A Louisiana state trooper died Monday from injuries he suffered when he was shot in the head Sunday afternoon by a man whose pickup truck had run into a ditch, and who got out of the truck with a sawed-off shotgun.

"As an organization, we are heartbroken over this senseless and tragic death," the police department wrote in a Facebook post.

Police video showed 43-year-old Senior Trooper Steven Vincent, a 13-year state police veteran in southwest Louisiana and member of a law enforcement family, trying to talk a man out of the vehicle stuck sideways in a ditch, Col. Mike Edmonson said Sunday night.
He said two or three drivers stopped immediately, one of them making a quick turnaround on the two-lane highway.

That driver wrestled the shotgun away from Daigle, and, with the others, got him to the ground, and snapped Vincent's handcuffs on his wrists, Edmonson said. As far as he knew, he said, the good Samaritans were unhurt.

The suspect in the shooting hopped out of the stopped car on Friday evening and opened fire on officers, striking Officer John Moynihan just below his right eye and an apparent bystander in her arm, police Commissioner William Evans said

BOSTON (AP) — A police officer who was honored for his role in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing was in an induced coma fighting for his life early Saturday after being shot in the face during a traffic stop, authorities said.

The suspect in the shooting hopped out of the stopped car on Friday evening and opened fire on officers, striking Officer John Moynihan just below his right eye and an apparent bystander in her arm, police Commissioner William Evans said.

Other officers returned fire and killed the suspect at the scene, Evans said. The woman suffered a flesh wound and was in good spirits, and three other officers were taken to a hospital with stress-related problems, he said.

The names of the suspect and wounded woman weren't immediately released.

Moynihan, 34, is on the police Youth Violence Task Force and is a highly decorated military veteran, Evans said.

He is a former Army Ranger who served in Iraq and was honored at the White House in May with the National Association of Police Organizations TOP COPS award.

Moynihan received the award for being one of the first responders in Watertown following the April 2013 gunbattle with the Boston Marathon bombers.

Moynihan had helped transit police Officer Richard Donohue, who was shot in the leg and nearly bled to death when police tried to apprehend Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Lieutenant Michael McCarthy said. read more here

DENVER- A crowd gathered at Civic Center Park on Saturday to show their support for law enforcement after months of criticism and attacks on police.

The rally is one of many being held across the country. Many were started through social media using the twitter hashtag #BlueLivesMatter.

"They are mostly good people who actually care about their communities and it is hard to see other people tear them down on a daily basis," said Kim Snetzinger who showed up to participate in the rally.

Those in law enforcement will tell you the job has always been dangerous, but it hasn't always been so thankless. This year's events involving the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner brought on an outpouring of anger towards police for what many see as excessive force.

"You can always find somebody to say something negative about you. But we say thank you. Thank you for running towards the gun shots. Thank you for securing our neighborhoods," said Pastor Larry Stevenson, exciting the crowd.

Crisis Intervention training expands after police officer and Fort Hood solider shot and killed

Bell County: Increase In Standoffs Catalyst For Proposed Crisis Team
Our Town Texas
By: Rachel Cox

BELL COUNTY (July 22, 2013)—An increase in police standoffs in Bell County is the catalyst for an effort to create a crisis intervention team that would deal with suspects with possible mental issues.

"We are looking at a possible grant working with MHMR to create a crisis intervention team here in the county which would entail a sergeant and four or five trained deputies that deal with mental cases," Bell County Sheriff Eddy Lange said Monday.

At least five standoffs this year have happened in Killeen, and on July 14, one ended with the shooting death of police Officer Robert "Bobby" Hornsby, 32.

Fort Hood Pfc. Dustin Billy Cole was shot and killed after he opened fire with an AK47 on Hornsby and Officer Juan E. Obregon, Jr., who was wounded.

The two SWAT team members had responded to a standoff involving Cole at a Killeen apartment complex.

"You have to learn how to control your fear but enhance your caution and this brings it all back to reality that we're all out there trying to do the best job we can and bad things can happen to officers, this is just one of those tragic situations and I knew the family personally and again my prayers just go out to the family; it's tough, it's tough for the whole community," Lange said.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office will hold a ceremony Wednesday to name an Avalon Park street after fallen deputy sheriff Brandon Coates, who was killed by a felon during a Dec. 2010 traffic stop.

