Marine dies after shooting himself at barracks; police say it appears accidental

A week ago, Lance Cpl. Cody S. Schoenfelder invited his parents to see him at his new job in Washington. The 19-year-old Marine took his South Dakotan parents to the U.S. Capitol and showed them the Marine Barracks complex on Capitol Hill, where he stood sentry.

On Friday evening, authorities say, Schoenfelder shot himself in the head at the barracks buildings in Southeast Washington, where the Marine commandant lives. He died Saturday in what D.C. police say is being investigated as an accident.

Two D.C. police officials said Schoenfelder was shot inside a guard shack and there was a second Marine with him at the time. Investigators are exploring the possibility that a gun accidentally discharged as the Marines were playing the game “Trust,” in which one points a weapon at the other, according to those two officials and a third person in law enforcement, all of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

Marine to be jailed after accidentally shooting brother

Marine to be jailed for brother's death

SALT LAKE CITY — A grieving former Marine who accidentally shot and killed his younger brother over a campfire was sentenced Tuesday to 90 days in jail followed by a public-speaking tour.

Eric Charlton, 27, was ordered to talk about the dangers of mixing alcohol and firearms twice a week for 45 weeks, said a court clerk for the 4th District judge in Nephi, about 75 miles south of Salt Lake City.

Judge James Brady spared the veteran of tours in Iraq and Afghanistan a longer jail term after Charlton's family, friends and counselors pleaded for mercy.

His wife of six years, Julianne, said jail would keep him from a 3-year-old daughter, a son born in October and "cause Eric to become locked inside his head."

Charlton was described as inconsolable by more than a dozen people who wrote letters describing a special bond between brothers. They asked the judge to reject prosecutors' requests for a stiffer sentence. The judge previously dismissed a felony manslaughter charge. Charlton was sentenced Tuesday for negligent homicide and handling a weapon while intoxicated, both misdemeanors.

Although the incident is still under investigation, Saturday's shooting at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma in which a Marine was wounded is believed, based on initial findings, to have been inadvertent.

“We are leaning toward an accidental discharge at this time,” said Capt. Staci L. Reidinger, the director of public affairs at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma.

The Marine wounded in the shooting has been identified as 22-year-old Lance Cpl. Daryl Adams, an avionics technician attached to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 13, Marine Air Group 13, Third Marine Air Wing.

Adams recently returned from a deployment with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit and has served in the Marine Corps for over two and a half years, joining in December 2008.

He is currently listed in fair condition at Yuma Regional Medical Center, according to base officials.

Arthur Tyler was only five days away from his first game with the varsity football team at Chicago Vocational Career Academy. Friends and family said he couldn't wait to officially don the school's purple and yellow jersey.

But early Sunday morning, as Tyler was spending the night with his best friend in the South Side neighborhood of Englewood, a dangerous game with a shotgun ended with the 16-year-old Tyler accidentally shot and killed, police said. Tyler's friend was charged as a juvenile with involuntary manslaughter Sunday night, police said.

At Tyler's grandmother's house near the site of the shooting, his family struggled Monday with grief and an endless supply of unanswered questions about the circumstances of the teenager's early death.

"I know Arthur wouldn't play with no guns like that," said Tyler's grandmother, Carol Tyler. "He wasn't ready to leave here . . . he wasn't a troubled child."

A young Marine, thinking his gun was not loaded, allegedly shot his friend, also a Marine, early Saturday.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting, which occurred at party at a Polk Village residence.

Around 1 a.m. Saturday sheriff's deputies were called to 2809 Second St. for a report of a gunshot victim. According to party-goers, just prior to the shooting, Marine Lance Cpl. Patrick King, 21, had been playing with a handgun that he'd brought with him to the party.

King allegedly did not know the gun was loaded and pointed the gun at a friend and pulled the trigger. Witnesses reported that there had been no argument between King and his friend, also a 21-year old Marine, and that the shooting was not intentional.

The injured man was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, then transported to Medical University of South Carolina.

King was arrested and charged with assault and battery with intent to kill. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with further information is asked to contact Investigator Cpl. J. Kelleher at 843-470-3217.
