Troops in Afghanistan not getting 3 meals a day

UPDATE
Time to start reporting on who is lying to readers. First, this is not true. Second, Congress is responsible for the money spent and has not passed a budget in years. So what we have here is yet one more person deciding that truth just doesn't matter. Wonder if he works for FOX?
Obama Eliminates Breakfast for US Troops in Afghanistan, Stuffs Own Face
January 31, 2013
By Daniel Greenfield

If only American soldiers in Afghanistan were unemployed Democratic voters in Chicago, then they might be getting three square meals a day from the government.

But the military is the one place that Obama feels comfortable slashing expenses. While spending at an uncontrollable rate unseen since the last days of the Roman Empire in every other area, Obama has been cutting “waste” in the military like 20,000 Marines, Tricare healthcare for veterans and breakfast for soldiers serving in areas where he would only venture accompanied by heavy firepower.

Pentagon battles rumors over deployed soldiers’ meals
By JOSH SMITH

The drawdown in Afghanistan has soldiers in at least one province adjusting to new breakfast policies, and it’s forced the Pentagon to work to set the record straight regarding suggestions that budget cuts have left troops deployed overseas without their morning meal.

A chain email has been circulating online, claiming that “elected officials believe that our military who are deployed overseas don’t have a need for breakfast anymore.”

The rumor-busting website Snopes.com picked up the chain email, as well as statements from soldiers stationed in Afghanistan and their relatives. The site noted the email was “partly true.”

Hot breakfasts have been discontinued in some areas of Afghanistan to streamline logistics, according to the Defense Department, but officials were quick to note that MREs and often other cold food items like cereal and fruit are still provided.

Justice Department fights for fire National Guardsman

Justice Dept. goes to bat in vet’s USERRA suit

The Justice Department has filed suit against the sheriff in Jerome County, Idaho, charging violations of the reemployment rights of an Army National Guard soldier who re-injured his knee on a weekend training drill.

Mervin Jones first injured the knee in Iraq in 2004, according to the lawsuit, filed in federal court in Boise, Idaho. The complaint alleges that the sheriff’s office fired Jones on April 10, 2009, two weeks after a second knee surgery required after he re-injured his knee during a weekend training drill in 2008.

Under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, employers must accommodate service members injured in the line of duty. Troops recuperating from injuries are allowed up to two years to be reemployed.

Jones, a medically retired sergeant, initially filed a complaint with the Labor Department, which referred it to Justice after an investigation.

Got PTSD? Try Yoga

Too many years ago to admit, I remember a Marine I told to take up Yoga. He thought I was out of my mind. "What's next? Knitting?" and he hung up the phone. A week later he called me and told me that he decided to try it and after the first class, he was willing to do it again. Since he didn't call me after that to chew me out, I can only assume it worked for him. The goal is to reteach the body to clam down. That's all. There is no magic spell in any of this and no one size fits all. The whole veteran has to be treated and that includes their minds, body and spirit.

If you cannot do Yoga because of physical problems, then try taking a walk with headphones plugged into calming music so that when you start to think about unpleasant things, you can refocus on the music. The goal is to calm down on the walk so heavy metal or rap won't help when you're doing it.

Some find healing in art, writing and martial arts. Meditation and Yoga have also been around for enough centuries that the benefits have been proven to be real.

What do Madonna, Matthew McConaughey, and Jennifer Aniston have in common with our veterans?

Yoga. With this celebrity fitness secret now going mainstream, even our veterans are hitting the yoga mat. Why? To treat their Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It's the latest proof that, sometimes, a harmonious brain-body connection is the best medicine.

With more than one-third of our veterans suffering from PTSD, it's clear that the go-to therapies -- pills and prescriptions -- aren't solving the problem. But interestingly enough, research shows that trauma-sensitive yoga, which uses breathing, stretching and meditation, can help calm the portion of the brain that gets hyper-aroused during a stress episode -- no medication required.

If you've ever practiced yoga or meditation, this probably doesn't surprise you. Yoga has been known to have a cathartic effect, unlocking a person's repressed emotions. And in the case of PTSD, it can help a person shift his or her focus inward, away from the stress and trauma, by triggering the parasympathetic nervous system. Yoga isn't a substitute for warranted medical care, but it is an integrated, evidence-based strategy that will help people cope, heal, grow and thrive. read more here

Nadia McCaffrey's Veterans Village taken by bank

Nadia McCaffrey has adopted more veterans than I can remember. I was contacted by her after a post I did way back in 2005 because of this article I read on One Mother's War. Veterans Village started because her son died in combat. That's the way most things start.