Coates' widow, Virginia, and mother, Deborah, are expected to attend the 10 a.m. event along with Sheriff Jerry Demings, Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and several others.

The dedication will name a street near the 3700 block of East Avalon Park Boulevard.

Coates, 27, was a member of the Sheriff's Tactical Ant-Crime Unit and regularly patrolled high-crime neighborhoods like the one near South Orange Blossom Trail where he pulled over Brandon Lyals.

Lyals shot and killed Coates, a U.S. Marine and Iraq war veteran, following a struggle. The 29-year-old convict later killed himself.

Volunteer firefighters were brothers who did everything together, family says
Some West students whose schools were damaged are taking classes in Waco

West, Texas (CNN) -- Since they were little boys growing up West, Texas, brothers Doug and Robert Snokhous did everything together. They fixed cars, went hunting, golfed and barbecued together. It just made sense that they would both become volunteer firefighters, and that they were side by side last Wednesday when they rushed to a fire at the West Fertilizer Co.

The brothers were among 14 people who died after the fire led to a massive explosion at the distributor. The blast decimated not only the company's building but ravaged practically the entire north side of the small farming community.

The nine first-responders from West who died battling the blaze represented nearly one-third of the town's volunteer firefighting and EMT force. The fire destroyed three fire trucks and an ambulance. Firefighters and trucks from neighboring communities now fill the void at the West firehouse.

Among the others who rushed to the fire and lost their lives: Kenneth "Luckey" Harris Jr., a 52-year-old Dallas firefighter who lives in West, and two friends of first responders whose identities have not been confirmed by authorities.

Volunteers step up to help disabled East Bay veteran

ABC News Team
January 24, 3013

PITTSBURG, Calif. (KGO) -- An East Bay veteran is getting a complete makeover of his backyard, thanks to a team of volunteers from Home Depot.

The volunteers worked from about 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday. The veteran who owns the home served two years in Iraq in a combat zone before he returned to the Bay Area and joined the CHP. He was left permanently disabled after responding to a robbery call in Oakland. The team of volunteers came out to his house to help make his life a little smoother, going forward.

After all the service Shawn Navel has given to his country and his community, he's grateful for what's being given back to him now, "I'm extremely happy and I'm also happy to see all these supporters," Shawn said.

An Army veteran, Shawn served two tours in Iraq before returning to the Bay Area as a California Highway Patrol officer. It wasn't just a career, but something he considered a calling.
But that was all shattered three years ago when Shawn and several other CHP officers responded to a robbery in progress at an Oakland Walgreens. When the robber came out shooting, Shawn was hit eight times.

Baldwin County Deputy Scott Ward, left, died on Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, during a violent confrontation with Michael J. Jansen, right, according to law enforcement officials
MARLOW, Alabama – Deputy Scott Ward and two other law enforcement officials had no warning before a man with a history of mental health problems started firing shots from a 9mm handgun, Baldwin County Sheriff Huey “Hoss” Mack said today.

The Friday evening shooting in this community east of Fairhope resulted in the deaths of both Ward and Michael J. Jansen, and left a second deputy critically wounded.

“A number of gunshots were fired by Mr. Jansen and the deputies. Both deputies were shot numerous times. I don’t have the number of gunshots,” Mack said. “We’re still working the scene even today.”

Mack said autopsies had been performed on both Ward and Jansen, but he added that he has not seen the report.

Ward, 47, was a 15-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office and previously served as a Prichard police officer. He also was a Coast Guard Reserve officer who had served in Afghanistan.

Citing an ongoing internal affairs investigation, Mack would not release the names of the other deputies involved. He said the wounded deputy is a sergeant who was the shift supervisor. The sheriff said that the third deputy, who was not hurt, has been with the Sheriff’s Office for about a year.

Those who lost their lives responding to the World Trade Center on 9/11 and in the resulting wars will be remembered Tuesday with an event in Wickham Park — a centralized effort by several groups in Brevard County.

He is a past president of the 10-13 Club of Brevard County, an organization of law enforcement officers that is sponsoring the event.

The memorial will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a flag ceremony, including color guards from Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, 10-13 Club, Sea Cadets and Brevard retirees of the Fire Department of the City of New York. Brevard Police and Fire Pipes and Drums also will perform.
