Former SWAT team leader lifts veil on PTSD

When you think about Navy SEALS, Green Berets and SWAT police officers, you may be linking them to the Hollywood stars pretending to be them. Tougher than tough, trained killers unable to feel regret but that is not the truth. They are still as human as anyone else.

Here's a story you won't read about often. An ex-SWAT team leader talks about PTSD and the price he paid for what he had to do.

In tailspin after police shootings, former SWAT team leader lifts veil on post-traumatic stress syndrome

Curtis Rush
Police Reporter

It was 12 years ago when Jim Bremner killed a man.

Looking at him now, balding at age 52, with sorrowful blue eyes and an apple-pie humbleness, it’s hard to imagine him as a trained killer.

Now he’s a spiritual man who talks about lifting the veil of secrecy over an alpha-swagger police culture that treats post-traumatic stress disorder as a weakness.

But 12 years ago, he was a different man. He was the team leader of Special Weapons Team One on the elite Emergency Task Force.

He was the best of the best. An assassin if he needed to be.

However, nobody trained him how to deal with the crippling emotions, nightmares and flashbacks that followed.

How terribly ironic that it was in a major metropolitan hospital, where countless lives are saved, that he took a life with an assault rifle on New Year’s Eve in 1999.

US Marine who committed suicide served in Iraq

US Marine who committed suicide served in Iraq

By CHARMAINE NORONHA – 2 days ago

TORONTO (AP) — A U.S. Marine who fatally shot himself after sneaking into Canada had served two terms in Iraq, officials said Saturday.

Timothy Scott, 22, had been wanted by the military for abandoning his unit. He turned a pistol on himself Thursday outside his mother's home in Nova Scotia after police tried to talk him out of firing the gun.

A statement released by Camp Lejeune in North Carolina said Scott had been deployed to Iraq for eight months in 2007 and for seven months in 2008.

The Marine rifleman, who was assigned to headquarters and the support battalion at Camp Lejeune, had joined the Marine Corps in 2005, the statement said.

Reservists claimed right to kill 'bums,' court hears

TORONTO - The key prosecution witness in the trial of three Canadian Forces reservists accused of fatally beating a homeless man testified Wednesday that two of the defendants were enraged and claimed to have the right to kill "bums" and "drug addicts" while their colleague appeared to be a reluctant participant.

"I was told we were all useless pieces of skin," said Valerie Valen, who tried to intervene and stop the brutal attack against Paul Croutch, a 59-year-old homeless man who was killed on August 31, 2005 while trying to sleep on a park bench in downtown Toronto.

Jeffrey Hall, 24; Mountaz Ibrahim, 25 and Brian Deganis, 23, are all charged with second-degree murder and assault causing bodily harm for allegedly beating Valen.

The defendants, who were members of the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada which has its headquarters in an armoury in the park where Croutch was beaten, have pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Valen was returning to visit a friend at a nearby residential shelter when she saw the attack

New York abandons Vietnam Veteran who served this nation

We have a military veteran friend who was honorably discharged during the Vietnam era. He served in the US Navy while having dual citizenship (Canadian/US). He was born in Canada and his family moved to New York when he was a child and became dual Canadian and US Citizens. After discharge my friend worked in the US for over 3 decades, paying US taxes and Social Security. When it came time to retire and apply for his pension he was informed that the US Department of Homeland Security had revoked his US citizenship and did not recognize his Canadian citizenship. The Social Security Administration will not begin his pension payments until his citizenship issue is resolved. He has been trying to work this matter through the VA, his local representatives in government (congressional level) and directly through the Social Security Office. No one seems to know what to do, who should take action and who has responsibility. The DHS will not reply to his inquiries. Any ideas?

You would think that with all the talk about how important our veterans are they would never allow something like this to happen, but it happens too often.

This veteran served this nation, paid taxes and is not able to collect Social Security. The excuse in this case is Homeland Security. Why? Why would Homeland Security get involved in paying what this veteran earned?

I hope the veteran contacts this site so that we can get to the bottom of what happened or that RoseCovered Glasses will contact me with a name. Until then, maybe it would be a good idea for RoseCovered Glasses to contact the following. There isn't much that can be done without a name or a story to go with it.