The grief causes a lot of people to seek something to do with their lives that will make up for the loss the world suffered. Yes, the world. Each of us have something we are supposed to do on this planet we live on. Some are supposed to do things on a grand scale, getting money, power and attention to find support for what they are supposed to do while others are supposed to work on a small scale. Nadia is one of that type of hero.

No less important than all the other charities out there screaming "look at me" and "give me your money" while they never say a thing about what they are doing with all your money. You never really see them doing much at all while they talk about the issues veterans face, pull at your heart with their commercials, stuff sold at the Walgreens with their logo on it, they get your money for "raising awareness" and you know exactly what group I'm talking about but not interested in giving them any more free press. But people like Nadia are more about doing the good work and reliving suffering of our veterans than relieving you of what's in your wallet.

The problem is in doing what she has done is few think about her and supporting the work she does because the reality in this country is veterans are usually last on the list of things to do. Oh, sure we can line some streets in our home towns when heroes like her son Patrick come home in a casket with a flag covering it. We can show up when there is a local fundraiser for a triple amputee Green Beret SFC. Josh Burnette but everyday there are more and more no one ever hears about.

They end up homeless in the very country they risked their lives for. In an odd way, their very sense of selflessness that caused them to set aside everything for us, is what keeps them from asking us for help. Most are suffering from PTSD. When the military loves to point out that military suicides are more connected to relationship problem and financial hardships, they never seem to mention the fact that less than half of the veterans needing help for PTSD ask for it, so that in turn means that less than half are diagnosed with it. If they don't seek help to heal, then they are passed off as not suffering due to military service. Reporters never seem to know enough about PTSD to understand that. It still causes relationship problems and financial issues diagnosed or not. Families cannot understand and deal with the actions of these veterans, so they end up homeless and supportless.

Nadia tried to do something about it and now the bank took the home she had established to give these veterans a loving home they not only needed, but earned. What happened to her is just one more example of the people doing the work to help our veterans more than raise funds are suffering.

This notice came in from Facebook.

Nadia's son, Patrick was ambushed and killed in Iraq.

Since then, Nadia has turned Patrick's home in Tracy, CA into a Veteran's safe place...taking in homeless veterans, especially those with PTSD. She has done this completely on her own.

With the downturn of the economy, and the added expenses, Nadia was selling the home to one of our veterans who agreed to carry on the legacy of Patrick's home.

All the paperwork was submitted and the home was set for a "short-sale."

This morning at 10am, Nadia was notified that the home was sold by the bank...no notice, just sold right out from under her and the veteran.

She has more details and can provide you with the back story.

As for a SD tie in, Patrick's widow and children reside in Oceanside...in fact, Patrick is buried just outside of Camp Pendleton.

It pains me to write that since Patrick's death, his home has been a healing space and place for homeless and sick veterans who have come to Patrick's house to be loved and cared for my Nadia. Her void and loss has been caring for us veterans.

Nadia has helped over dozens of men and women in the home she is not about to lose, because the house went into foreclosure, and today, My dearest Nadia called me to tell me that the bank sold the house from "under her in an auction", knowing that they were negotiating a sale with one of the veterans who still resides in "the house that belong to our hero's".

She is currently in touch with a couple of larger TV stations and people who have done articles on her, but she needs someone to eloquently tell the brutal face of what the banks are still doing to our fallen heroes!

You can do something to help Nadia. Sign the petition on Change.org!

Orlando bikers and patriots wanted to honor Green Beret Saturday

UPDATES I am not going to be on the pickup truck but will film them on the road.

Here's some sites that reported on this event for Josh.
Benefit for double amputee soldier to help with home repairs

Orlando Nam Knights
I am going to be on the back of a pickup truck filming the escort to the VFW, so let's make Orlando look good on this! Last year I filmed over 40 events for veterans groups in Central Florida FOR FREE so that someone would be covering how much this area cares about our veterans and how great our veterans are. Well, here's one more of our veterans needing support but above financial support, needs emotional support of the only group in this country knowing what kind of price our veterans paid for what we enjoy.

When Josh was contacted about this event from Mary he was shocked that someone cared this much about him. His friends told Mary that his emotions changed just by knowing someone thought about him. Imagine that! He gave so much, did so much for this country, yet he felt no one really cared.

So how about it Orlando bikers. Want to give some time on Saturday to lift this Green Beret amputee a bit higher? Call and volunteer to give up some of your day on Saturday the same way you show up to do a poker run. Let's show the rest of this country how Orlando doesn't do anything small when it comes to our veterans!

Oh, by the way, I'm filming the event too!

NOW IS THE TIME FOR ALL GOOD VOLUNTEERS TO COME TO THE AID OF THEIR VFW!
