prefers boys who are between 13 and 16 years old.

Fallen hero receives Medal of Honor from Ovideo FL

Last Memorial Day I heard the story of Staff Sgt. Miller and saw his parents sitting in the front row of the honored guest. Pride and a grief blended together with dignity. I will never forget how they were that day. Many other places want to claim Staff Sgt. Miller as their own but Oviedo was his home after high school and his parents still live there. I just wish that as states want to claim the right to say one of their own "won" the Medal of Honor as if it is some kind of sport, they would also fight over the right to take care of all the wounded and the homeless with as much passion and turn having the highest success rate as their goal so they can honor all the heroes who served from their state. That would really be honoring them!

WASHINGTON -- Calling his sacrifice the "true meaning of heroism," President Barack Obama on Wednesday presented the Medal of Honor to the Oviedo family of Army Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller, who died in January 2008 protecting a patrol of American and Afghan soldiers.

"It has been said that courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point," said Obama, addressing a solemn crowd in the East Room of the White House. "For Rob Miller, the testing point came nearly three years ago, deep in a snowy Afghan valley. The courage he displayed that day reflects every virtue that defined his life."

Their son is buried in Central Florida; his family moved to Oviedo soon after Robert Miller graduated from high school in Illinois, where he grew up.

Miller, who died at 24 on his second tour in Afghanistan, is only the third service member from that conflict to receive the Medal of Honor. The Green Beret earned the distinction when his team of eight U.S. Special Forces and about 15 Afghan troops, with Miller on point, was caught in a ferocious ambush by insurgents in northwest Afghanistan.

WASHINGTON — The White House said Thursday that President Obama will present a posthumous Medal of Honor to an Army sergeant from Pennsylvania.

Obama will present the medal to the parents of Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller on Oct. 6 at the White House, according to administration officials.

According to the White House, the Harrisburg, Pa., native, a resident of Oviedo, Fla., at the time of his death, performed heroically in Afghanistan on Jan. 25, 2008, by showing courage and valor when he sacrificed his own life to help the others.

Miller, 24, was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), out of Fort Bragg, N.C.

Four members of an Orlando family on a beach vacation were killed early Sunday morning when a drunken driver ran a red light and slammed into their car in St. Petersburg, police said.

Elroy "Roy" McConnell, 51, an accountant and triathlete, was at the wheel of a Ford Fusion about 12:45 a.m. when a speeding southbound Chevrolet Impala ran the light on Dr. Martin Luther King Street North at 22nd Avenue North, St. Petersburg police said.

McConnell, 51, and his sons, Elroy "Roy" McConnell III, 28, of Pineville, La.; Nathan McConnell, 24, of Orlando; and Kelly McConnell, 19, of Orlando were pronounced dead at the scene. The collision propelled their car into a large support beam for a sign.

The driver of the Impala, Demetrius D. Jordan, 20, was arrested on four counts of DUI manslaughter, along with DUI causing serious bodily injury and possession of alcohol by a minor. Jordan and a passenger in his car, Mario D. Robinson, 20, were taken to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg with serious injuries.

Oviedo woman victim of home invasion

Seminole woman victim of home invasion
A Seminole County woman was bound and gagged Tuesday by burglars who may have thought they were breaking into an unoccupied house, deputy sheriffs said. The woman, in her early 40s, was home alone in the 3800 block of Carnaby Drive, south of Oviedo, when the burglars rang the doorbell, pounded on the door and then forced their way in, sheriff's Capt. Dennis Lemma said. There were no cars in the driveway, probably giving the impression no one was home, Lemma said. One of the men pulled a handgun and pointed it at the woman's head, forcing her into a bedroom where her ankles and hands were tied. She was gagged and a pillowcase placed over her head. They threatened to kill her if she didn't remain on the bed, Lemma said. At first the woman heard noise, but after she called out and got no response, she untied her hands and went to a neighbor's house. That neighbor called 911.
