Song of comfort in Times Like These

Times Like These

Lyrics

I, I'm a one way motorway
I'm the one that drives away
Then follows you back home
I, I'm a street light shining
I'm a wild light blinding bright
Burning off alone

It's times like these you learn to live again
It's times like these you give and give again
It's times like these you learn to love again
It's times like these time and time again

I, I'm a new day rising
I'm a brand new sky
To hang the stars upon tonight
I am a little divided
Do I stay or run away
And leave it all behind?

It's times like these you learn to live again
It's times like these you give and give again
It's times like these you learn to love again
It's times like these time and time again

PTSD:Despite budget problems, stress must be treated

Despite budget problems, stress must be treated
Lynn Moriarty • Special to The Desert Sun • September 20, 2008

Victims of child abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault, violent crime, survivors of earthquakes, hurricanes, flood, fire and combat veterans all share a common need to heal from a condition know as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) a debilitating psychological condition that often follows a terrifying physical or emotional event. PTSD often causes the re-experiencing of the trauma as though it were just happening.

After the parades have ended, the criminals prosecuted and the damages from the natural catastrophes rebuilt, the ongoing need for mental health services will remain. Without professional help many suffering from PTSD will develop symptoms and behaviors that put them at high risk for damaging themselves or others.

Each year at our emergency shelter for victims of intimate partner violence, we see hundreds of women and children with stress induced impaired functioning and we see infants that become rigid with fear when anyone comes near. These are awful sights to behold even when we know that at least for our clients help is at hand.

Do survivors of traumatic events share certain traits?

'I closed my eyes ... and waited to die'
Deborah Scaling Kiley remembers the screams, the sight of water turning red as sharks devoured a man who had been with her as their yacht sank. But she lived. And so did Ma Yuanjiang who drank urine and ate paper as he lay buried in earthquake rubble for a week. These and other survivors share certain traits, a researcher says. full story

BREMERTON — When Jonothan Pritchett went looking for relief from a back injury, he found out his pain was more than muscle deep. His is the kind of pain that goes all the way to the heart.

The Alaska native found his way to the Central Kitsap area seeking medical advice and treatment. To his surprise, the attending physician wrote one word on the back of a sheet of paper: “depression.” From there, Pritchett was referred to Kitsap Mental Health Services, where he sought solace in the power of group therapy.

Through KMHS’s trauma recovery program, Pritchett was set up in a small group of three, in which he worked through the internal strife he wasn’t even aware existed.

“I didn’t know I was depressed,” he said.

Through the course of the weekly sessions, Pritchett realized he’d been suppressing the anger and pain of an abusive childhood.

“It’s just the fact that you aren’t alone, that some of the people here have the same battles as you,” he said, describing the comfort of group therapy.
